Title: Flambeau River
Post by Carl_Rogers on Feb 25th, 2003 at 10:40pm
The Flambeau River in northern Wisconsin is another canoeing option. It's a little more crowded and has a few rapids to go through, but campsites are plentiful.

I agree that the Flambeau is fun - it has been 16 years since I was there, but 16 years ago there sure weren't many people on it.

I have always wanted to float the Flambeau. I would like any info I could get. Thanks.

canoeboy,
Here are some WI river route links:

Sadly, their info on the Flambeau is thin at best.  I did the section from below the dam to Park Falls (is that the Flowage?) about 3 decades ago.  It rocked...wide river sections broken by fun whitewater.

You might want to check out the Bois Brule too.  There's one set of rapids that must be portaged but the rest are a blast to run.

TwistTieCollector,
Thank you for the web address on the Flambeau. I have heard the smallmouth fishing is great. canoeboy

Just wanted to bring this back to the front page for one last viewing.

Have any of you paddled the Flambeau River in north central Wisconsin?  We're paddling the north branch of the Flambeau the weekend of June 4-6, 2004 and would like to hear how you liked the river.  Anything specific to rapids and campsites would be appreciated.

Thanks.
Pete

Author Mike Svob has written a guide, "Paddling Northern Wisconsin" which has a 5 page description on the North Branch of the Flambeau.  Sounds like a nice float.  Have a nice trip Jackfish.

Thanks Yellowbird.  I have Mike Svob's book and I think it's excellent.  Just wondering if anyone from the board has had any personal experiences on the river.

And yes, I think it's going to be a fun trip.  Looking forward to it.

Jackfish,

I have a friend that lived in Medford, WI for about 4 years before moving to Nebraska. He had done sections of the Flambeau & loved it. I was planning to do a river trip with him in 2000, but he ended up changing jobs & moving so I missed out :(

I don't think you will be disapointed.

I'm thinking of hitting the Flambeau over Memorial Day weekend.  Anyone have any experience from around that time?  I'm wondering if the campsites are tough to get, and how the fishing is.

Howdy AB.....

We paddled the north fork of the Flambeau last year the weekend after Memorial Day.  I would expect Memorial Day to be a bit busier than the following weekend, however.

There are quite a few campsites along the river but plan to set-up camp no later than mid-afternoon.  That should assure you of a campsite.

Many of the campsites have more than one tent pad so you should be ok.  Just plan accordingly and adjust for the numbers of people on the river.  A beautiful, hot weekend will bring out the canoers.  A cool, rainy weekend (aren't all Memorial Days like that?) will keep the numbers down.

If you need some specifics about the Flambeau, I'll try to help you the best I can.  It's really a great ride.

Thanks Jackfish.

I'm pretty excited about it as a long weekender.  I just found that it looks like Musky season opens the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, which would likely make it busier on top of the holiday.  Maybe I'll see if the crew can hold off a bit, or maybe even go the weekend before...

I used to go down the Flambeau every May on opening weekend of game fishing and always did well. Our primary target was walleyes. Be prepared for cold though. I've been in t shirts and I've been in full ice fishing wear.

Cheers,

thanks vet, the 'eyes are what I like to hear :D   I'd like to catch a nice muskie someday, but I think I'd rather have a nice walleye dinner.

I picked up a neat brochure at CanoeCopia that has a ton of information, including small maps, on the Flambeau River.

You can find the same information at   (You need to Login or Register .

They also list a phone number of (800) 269-4505.

Hope this helps anyone looking for a great whitewater paddle this year.

No commercial interest here.  Just a happy Flambeau paddler.
