Basic
What difficulty level do you go for? What ever it takes to see new parts of the park, I will bushwack. What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? Prairie Portage is our usual entry into Quetico but I have entered from the central portion of the park. Paddling Bow or stern preference? I’m a tall guy and prefer stern but I’m willing to trade off. What is your paddling rhythm? Steady. Paddle the shoreline or beeline? That depends on circumstances, who I’m paddling with, lake conditions, and wind direction. How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? That depends on with whom I’m paddling with. I have paddled in some tough conditions with confidence but prefer not to paddle into a head wind with rough waters. Do you have strong navigation/map skills? Adequate with a compass and map. Portaging Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? Usually double, I have tripled, and would prefer to single. Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? On the back How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I also backpack. How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? I’ve hiked in the Everglades. Camping Style Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? On trips I usually cook but I would not mind taking a break and wash dishes. Fresh or dried foods? Fresh and home dried foods, I don’t like freeze dried. Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Both. Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? Oat meal or cereal, with strong coffee. How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? None, although if someone catches fish and cleans them I’ll eat them. Hang the food pack or ground it? I always hang, losing the food pack would be a reason to end a trip early. Axe? Saw? Both? Both. Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) That really depends on the day, if it is raining I will retire early. I really enjoy a fire nothing says out of doors as the smell of smoke and the crackle of a fire. On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? No later than 9 am. Fishing How much time do you like to spend fishing? I enjoy fishing and will stop at a spot that has structure I catch and release. Which species do you like to go after? Whatever is biting! How much tackle to you bring? 1 rod and reel and 2 plastic plano trays. Are you good with a fillet knife? No! Misc. Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? Not yet. Level of alcohol consumption? 2 bottles of wine and 2 flasks of rum. Smoker? Yes but I’m trying to quit. Is photography high on your list? Yes I love taking pictures of wildlife and people I’m traveling with. Do you like to go after pictographs? My routes are based on seeing different parts of the park but I certainly won’t avoid them. Do you like to go after waterfalls? See above. Do you like to go after the northern lights? We will set camp to face north or have a north facing outcrop when they are available. Personality If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? That’s why I prefer to travel in mid September to avoid mosquitos, ticks and black flies. What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Real cold/snow. If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Discuss it, I can be tolerant and haven’t drowned anyone yet. Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Losing the food pack. flp |
