great minds think alike?
mines a variation, but basically the same. i have a camouflage baseball hat with LED lights built into the brim with a really neat toggle switch on the bill and an extra on/off switch by the battery (so you dont accidentally turn it on during the day and drain the battery). i sewed 4 buttons onto it, 2 near where the bill attaches, and one on each side of back adjustable strap things.
i then sewed 2 pieces out of camouflage fabric, one is just a rectangle about 4 inches wide that uses the 2 back buttons for a neck cape. the other piece looks like a bikini top that covers both ears and wraps around behind my neck also. the buttons make for an easy on/off and i find the lights in the brim of hat to be irreplaceable. when daylight starts fading, simply turn the switch on the battery to 'on' and then its a one handed squeeze on the bill to illuminate.
i havent found a manufactured hat with both the lights in the bill and neck/ear coverings yet. at least not for the combined $15 i spent on my hat/materials. at least not with lightweight materials, there are some with heavy fleece

I wonder if Permethrin on the cape would help the bug thing too.

I have mentioned this article of gear before but its worth mentioning again. I'm a big fan of this hat for a number of reasons. First off its not made from a thick material. You don't overheat while your wearing it.
And being from Florida I have looked at just about every hat made that has a cape. Most are poorly designed are heavy, hot and dorky looking. The sun runner hat is a distinct exception. It quickly fastens via a couple of snaps to the front brim. The cape is easily removed and presto you have an ordinary ball cap. Now comes the part which may catch your attention........your on a portage trail and the biting flies are aggressive or the skeets keep finding the back of your neck. Pull the super lightweight cape out of your front pocket and bingo 2 snaps and your in business. Hide those ears and you will reduce flies by at least 75%. Don't believe me? Try it sometime. I think those white ears act just like neon signs...."free food, stop in for a bite". Cover those ears and your fly problems will diminish substantially.
One tiny tip......the cape is very lightweight so I put a patch (Quetico wilderness fisherman) in the lower center rear to give it a little bit of weight to help keep it down.
Yes I know its a pricey little piece of gear but performs exceptionally well.
