Pardon me if this has already been discussed--I picked up this book in Ely last week: Facing North: Portraits of Ely, Minnesota, by Andrew and Ann Goldman, forward by Jim Brandenburg. Elegant black&white portraits and essays about Ely and many of it's citizens including "Sludge" Rolando (the guy who drives the Jeep with the replica machine gun), the Chainsaw sisters, canoe-builders Jeanne Bourquin and Joe Seliga, Jeep LaTourell, Bob Cary, game wardens, pilots, guides, resort and business owners and workers and just folks. Andrew Goldman is a Chicago photographer who shoots for Playboy among other publications, and has been spending time in Ely since childhood. Highly recommended for both the photography and writing.
