I just stab mine into my thigh - handier that way, and I don't have to carry a sheath
That's a good one! Must be dicey on your solo elk hunts, all that blood and grizzlies in the bush
Actually with the Kydex sheath, its very safe. I might bruise myself falling on my right side, but unlike a leather sheath, the Kydex won't cut thru. That' why I'm ordering the Kydex sheath and why most combat troops carry their's in Kydex sheaths instead of leather.

"I carry my knife in my right side cargo pocket of my canoe/camp pants. They offer different mounting options, I'm going with a clip that you could attach/detach to webbing, or in my case, carry the knife with sheath IN pocket, clipped to outside."

I recently picked up this knife for camping/paddling. It's a Kershaw American Hunter. Made in USA. Little longer than a neck knife, more suited to belt wear. I got it with the Orange G-10 scales figuring it would be easy to spot if dropped.

Comes with real nice fitted black belt sheath but I found a place that makes custom Kydex sheaths for any knife. I carry my knife in my right side cargo pocket of my canoe/camp pants. Full tang Sandvic steel at 58-60 rc. I got mine from A. G Russell but you might find it elsewhere or cheaper? Under $40.
