Title: Perfect meal
Post by old_salt on Jun 17th, 2004 at 1:25pm
My idea of a perfect canoe country meal consists of a fresh steak and baked potatoes, followed by a bowl of wheaties and fresh milk enjoyed while relaxing in my freshly starched blue jeans, all portaged twice in my BWJ Ultimate Canoe Pac. ;) ;) :) :)  Any input?   Stew

Don't forget the fresh salad Old Salt.  I thought his favorite cereal was Frosted Flakes - am I remembering that wrong from the 300 times I've read about it?   ;D

Have to scratch the bake potato if your headed into Q this year. After reading those posts about the potato band in Canada. What would be a possible substitute for a Golden Yukon with plenty of butter and salt?

How right you are. However, one must be flexible and open to new ideas. Occasionally, in the past, some have thought me to be 'set in my ways'. But as one gets a little older, he discovers that certain changes are inevitable. Hence, the Wheaties. Frosted Flakes has too much sugar, and the effects of sugar excess are well documented in older folks, such as myself.
Aargh!! How could I forget the head of lettuce?? My short term memory seems to have been adversely affected by my sudden sugar withdrawal. As for the potatoes, please understand, triple portaging is not my style. I get around the pesky rangers by marinating my spuds in my leech locker. I've never had one yet to check my leeches for contraband spuds. Of course the leeches are on ice in my new ultimate BWJ cooler, which can be seen in any issue of the BWJ. That cooler is also in my BWJ ultimate canoe pack, or did I mention that earlier. I really should give up on reading back issues when I'm seeking creative ideas for future issues. I find, if I'm not careful, I may occasionally repeat an idea as it is my idea, and is worth repeating, even if I forgot I said it. Eat well, and did I mention that the steaks are from an elk I shot out west?
Keep the open side up.  Stew

Are you guys kidding me?  The best meal in canoe country is shore lunch with fresh caught walleye.

I don't doubt any of you who bring steaks, etc., but there is absolutely nothing better than walleye fillets that were swimming just minutes ago, lightly breaded and seasoned, and pan fried.  Add a side dish of wild rice and eat 'til you're ready for a nap! :)

Jackfish,
For the last 15 years I've become a catch and release guy, I no longer even bow hunt, it's a karma thing I suppose. However I do still swat mosquitoes, step on cockroaches and pick off ticks which then get squashed, I figure that anyone that comes back as one those deserve what ever they get.
I often wondered how good a stuff lake trout or fried walleye would taste while in the backcountry. I would have to depend on my traveling companions to kill it though, maybe next year, that is if I travel with someone that is not fishing challenged.

Howdy FLP...

What caused the change 15 years ago?  You mentioned a "karma thing".  I could venture some guesses, but they very likely would be wrong.  Just curious...

Although the chances of it happening are quite slim, given the opportunity, I'd whip up a shore lunch for you that your taste buds would remember for a while.  Might get you to change your mind. :)

Pete
