mat pretty much covered it all. this last year we had a yoke break and had to replace it with quite a bit of rope run back and forth with a bit of foam taped around it. the actual contact on my shoulders was more comfortable than a rigid yoke, however the hull flexed considerably and the canoe bounced a ton. the vision was pretty bad as the sag/flex put your head way up in there. on some larger steps the canoe would bounce on your head.

yep, there is considerable bounce and flex in my Rx Rendesvouz when I carry it with that strap yoke - that's a 58lb boat with maybe another 5 or 8 lbs of outfitting and airbags and paddle. (the same boat will flex a bit anyways, even if using the Wen seat mounted yoke, due to the way the metal seat hangers are set up - i.e. the hull flexes, not just the strap.) because the flex lets the boat gain more momentum than a solid yoke, you feel that weight "hit" more with the strap when you step down.

but it is a good way to go for short carries, and is always on the boat (since 2005) - I like having it, and it is mostly what I use at takeouts and for short portages, though don't normally do very many with this boat. have probably carried the boat that way maybe a hundred times - no issues with durability or coming loose. wouldn't want to do very long carry with it though, and your head is up inside the boat pretty high, so visibilty is less than with a solid yoke. it would likely flex much less with an ultralight hull.

I wouldn't recommend it for a BW/Quetico type of trip, but for other purposes, it is fine - as I said, I like it

btw, the strap rolls up to one side and is held in that roll by a velcro strap, so even though it is always on the boat, it is never in the way. takes a couple of seconds to unwind and clip the buckle together, and a bit more than that to roll it back up and secure it out of the way. don't recall it ever coming out of the roll while car-topping, nor when playing submarine.

Ran across this item the other day. Might be a good set-up if you carry pack and canoe at the same time. Strap if installed properly could lay across top of pack shoulder straps. Might be to much "bounce" in a strap, but it's always good to have choices. (You need to *Login* or *Register* to view media files and links)
