Heimo and Edna Korth are featured on Animal Planet's 'The Last Alaskans', a very good show covering the lives of the last seven families allowed to live in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in NE Alaska, above the Arctic Circle. FYI.

Found mine at a used book store. I let him know what I like and he points me to certain areas. He'll even order me old books for an extra buck. It's the kind of place you have to turn sideways to get around and shoo cats away. Feels like I'm mining for hidden treasure. You can get an arm load for the cost of one new book at Barnes&Nobel. Not to mention that I'm recycling.
If you know what you want, abebooks sells used books online for dirt cheap. But they don't give personal recommendations or have cats (that I know of). You need to keep seeding your reading list with random stumbleupons too, and that's a lot easier to do browsing a bricks-and-mortar store.

up up Good read. I liked how it didn't glamorize how hard it was to live off the land. No doubt I couldn't handle it the way he did. Still some of the experiences are inspiring.

I just finished "The Final Frontiersman" and was curious if Heimo and Edna were still living in the bush. A fantastic read by the way. Very well written with a lot of information on what happened with people who tried living in the Alaskan bush in the 1970's. I found this on youtube and it gives a great update on the Korth's. I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Final Frontiersman this week. Heimo Korth's amazing adventures above the Arctic Circle are inspiring for us adventurers in the BWCAW!
