This park is the one that the Scouts take their trips into. It is is like what the BWCA must have been like before that area was "discovered." One can choose to enter via the Obukowin lake portages (be prepared for a vigorous workout), or via floatplane (less strenuous, but much more $$$$). I think it really says something about this park when the Staff alumni who have worked at the Scout Base in Bissett take their canoe trips in this park, and not the BWCA. it has several areas that I would recommend, but the nearest air or rail service is in Winnepeg. One would have to arrange transport form there. I'd do it again. Just remember that you will be entering an area that sees nowhere near the number of people, so don't be surprised if places or trails seem overgrown.

If you are referring to the Manitoba version of Woodland Caribou PP near Red Lake, Ont., there are some threads on this area. Certainly, more remote, fewer people. Lots of fly-ins, outs. Better road access, relatively speaking from logging roads around Red Lake. Did a fly-in, paddle out trip in 99. Loved it. The fly-in part was a trip in and of itself. ??? ;)

Old Salt, this is what I'm referring to. There are a few portions of this park that are furthur north than Woodland Caribou. I remember one trip in 1998 where I was entering Kawaseecheewonk L. from the SE, and met a family from a town just north of where I lived in Wisc at the time (either that, or they may have been from the Quad Cities area of IA & IL). Small world! ;)

The topo maps on QJ now include Algonquin, Woodland Caribou, Quetico, Nopiming and Whiteshell Provincial Parks. The 1:50,00 maps for Atikaki and Woodland Caribou are in black and white though. Must be true wilderness...

It's wilderness enough. When I was there in 1998, my group and I went for 6 days without seeing another human being outside of our group. We even started a running joke: "If you see any mushroom clouds, bright flashes on the horizon, or if you hear any loud explosions, that means there are no more fishing limits." ;D
