Where do you live? Iowa City
Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 120+
Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer? Because our crew includes a couple Californians who fly into Mpls. we bring s. bags and tents and rent SR 17 canoes and usually use our outfitter for food, cooking gear and packs, although we have gradually been adding our own gear.

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? typically a couple layover days in a 9-day trip
What difficulty level do you go for? medium
What area of the park are you most familiar with? south-central Quetico, more remote the better--typically enter via Back Bay/Basswood River.

Bow or stern preference? stern
What is your paddling rhythm? erratic (fishing&photography)
Paddle the shoreline or beeline? depends (prefer shore for fishing&wildlife viewing)
How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? We're all old surfers and sailors but typically are heavily-loaded including lots of photo-gear and usually a youngster along, so we avoid risky behavior (at least on the water).
Do you have strong navigation/map skills? yes

Portaging
double portage--I appreciate those walks in the woods for the flora&fauna (except the bugs).
Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Pretty well-organized after many trips--don't hand-carry much but fishing rods&paddles (velcro-strapped together).
How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? Gettin' old, but still able to handle the Sarah-McIntyre goat portage.
How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? We can stagger with the best in our age group.

Camping Style
Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? either/or
Fresh or dried foods? both
Cook over a fire, or over a stove? both--use a grill a lot
Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? anything coffee will wash down--will cook breakfast if base-camped.
How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? 3-4
Hang the food pack or ground it? Ground at night, covered and booby-trapped--hung if we're out of camp.
Axe? Saw? Both? both--we split beaver driftwood, wrap&carry enough with us at all times for a cook fire, rain or shine.
Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) both
On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? about an hour after sunrise.

Fishing
How much time do you like to spend fishing? at least 3-4 hours/day typically, depending on weather.
Which species do you like to go after? LT, LMB, SMB, W
How much tackle to you bring? 2 spin, 1 flyrod, good net
Are you good with a fillet knife? good enough--don't waste anything

Misc
Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? Various aches&pains due to old age/active lives=lots of ibuprofen consumed.
Level of alcohol consumption? single-malt scotch, small-batch bourbon and lake water--enough to toast the sunset every night.
Are you a smoker? Good cigars for bad bugs
Is photography high on your list? yes--large format b/w
Do you like to go after pictographs? yes
Do you like to go after waterfalls? sure--good fishing
Do you like to go after the northern lights? you bet

Personality
If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? We only go when the bugs are bad--less people/more fish
What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? wind
If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? We have all known each other for at least 30 years--if we couldn't handle each other's idiosyncracies we wouldn't still be going every year.
Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Can't think of any--it kills me to head out.
