I tried out my new Kelly Kettle in my back yard the other day. I started it with some newspaper and a few twigs from a maple tree. It boiled water in just a few minutes and cleaned up nicely when I was done. The fire is fed through the central chimney by just dropping twigs into it. When the kettle is lifted off it's firebox, you could always dump the embers or burning sticks into the firepit or just put them out by pouring a little surplus water on them. I have the small version and it's about 3/4 the size of a 2 liter pop bottle. It weighs about 1 pound and the fuel is where you find it, so no hauling fuel bottles around. I'd say it may occupy about the same cubic inches of space than an Optimus 8R or Svea 123 and an appropriate fuel bottle, but the weight reduction is fantastic! I'm getting too old to haul tons of stuff on portages, and as long as I have coffee, I'm happy. It's made of aluminum and seems quite strong. Denting it would be a result of carelessness, not cheap construction. Although if it took a good hit right in the side, I'm sure it would dent. It's similiar to a Sigg or similiar aluminum bottle.

Took a look at these things.....neato idea. How do U think they're going to pack in a pack and the durablity? Have you had one in your hands yet....thinking about he denting and disform factor.... and how the fire box loads and unloads.....Keep us posted

This year I'm taking a Kelly Kettle. If you've never seen one, I'd look into them. They are a bit pricey, but should fulfill just about every need and weigh very little.

I looked at the zz website - with the double walls with ports up near the rim, it looks like the zip is probably a secondary-combustion capable stove.
I don't know how much air flow you really need to get the good secondary combustion going - I'm guessing it isn't all that much, because you can do it without a forced draft.

Could be, always really wondered about the soot too-that is one of things got me away from wood. Is the Sierra jobby a sooty endeavor or is it better than the typical quick cooking fire and charcoal maker?

I get the idea behind the wood gas stove, I'm just curious as too whether the Wood-gas stove I referenced is DIFFERENT than the Sierra Zip stove, or are they BOTH using the same principle? They both have the blower, and the Wood Gas stove has an illustration of how it works. The Sierra Stove doesn't, but the explanation "sounds" the same? IF the Wood gas stove could cut down on the pot sooting, that would be a big plus as far as I'm concerned. Maybe the only difference is the NAME :question

The deal with wood-gas stoves is 'secondary combustion'.
As has been noted - in an open fire wood gasifies and the burning flame is in the gas - not on the wood. I guess you'd call that the primary combustion - and it generally isn't all that efficient or hot, and tends to be sooty.
Secondary Combustion / Gasification burners have - a primary fire chamber - an introduction of heated air after the primary chamber
The secondary air at the output of the primary chamber results in a flame that more completely burns the wood gas - hotter and more effienciently.
I've got a fireplace insert that pretty much does that - she burns very hot, and doesn't use much wood. My buddy put in a external wood-fired boiler that really only uses primary combustion - he's thinking about re-working it with baffling to get some secondary combustion to work.
I've played around with some coffee canish stoves trying to get a good burn - but haven't gotten around to adding a fan yet.
There's not too many fire setups less effiencient than a BWCAW official fire grate....
You don't just have to burn wood gas - you can actually run combustion engines with it.
