Basics
Where do you live? Norfolk, Nebraska Approximate number of previous nights spent canoe camping? 20 Do you have the gear or use an outfitterer? I have everything. and enough for 6-8 others Preferred/Typical party size? prefer solo, but like trips with my sons. What length of trips do you do/available to do? usually 6-7 days. Preferred season? August or September, as that is when work allows me the best get away time. What % of the trip do you travel/base camp? I prefer to move almost everyday but have based camped (fishing) What difficulty level do you go for? not an issue What area of the park are you most familiar with and do you want to spend time there or explore new areas? Been to BWCA 2x WCPP once. so not that familiar. Paddling Bow or stern preference? Always Stern What is your paddling rhythm? dont know that I have rhythm, Paddle the shoreline or beeline? shoreline solo, straightline tandem How nasty of water are you comfortable paddling in? I have been in some bad stuff tandem, but take few risks solo, as I plan on making it home, and no one is there to save your butt. Do you have strong navigation/map skills? yes compass and garmin and topos, and park maps Portaging Do you usually single/double/triple/or? portage?always double sometimes triple the short ones. Do you carry everything on your back, or alot of hand carry? On my back, I like my hands free except for Nalgene of water How well do you handle the mountain goat portages? I go at a slow pace and then it works out well for me on the beasty portages. How well do you handle the boot sucking bogs? They suck!!! Camping Style Would you rather cook or wash the dishes? Both seems like I do all the cooking and dishes Fresh or dried foods? fresh in groups, dried on own. Cook over a fire, or over a stove? stove Cook breakfast or breakfast bars? oatmeal and cocoa with schnapps How many fish meals do you like to have during a trip? in 7 days a couple Hang the food pack or ground it? bear vaults solo, CCS food pack hung with group and bear vaults Axe? Saw? Both? Both plus a Knife Sit around campfire all night OR wake at crack of dawn? (or both) ALWAYS have campfire and get up before the sun On a travel day, what time do you like to hit the water? Seems like I am always up about 5 but don't get on water till about 7:30 Fishing How much time do you like to spend fishing? I love to fish, but not necassariy while canoeing, lots of other stuff to see and enjoy. Which species do you like to go after? WALLEYE How much tackle to you bring? Not much one little box Are you good with a fillet knife? better then average Misc Do you have any medical conditions to be considered? bad knee but I just am careful and pace myself Level of alcohol consumption? solo not much in a group, I PARTY Are you a smoker? a has been smoker Is photography high on your list? yes and video Do you like to go after pictographs? yes Do you like to go after waterfalls? never have Do you like to go after the northern lights? would be nice but have not Personality If the bugs are bad, will it ruin the trip for you? NEVER i take bug dope and a thermacell. What weather conditions are difficult for you to deal with? High winds to me are a bummer If we've got a problem, would you rather discuss it or bury it? Always discuss it Other than illness or injury what events or conditions would make you want to quit a trip early and head home? Other than illness or injury Nothing would make me want to quit a trip and go home. Added question, do you take your dog? I am going to take my lab Molly on my next solo (so is that a solo?) |
