Title: North Country Trail/Black River Harbor Post by The_Beaver on Mar 6th, 2005 at 1:26am
curious if any of you have hiked or paddled the Black River Forest area north of Bessemer, Michigan, on Lake Superior.
I've camped and paddled the big lake shore and hike the trails along the river. Great waterfalls. This summer we're hiking from the Porcupines to the Lake. Great country...wondering if any QJers have been there? Beav |

Been there Beaver,
I love that country - lived in Ironwood for 2 years while attending community college. Good thing I wasn't a paddling junkie at the time or I'd have dropped out. The downhill skiing cost me enough GPA. I got pinched for drinking beer at Black River Harbor one night, cost me $25. My favorite spot is at the mouth of the Presque Isle River on the west end of the Porkies. Also is the view from the top of the Copper Peak ski jump (the tallest constructed jump in our hemisphere). You can see across Superior to Thunder Bay on a clear day. Thanks for bringing this up. -YB |

Last summer my girlfriend and I camped at the park. We paddled down the shore about a mile. It wasn't the greatest weather--a gentle mist fell most of the day.
I packed a cooler with Corona and the fixins for an authentic clam bake. Dug a pit, lined it with seaweed, and filled 'er up with clams, corn on the cob, potatoes, and two fiesty lobsters. Covered up the pit and let it steam. Made a driftwood fire, sipped our Coronas, and loved life. The next day we hiked all the falls off the beaten trail. Love that place... Beav |
