Title: Re: Member Profiles (are added here) Post by ProRecreator on Jan 6th, 2011 at 3:57pm
Note: This is cut and pasted from the Inukshuk Forum. Not sure if it contains all the details that some other posts have. Am interested in potential solo partners for a September, 2011 trip in the BW.
Basics Where do you live? NEAR BOULDER COLORADO Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? ABOUT 100. HALF IN BW, HALF IN THE Q. Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer? I HAVE THE GEAR. USE OUTFITTER FOR TOW OR TO RENT A SOLO, IF NEEDED. Preferred/Typical party size? 4 OR LESS. What length of trips do you do/available to do? 8-12 DAYS. Preferred season? MID MAY TO EARLY JUNE OR LATE SEPTEMBER, OR AS ADJUSTED DUE TO RECENT WARMER TEMPS. What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? THAT DEPENDS ON THE ROUTE AND OTHER PARTY MEMBERS. WE'VE DONE BOTH. What difficulty level do you go for? HARD ENOUGH TO GET AWAY FROM MOST PEOPLE. What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? RECENT TRIPS HAVE BEEN IN KNIFE/KEK/OGISH/THOS/FRAZER/INSULA AREAS. IN THE Q, A FEW TRIPS TO MCINTYRE AND TWO N/S ROUTES FROM BEAVERHOUSE AND CLAY LAKE TO ELY. WANT TO DO THE HUNTERS ISLAND ROUTE BEFORE I GET TOO ANCIENT. Paddling Bow or stern preference? STERN ONLY; TOO TALL FOR BOW. What is your paddling rhythm? SLOW AND STEADY (LIKE GUMBO). POWER AS NEEDED. Paddle the shoreline or beeline? GENERALLY STAY AS CLOSE TO SHORE AS REASONABLE. WILL BEE LINE ON THE WAY IN. How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? BEEN SCARED ENOUGH TIMES TO UNDERSTAND THE RISKS. ITS BETTER TO BE LATE THAN WET OR DEAD. Do you have strong navigation/map skills? YES, ALTHOUGH ON TRIP LAST MONTH I USED MAP AND COMPASS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN SEVERAL TRIPS (GPS BELLY UP) AND I WAS JUST A TAD RUSTY. Portaging Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage? THE OLDER I GET, THE MORE TRIPS I MAKE. IT'S THE COST OF DOING BUSINESS. Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? MOSTLY ON BACK, AND HAVE DEVELOPED A WORKABLE SYSTEM FOR CARRYING A FEW THINGS IN HAND. How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I CAN DO THEM. I HANDLE THEM BEST WHEN THEY ARE IN THE REAR-VIEW MIRROR. How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? BEEN WET UP TO ARSE MORE THAN ONCE. NOT MY PREFERENCE, BUT IF THERE ARE FISH OR OTHER SIGNIFICANT ATTRACTIONS INVOLVED, I CAN BE PERSUADED Camping Style Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? WILLING TO DO EITHER AS LONG AS THE PARTNER WILLINGLY DOES THE OTHER. Fresh or dried foods? PREFER FRESH. DON'T LIKE FREEZE-DRIED MUCH, BUT OTHER DRIED FOODS WORK VERY WELL. Cook over a fire, or over a stove? STOVE(S) ONLY Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? USUALLY BOIL WATER FOR INSTANT CEREAL. ONCE OR TWICE PER TRIP HAVE PANCAKES. How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? THREE OR FOUR Hang the food pack or ground it? I AM A RECOVERING HANGER. NOW I AM A CONFIRMED HIDER. Axe? Saw? Both? NEITHER Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) EARLY RISER. MIGHT STAY UP LATE IF SKY IS CLEAR. On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. Fishing How much time do you like to spend fishing? IF WE ARE GROCERY FISHING, AS LITTLE AS POSSIBLE TO ALLOW TIME FOR CLEANING, ETC. OTHERWISE IT'S THE MAIN ACTIVITY, BUT NOT MANDATORY EVERY DAY ALL DAY. Which species do you like to go after? THE BIG FOUR, WHATEVER IS BITING. How much tackle to you bring? A MANAGEABLE AMOUNT. Are you good with a fillet knife? PRETTY GOOD. Misc Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? OTHER THAN THE LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF LIVING IN A GRAVITATIONAL FIELD ALL MY LIFE, NONE Level of alcohol consumption? A MEASURED RATION (3 OZ OR SO) PER DAY. Is photography high on your list? YES. Do you like to go after pictographs? THE ONES I'VE SEEN (ONLY A FEW) DON'T STRIKE ME AS WORTH GOING OUT OF THE WAY. Do you like to go after waterfalls? AGAIN, IF THEY ARE ON THE ROUTE, GREAT. THEY CAN BE VERY FISHY. Do you like to go after the northern lights? NOT SURE HOW TO DO THAT, EXCEPT TO GO NORTH. Personality If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? I PREFER TO TRAVEL AT TIMES WHEN BUGS ARE FEWER OR ABSENT. What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? COLD AND RAIN TOGETHER. WOULD RATHER IT JUST SNOWED. If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? BETTER TO TALK ABOUT IT. Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? GIVEN THE EFFORT TO GET AWAY AND GET UP THERE, VERY FEW THINGS THAT I CAN IMAGINE. Other pertinent info? I'M INTERESTED IN FINDING COMPETENT SOLO PARTNERS FOR A HUNTER'S ISLAND LOOP IN THE 2012-2014 WINDOW. I WILL LIKELY BE IN ELY SOMETIME IN SEPT 2011 AND WOULD WELCOME THE CHANCE TO MEET POTENTIAL PARTNERS. WILL POST AGAIN BEFORE MY NEXT TRIP. |
