Basics
Where do you live?
Des Moines, IA about 10 hours driving from Ely.
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping?
30 or so in BW but 100+ camping in various forms
Do you have the gear or use an outfitter?
I use an outfitter for canoe and if I forget something (I now own 3 canoe anchor bags)
Preferred/Typical party size?
6 max prefer 2
What length of trips do you do/available to do?
Usually 4-6 but will go longer if others can.  10 is my longest
Preferred season?
Spring or Fall
What % of the trip do you travel/base camp?
No preference as long as there is time to fish
What difficulty level do you go for?
Moderate, I am not 40 yet!  But soon, I do not go to wear myself out.
What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? Been through Mudro 2 times other than that I like to see new scenery, prefer Quetico fewer people.

Paddling
Bow or stern preference? Bow
what is your paddling rhythm? Steady but not out to win races
Paddle the shoreline or beeline? Shore preferred but if you gotta get somewhere
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? I have been known to push it but will error on the side of caution when the water us cold … at least normally
Do you have strong navigation/map skills? Yes, I take several map types along and study them daily (can you say nerd)

Portaging
Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? Double, I like some comforts
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Back – balance is important
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? The portages from Mudro to Fourtown are the worst I have done, I would like a challenge though, but not every day
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? I do not like getting wet feet but boots dry.  A bushwhack is good thing every now and then

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? I worked in a kitchen, I cook very well, but I do my share of dishes.
Fresh or dried foods? Fresh, eating is a hobby of mine that I really enjoy
Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Either depending on the time and food
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?  I like to have a quick bite and then out early fishing, back for breakfast/brunch
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? More is better
Hang the food pack or ground it?  Hang
Axe? Saw? Both? Both, be prepared
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) Both, but sometimes I think I am getting older and need my beauty rest
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? Early, cold breakfast and out before the wind picks up

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? More is better
Which species do you like to go after? Lake trout, bass, trout, walleye, trout, northern, trout…
How much tackle to you bring? Too much, I will allow anyone to inspect and give suggestions on what to leave behind
Are you good with a fillet knife? Except for those pesky ‘y’ bones.

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? I have a illness that requires me to fish at least once per day while out
Level of alcohol consumption? minimal
Are you a smoker? No
Is photography high on your list? yes
Do you like to go after pictographs? Yes but not as a destination
Do you like to go after waterfalls? Yes for the fishing and pictures
Do you like to go after the northern lights? Nice to look at but getting up early to fish is better

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? No, I have the stuff to deal with them, and I like to avoid them if possible.
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? 10 days of snow and sleet would be a bummer but I come prepared with quality gear
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? I tend to avoid conflict but will confront something with an open mind
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Loosing a major part of the gear, hole in the canoe, or being stuck with a big whiner!
