I have been reading a lot of posts regarding foil packed meats (e.g. tuna, chicken, burger, etc.). I am wondering if this meets park regulations. I thought the regulation stated something to the effect, "non burnable and/or non reuseable food containers". I realize that if you wanted to get picky, a lot of freeze dried foods come in packs that do not burn totally, but I'm just asking here.... Any insight would be appreciated.

These food bags do contain foil.  And many I think burn them then pack out the foil, unfortunatlly many don't pack out the foil.  I have done both burn and wash bag and pack out.  These bags are the same type bag the freeze dried food comes in.  The reason we tend to burn them is to get rid of the food smells.  More ansd more people are using them we found lots of foil in the Q last year.  I think we packed out more that we found than what we had outselves.
By the way they also have ham in these bags. (cubed) I take a bag of ham and add it to the dried cheesey spud meals.

Can you purchase these foil packs at your local grocery store? I have never really looked but am thinking of trying them this year.

Some grocery stores do carry them-especially the tuna. Many will also have the chicken.

You will find them in the packaged meat area near spam usually.

For best success most people on the board post finding them at Walmart Supercenters. I have also found them at Target Superstores as well as many grocery stores.

Avaialability varies:

Grocery stores Tuna always, chicken sometimes, hamburger rarely

Target and Walmart seem to carry all three

I don't know how staunchly enforced this is since many freeze-dried food packages use foil, as well as Pop-Tarts, Kool-Aid, etc. I have had my campsites and/or permits checked half a dozen times by park officials, with no complaints. I would guess that unless you leave behind a pile of foil wrappers, there will not be a problem.

I noticed today that they sell foil-pouched individual slices of SPAM that are approximately the size you'd use on a sandwich and are decently thick slices.  At $.88 a slice I thought it was a rip-off until I considered PJ claims to eat his de-canned SPAM even after it starts turning pretty colors.  This would avoid the whole is-it-to-green-to-eat debate (not that I have any idea if PJ even thinks twice about it, nor do I have any idea how long it takes to turn green).  I have seen bloated moose carcasses in the park and those are bad enough.  I'd prefer to avoid seeing a kilt-clad PJ carcass out there (though alcohol does preserve tissue doesn't it?)

So for the Boxcar lovers out there, this product may be for you.  I suspect it would also work pretty well fried up and diced into any egg dish, or stews, or whatever.

Hey Snow Dog where did you see the foil pack spam?

Also I'll add most of the bigger grocerys now carry sliced ham in meat dept. area.  This is sealled in a plastic bag and has a shelf live of many months.

You may want to see if you can locate Sweet Sue brand ham in the foil pouches. I found them yesterday at one of the supermarkets here in FL tried it for lunch yesterday tossed with hot egg noodles, Italian bread crumbs that were fried in margarine. One word of caution drain the package of ham before dumping it into the noodles and bread crumbs. My picky kids love this combo.

Foil-pack SPAM was in the grocery store (Cub Foods).  It was right next to the cans of spam and near the foil-packed tuna.

I don't know if it is considered foil packed, rather pouched. Because the container really isn't foil and I'd think burning it would be pretty awful. Pack it in and pack it out, but it's better than trying to bring in a can and with the actual products they come out better than they do out of a can anyway.

Chuck if that were a strict rule I think many of us would be in trouble. I use zip lock baggies for just about everything, and most container's are not reusable or burnable. I think as long as it's not glass or a can your doing just fine.

SD Thanks.  Unfortunatlly we don't have and Cubs Foods here in KY.  I looked at our WalMart superstore no luck yet.  I'll have to look at Kroger if not there I guess I'll try spam.com   :D

After reading this thread I went out to WalMart last weekend and purchased tuna , chicken , and chili in foil and tested them for lunch.  The tuna mixed with mayo and relish made a great tuna salad sandwich. The chili was a 10 oz package(Sweet Sue) and was very tasty.  Mixed with a cup of pasta it would be enough to satisfy me for the entre.  I was too full to make chicken salad too, but it's on next Saturday's lunch menu.  Thanks for the great ideas.

Yes, right next to the others. There was chili and stew.If you try the stew, let me know what you think.

See my note above.  Just got back from a 7 day trip to Iron.  On one of our fishless nights we had the chili with noodles.  One cup dry large noodles with each 10 oz package.  Well worth the extra weight!.

Chicken of the Sea Whole Baby Clams, Shrimp, Crab, and Oysters all these are packed in foil pouches. This now opens the door to making Gumbo, Linguine with Clam Sauce, Crab Cakes my culinary juices are running.

I've tried the Shrimp version of this series (Chicken of the Sea pouches).  The taste is "OK," but the consistency was a bit rubbery.

Update, lunch wasn't to bad and almost a balance meal, ingredients: pork (what part) water, salt, modified potato starch, sugar and a healthy dose of sodium nitrite - yum. I can't wait to try PJs box cars.  :-/ :-/

I ussually bring some Tyson foil pouch chicken.
It can really spuce up a quick or late dinner of noodles or rice.
It tastes a little preserved, but generally speaking it's not all that bad.

I used to be able to get foil packed cooked ground beef at Wal-Mart stores but not any more and I haven't been able to find it other places. Any body else been able to find it?

Don't get me wrong, I love the foil packed meat idea.  We are taking some crab and shrimp packs with us along with a powdered alfredo sauce and noodels, maybe a glass of wine, candles ...might be somewhat romantic. :-*  I can't think of a better place to have a nice dinner.
Now spam on the other hand, never could convince myself that it was something I wanted to eat.  I do not like fat and trim all my meat very lean, therefore spam has been a tough sell to my body.

It's probably no worse than a hot dog. (FWIW - I like 'em but more than one hot dog will literally make my head spin. Not in a good way either.) Fried SPAM is actually pretty good IMO. We used to bring it in case the fishing sucked. Even when people knew what they were eating some even requested it on future trips. One vegetarian turned it down on principle as being 'red meat'...

Unfortunately, it probably doesn't come in individual serving sizes. I'd take it if it did.

Well db start looking at your local supermarket I was able to find them at a Publix here in Fla. or you can order it on line at   (You need to Login or Register sniff around the site it's a hoot. Check out the Spam Museum it's located in Austin Minnesota this internet is something else the things you can learn.

The Spam site IS a hoot!  I especially like the section "What is Spam" and the explanation of sodium nitrate is awesome!  I may have to try some of those singles next trip. Only thing missing is Monty Python . . .

Hmmm. I have an allergy to pork - probably really to pork fat. If I eat hot dogs made with pork I start feeling ill about 20 minutes later and never completely recover until it has cleared my system. Bacon and pork chops can get me so sick that I can hardly bear being in the sun (severe headaches). Probably why my ex-mother-in-law used to make refried beans with bacon fat  :o.

But, since I know it won't kill me, I eat all of that stuff anyway, because it is goooood. And I can thoroughly enjoy it for about 20 minutes.

For some reason, Spam doesn't seem to hurt me when I eat it  :-?.

I'm thinking that maybe we are twins, separated at birth  :question :question :question.
