I'm heading back into the BW on Aug. 12th after a 5 year hiatus and can't wait to get back. I hope to see you there.
Where do you live? Baltimore, MD via TX and St. Paul, MN Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 30ish Do you have the gear or use an outfitter? Partial, need canoes from the outfitter. Preferred/Typical party size? 4-8 Prefer 4-6 What length of trips do you do/available to do? Mostly 5 days but will shoot for 7 or 8 next year Preferred season? Late summer is the only option right now due to work schedule. I also prefer it for the warmer water. What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? I like to do most of my travel on the first day and then base camp/move once or twice the rest of the time. What difficulty level do you go for? I would prefer hard but it depends on the group. What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? I really like heading into EP #16 and am doing it again next week. However, I also like getting up into Q-- Namakan river/Thompson lake area. Paddling Bow or stern preference? Stern, almost always. What is your paddling rhythm? Depends on my Bow Paddle the shoreline or beeline? beeline, the faster to camp the better. How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? Been in 6 foot waves on LLC before, wouldn't call it comfortable but it was still bearable in the Voyageur I was in. Do you have strong navigation/map skills? I think so. I seem to be able to find my way pretty easily if I have some landmarks to follow. Portaging Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? I've never done anything but single. Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? Back---I just strap everything on. But I've never soloed so that would be a different story. How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? Can't say that I've run into too many of them. How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? Nice change of pace. As long as I don't run into too many consecutively. Camping Style Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Cook, I hate doing dishes. Fresh or dried foods? Dried, am doing Mountain house for all of our dinners on the upcoming trip but will do some frying if the fishing turns out to be good. Cook over a fire, or over a stove? Both. Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? Cook How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? At least a couple. Hang the food pack or ground it? Have floated it in the past, and bear barreled, but will be hanging it this time. Axe? Saw? Both? Axe Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) Both preferably. But if I was to choose one, I'd say sit around the campfire all night. I love campfires. On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? Sun-up Fishing How much time do you like to spend fishing? Not too seriously but probably a couple hours a day on average. Which species do you like to go after? Smallies and Pike How much tackle to you bring? One small 6"x4" lure box. Are you good with a fillet knife? With everything except NP. Still can't get all those friggin' bones out. Misc Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? Nah, other than the fact that I'm getting older and slightly plumper. Level of alcohol consumption? Once or twice on the trip to relax with the trip-mates. Not getting hammered though. Are you a smoker? Nope Is photography high on your list? It's on the list, but I'm more concerned with the relaxation and the memories Do you like to go after pictographs? Sure, but they're also not a huge priority. Do you like to go after waterfalls? We'll definitely be making a couple day trips to play in the falls. Do you like to go after the northern lights? I never expect them but love to see them. They can absolutely MAKE a trip. Personality If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? Nothing can ruin a trip, other than a serious injury resulting in having to leave early. What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? Was in a blowdown about 10 years back, I'd say that was difficult. Trees crashing down around the tent in the middle of the night is a bit hair-raising. It sounded like a freight train making its way through the forest before it hit. If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Let's get it out there and resolve it. Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Absolutely nothing. |
