db,
Since we have 2 members closing in on 1000 posts. ;D Have you given any consideration to a position designation for members who exceed 1000 posts? Perhaps something like "Senior Contributer"? |

Something like "Tribal elder" or "Windigo" come to mind. Then again, bragging rights get a little stale after a few hundred meters/rods/posts. We all have our priorities and maybe Jimbo and I need lives...? :-/ ;) ;D
Then again, leaving the default position labels intact ends up being one less hack for me to remember when doing script upgrades. This thread was a blanket reply to cover the numerous "hey what happened to my label" IM/e-mails that eventually trickled in when I unknowingly modified them a while back. Plus, at some point I intend to archive some of the older threads. Depending on how that's done, the Posts:# might be affected. Searching the archived posts would be faster though. Any members last 50 posts says more than any number could. Beyond that, (You need to Login or Register is meaningful. Personally, I'd prefer the labels also included a "Year Registered" but even that would not cover the old QJ forum nor the other forums on which people leave their tracks. Some names have been around forever. People come and go. Hopefully the ones people miss got lives... 8) |

HBJ & db,
How about, "El Bullshitto Supremo"? Or, "El Mucho Pomposo"? "Compulso Expresso"? "Big Hot Windigo"? Hey, how about a name-calling contest? That would slow the two of us down & move us towards "getting a life" for sure. My mouse might well go into hibernation for awhile. It's only appropriate that db "takes the cheese" (...be the "Big Cheese"?). Technically, if you combine db's "admin" function, he's already the "Big Hot Windigo" & blows me out of the water.... Rather than a new name, we should quickly establish a guessing contest to see which of the 2 (db & Jimbo) will establish themselves as ''1000 post contributors'' first, along with date and time. Jimbo has graciously offered a phink phlamingo, head attached, as grand prize. db may want to consider upping the offer. This would be similar to winning the annual ''ice out'' contest, which incidentally won me a Eureka Timberline 4 tent. So, who will win?
Jimbo will want to sew this up prior to the big Jam at Stumpy's Swamp Pond, so my guess is June 3 at 4:15pm. db will not reach 1000 until July 13 at 2:15AM. Now its your turn to guess! |

Oh, but if you think about it... you can possibly alter the outcome of that contest... for example if you reply to El BSS "Jimbo" threads with a stimulating response... he will answer... so people might try to manipulate the outcome... If stumpy were to reply to him on in the rendevous section with some luring remarks that could easily bring about 2-3 post quickly... ;D ;D
Whereas The BHW "db" usually answers in batches when he has time and something grabs his interest... many times late at night... Although the late night thing gives him the edge on availabilty to write... many like me have to do this as time allows at the job place... My Prediction is... the first to break the 1000 post mark will be The honorable "El BSS Jimbo" And I am saying June 1 somewhere around 8:15 in the morning... The "BHW db" is a little harder to predict... I am guessing he will celebrate the new moon in July on the 6th with his 1000th post... Bruce |

No. No. No. You don't understand. The counter is only a 3 digit number. Once they reach 999, the next number is ZERO and they have to start over!

Bruce and dd make valid points. We ALL know that it is not only possible, but even likely, that Jimbo will respond to our good-natured kidding and prodding. What is even more likely to generate a response from our lovable inukshuk, is a post defending or praising his wisdom. That's a neverfail deal.
dd, your point about the counter, illustrates the need to add a digit. Failing that, Jimbo will be faced with the conundrum of the millenium. What to do after reaching 999?? Does he dare go to 0? Hard to imagine Jimbo as the least contributer. Does he lose his stars and position? :o :o It all goes to show us... Less is more.... more or less... ;D ;D Will it happen in May or June? Time to enter your guess, I guess. |

I read throughout the day whenever I'm between things and/or just need/deserve a break. I usually reply to what I remember interesting me just before bedtime when I'm the only one around. The phone isn't ringing. The house is quiet - enough. Email may interrupt but I can answer most later. Being alone with my thoughts allows me to forget whatever crap I should be working on and just please and be myself. I find peace enough to play. It becomes a solo trip for a few minutes.
"El Mucho Pomposo"? "Compulso Expresso"? How 'bout "No Getico"? There are names on the top 50 list with styles meant to get noticed and some that tend to go somewhat unnoticed. Yet, when you think about it, most are always here with good insight/info or reappear on occasion sharing good honest opinions. Labels, go figure... Jimbo is an obvious elder w/o needing another label to prove it and even though I've not eaten anyone for a while, I'll gladly accept windigo. If it goes that far, someone will need to remind me though 'cause I rarely look at the score. Don't guess: Admin could always just promote or demote anyone, but, if there's one thing I know for sure, it's that I've learned much more by offering honest opinions and answering questions than anything else. Sweet dreams to all. :-* |

db,
Alas... lest we forget, the all powerful final say of "administrator" is in your honest and humble hands... ;D ;D We thank you for your good nature and putting up with some of our good natured ribbing and fun... And I concur with you on how much is learned here by asking and answering as honestly as possible, and I have developed some great friendships on line that will eventually lead to face to face meetings when time and geography permit... As far as who gets to 1000 or back to zero first... it is a lot like ice out... anyones guess is just that a guess... Eventually, I hope to reach that number, as my experience grows and I am able to contribute more... Thanks again for providing us with a place to play and learn, from those who have more knowledge... Closely resembles and on-line school, and db, has the job of Principal... I can relate to that!!! :o :o Take care and God bless all.... Bruce |

My prediction is elder Jimbo's (you did mention that you're in the 50 SOMETHING club ;)) odometer will roll over on June 2nd at 9:30am. The most revered db will place his 1000th QJ post on June 17th at 3:00am.
However, by late summer db will again overtake Jimbo as, without the daily activity on the Jamborree thread, Jimbo's posting will slow dramatically. Or maybe not. Hey (compared to most of you guys) I'm the new guy here, what do I know? ;D PS - That's one post closer to Junior Member for me. Whoopee! |

Jimbo's at 998. Will this be the day he rolls his odometer? Will Jimbo use post #999 to set the exact day, hour, and minute of his 1000th post so as many people as would like to can watch it happen "live"? Will there be any press releases? Inquiring minds want to know!
Yeah, I need a hobby. |

So, what's the difference between green stars and gold stars? ??? ??? ???

Looks like moderators get green ones in the forums they moderate. Seems like the stars themselves are bigger too. They must denote credibility and prestige or something like that. Deservedly so IMO. ;-)

How about the daisies (for want of a better description), what do those denote?

Daisies? I guess a better description is needed after all.

Looks like ICQ icons (similar to AOL IM).

Oh, I get it, the colored flowers (sorry didn't mean to offend calling them daisies). I don't do IM 'cause my computer can't spell any better than my old Royal. At least I can take my Royal camping.

I know nobody's counting, but I see that OS recently passed 1000 posts, joining the elite ranks of Jimbo & db. Is anyone else close?

Well I guess the site now has several members over 1,000 post. And db now is the first to get 2,000 post. Now should we come up with a title for thsoe who have made 2,000 post? that's a lot of posts. :o

All-
A few months ago, someone e-mailed saying they didn't paddle... post... but visited often because they appreciated QJ's "signal-to-noise ratio." Not only did I love that application of the term, I may have even learned something useful from it. It amazes me anyone pays attention to meaningless numbers. Does 2000+ give instant credibility to whatever opinions I spew? It should IMO. ;), but I doubt many of you believe it does. Geeheze, even facts can be dismissed when someone doesn't agree. Sure, I could easily add a 1000, 2000 juicy label but what point would it serve? The existing labels could very well be adversely affecting the signal-to-noise-ratio already. (That's exactly why QJ has never allowed links in signatures.) Please always speak up whenever you have specific knowledge or a novel opinion. BTW - I (somewhat recently) deleted ~250 members who've never contributed a single keystroke as well as had not visited in over a year. (You wouldn't portage dead weight like that either - would you?) Oddly enough, not a single one of those "Account deleted" e-mails bounced so that's how squeaky clean the member list is and how 'genuine' most members are. Personally, 2000+ is kind-of a sad commentary on how I spend my free-time considering I normally respond to far more e-mail and PM's than posts. (FWIW - Please understand if I'm slow to respond to e-mail and PMs. I read most of 'em when I get 'em but a gentle reminder never hurts if something specific was important to you and I had other things on my mind at the time.) "All we want are the facts (ma'am)." Well considered opinions are a welcome alternative, yadda yadda yadda in moderation is good too. |
