Sylvania is a great place to get their feet wet. It would be difficult to get lost. If your looking for a place for a lot of travel, it's not the place to go, if you're looking for a good canoe and camping area, it's the place to be.

Sylvania is a great alternative for me living in NC Wisconsin. 2 hours vs 9 to Atikokan. Beautiful crystal clear water in most lakes. Catchable LT population in Clark Lake. In early June, when we usually go, the bass fishing is incredible. Simple black rubber worm on light jig head is all it takes. Most bass are large, largest SM I caught was 23". Due to catch and release and no live bait, the bass population is amazing for lakes that are typically very infertile with stunted fish. Excellent jumbo bluegills in one particular lake. Only issue is that it is difficult to get a campsite as they fill up fast. Just plan ahead and reserve early. Have never been disappointed.

My regular canoeing partner always has good things to say about Sylvania as we pass it every time on our way to the Quetico. My understanding is the lakes are very clear.
He would go very early in the year to try and hit the lakes when the smallmouth spawn was on. I know I have heard the stories 50 times of the whoppers he has caught off the beds........especially during bad weather. Anyway......if you plan to fish take the clear water into consideration. He also caught some lakers jigging a yellow northland bucktail jig with a bit of mylar in it.
The last thing I remember was the lakes can be susceptible to wind.

I was there as a teen (50 now). Was a great place and time. I recall: Clear beautiful lakes, nice smallmouth (catch and release i think?), old forest, loons, surprisingly not many people at all, although summer, few bugs. It rained 15 hrs solid at one point during which time bro and i consumed 3# of trail mix while sitting in my leaky 10.00 garage sale tent (in spite of this if offered the same trip and conditions i'd go again in a heartbeat)... There must be a more recent trip report out there.

Has anyone out there canoed the Sylvania Wilderness in the Western UP? I have a 5 and a 10 year old daughter, that I'm thinking about taking on an multi-night wilderness trip. Sylvania would cut down on some travel time and I'm thinking it might be better suited for a "first" trip.
I'm just curious if anyone else has been there and I'm curious what your experience was?
