Title: On to Alaska!
Post by old_salt on Jun 30th, 2004 at 1:46pm
This Saturday, Snowdog and I, along with our entire family, are headed to Alaska for a cruise along the Inside Passage. We will fish at Ketchikan and see as many of the sights as possible. This is a first for us and we are excited to have this opportunity. Any tips? :) :)

I have a tip:

Be sure your camera is ready to take the picture of me catching the largest fish of the day!  Lens cap off, please.  Your shutter finger will be aching by the time it's over....
;D ;D ;D

Still sore about the rumored walleye you might have caught on McA? I heard it was a big one. Still searching for my camera. ;D ;D :D

I've been to Ketchikan three times, as a friend of mine was working at the Neets Bay salmon hatchery until this year (he's in Juneau now). I was fishing twice and bear hunting once. What kind of tips are you looking for?

I think I did a similar cruise. When I went, location scouts had gone before and all our stops were planned well in advance so there were no options for me to choose from. Because of that, I'm not sure where this stuff is but for what it's worth:

I didn't do it but I'm told and heard the train ride from Skagway (I think - probably) is pretty cool.

I've no clue which but the city where the 5 or however many glaciers meet the sea has helicopter tours. They take you out, drop you off and come get you later. They even give you boots to keep your toseys warm in the meantime. It's probably not cheap but two of our stops were in incredibly awesome places above the glaciers. That was the day I'll always remember as the day of the majestic views.

Glacier Bay(?) may be the most boring spot if that's on the itinerary. (Although the area before it will look very familiar.)

I was always happiest off the boat. Even the final long bus ride to I forget what airport was interesting. It's a reeeally pretty place and as much as I hate cruises, I gotta say that particular cruise was worthwhile.

We are Flying to Vancouver. Ketchikan is where we plan to fish. You will probably hear at some future time a report of who caught biggest, most fish. Then on to Juneau, for Mendenhall Glacier, and Skagway, for a road trip to Whitehorse. We do the Glacier bay and a fjord cruise, before finishing at Anchorage for the long flight back.
Snowdog, my bet is that mom will get the biggest fish. Never bet against mom! ;) ;) ;)
