HMM - Do I fish? More to the point, did I fish the basin? No, we didn't fish this trip. We really weren't sure what we were getting into, so we left the fishing gear at home. From the folks we talked to down there it is a great area to fish, but we were a bit early in the year for the best fishing action.

OK - I'm in danger of being accused of talking to myself since I am answering my own post - but since I have now been there I suppose I can get away with it.
The Atchafalaya Basin is a Lousiana swamp that runs 150 miles North to South and 20 Miles East to West. It is located between Lafayette and Baton Rouge, with an 18 mile long bridge for I10 spanning it.
I would recommend it for anyone wanting a Southern paddle during the hard water months up North. It is not the BW or Q, but it is an amazing section of water with abundant wildlife. We did a 5 hour loop around the Lake Pointe Fouse State Park and saw a dozen gators.
Lousiana has a reputation for Mosquitoes, but during spring break they weren't as bad as I'm used to in the summer North Woods.
