Basics

Where do you live?  New Albany, Indiana.  

Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 500+

Do you have the gear or use an outfitter?  a little of both

Preferred/Typical party size? 2-6

What length of trips do you do/available to do? 6-14 days

Preferred season? spring/fall

What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? 50%

What difficulty level do you go for?   Whatever………but NO MONSTER portages…Kawnipi was the longest trip to dade.

What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or
explore new areas?  Gunflint Trail/Saganaga Area
 
Paddling.    Better than Average…….No whitewater

Bow or stern preference?  Stern

What is your paddling rhythm?  Like to figure a cadence and stay with it.

Paddle the shoreline or beeline? Beeline, unless MONSTER weather, or weak paddlers.

How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in?  2-3 ft rollers are TOUGH but doable.

Do you have strong navigation/map skills? Yes……..better than most.
 
Portaging  
==============

Do you usually single/double/triple/or  portage? Double mostly, but sometimes TRIPLE.

Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry?  Most on the back.  Some in the hands, or strapped to the canoe

How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? It’s a workout but it can be done

How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs?  I hate BOGS…..but will do them to get to good fishing.
 

Camping Style  
==============

Would you rather cook or wash the dishes?  I’m the cook, DAMN IT.

Fresh or dried foods?  Fresh for day 1 and 2………Packaged after that.

Cook over a fire, or over a stove?  Stove, except for MONSTER steaks on day 1.

Cook breakfast or breakfast bars?  A little of both.  Depends on the trip.

How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip?  Two or three.

Hang the food pack or ground it? On the ground.

Axe? Saw?  Both…Gerber CampAxe and Sven 20” saw.

Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn?  A little of both.

On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water?  We don’t travel……..BUT EARLY.
 

Fishing  
==============

How much time do you like to spend fishing? 8 to 10 hours a day.

Which species do you like to go after?  Smallies, the Lakers, then Walleye.  Northerns are scumsuckers.

How much tackle to you bring? Way FREAKIN too MUCH.  About 10 lbs.

Are you good with a fillet knife?  Pretty dang good…….
 
Misc  
==============

Do you have any medical conditions to be considered?  Overweight.

Level of alcohol consumption?  Not too much…….occasional shot or 2.

Are you a smoker?  Nope…….NEVER.

Is photography high on your list?   yes

Do you like to go after pictographs? yes

Do you like to go after waterfalls? yes

Do you like to go after the northern lights? yes
 
Personality  
==============

If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? Nope

What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? snow

If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it?  Depends on the situation

Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home?  Bad group dynamics.  Assholes can ruin everything.
