Been there Beaver,
I love that country - lived in Ironwood for 2 years while attending community college.  Good thing I wasn't a paddling junkie at the time or I'd have dropped out.  The downhill skiing cost me enough GPA.  I got pinched for drinking beer at Black River Harbor one night, cost me $25.  My favorite spot is at the mouth of the Presque Isle River on the west end of the Porkies.  Also is the view from the top of the Copper Peak ski jump (the tallest constructed jump in our hemisphere).  You can see across Superior to Thunder Bay on a clear day.  Thanks for bringing this up.
