Title: Bushwackers Jamboree 2005....update Post by on Feb 23rd, 2003 at 4:25am
Hi Gang........Stumpy here...
It's been over two years since my first post on this idea...back on the old forum. Some of you thought it was to far off...Now, we are more than halfway there, and less than two years away from reserving permits for it. There have been a few criticts, but let me say this...It's not a contest. It's not about me. It won't be crowded, and it won't be easy. Yes, I'm calling the shots this time. Maybe those who make it there can all call the shots for 2010. Those who make it in 2005 will be the charter members of the "B.U.G.B.I.T. Club" (better understand going bushwacking is torture, Club) Here are the basics:: WHO...Whoever can get a permit and get to the location on the date(s) to be named later. No day trippers (campers only)...we will gather in the evening. WHAT...It will be an informal meeting of tough and hardy travelers, where stories and information will be told. Knowledge, that has been earned, and should continue to be earned. WHERE...It will be on a lake near the middle of Quetico, with no name, no portage trail to it (NONE), good depth, good water, plenty of bugs and campable shoreline, and maybe good fishing. WHEN...It will be in mid-June 2005 (when bugs are bad and so are voyageurs)...And every five years after that...I hope. WHY...Because the best information should be earned. Because I hold back on some stories on this board and I know others do to. Because exploring those no-name lakes makes for great adventure. Because I want to meet other bushwackers and hear where they've been and tell them where I've been (like Dettbarn Lake), and exchange great stories. Because I want to shake the hand of anyone that gets there ! HOW...Barring any changes in the permit system...I will anounce the exact date and location on this website at...10:00 PM (CST), DECEMBER 7th, 2004. Thank You Stumpy |

It still seems like a long time off. But thats a good thing gives all of us enough time to plan ahead.
Mr Bogwalker and I are looking forward to it. Can't wait till you name the lake area. I'm thinking of getting the permit the farthers away from it. Or at least a couple of the hardest portages getting there. I'd like to be warmed up for the no portage bushwack. QPassage |

I haven't responded to this before, although I have followed the discussion and wondered if it will really pan out. I've always observed that "talk's cheap, it takes money to buy whiskey", and I don't get into talking much. It sounds like the BWJ just might actually make it and if my bones and joints hold together long enough I'd like to maybe join you guys. My arthritis requires I use a cane while portaging my canoe and pack, and I'm not the fastest guy over the portage any more (probably never was), but I've never been the first one to quit and I always get there sooner or later. It'd be a pleasure to swap stories around your campfire.

Carl...If you walk into that lake with a cane, we will all be humbled. Whoever "we all" is.
Would love to meet you...but please be careful. I have not done everything I've said I would (like putting my 65 Plymouth Valiant back together), but when it comes to canoe trip stuff, my word is good. As we all find out...time flies the older we get...It will be here before we know it. Take care....Stumpy |

Hey...I thought since there are some new members as of recent, I would bring this post back up to the top.
Also want to say that the small number of responses, I feel is good. I'm only hoping to draw the most adventurous. Crash on Stumpy |

Hey Stumpy, while I have not posted on this topic before, I would like to voice my support for this event. I hope to make it and would look forward to the challenge. I am even considering making this my first solo trip into the Q. It would be nice to finally meet some of the regulars on this board too.

Stumpy,
It definitely won't be the first time (and probably won't be the last time) I get lost in the woods up there. In fact, some family members tell me that "getting lost" is one of my defining personal characteristics. Frankly, if you guys actually do see ME around, YOU are probably on the wrong lake. Anyway, sounds like a highly worthy initiative. Directionally-challenged or not, I'm game. However, I DO appreciate your intention to announce the location on 12/7/04. That should give even me ample time to zero-in on your lost-lake destination. Jimbo |

Ranger & Jimbo...Welcome, Welcome,
Looking forward to meeting you. A word of caution about the soloing though. I'd hate the thought of someone deep in those woods with a twisted or broken ankle or leg. Anything that warrants asistance could get you killed if you're alone out there. I once turned back on a bushwhack because my friends 13 year old son was with me. I got to thinking...If something happened to me I can't be sure he will get out on his own. Maybe some of you on the forum can team up. Good luck, Be safe...Stumpy |

Yo, Stumpy -
Excellent point about the dangers of soloing, in general, and especially re: "bushwhacking." An outfitter I once used told me about a "soloing" fellow he helped carry out the week before. The guy had nearly cut off his own thumb while hatcheting wood for his campfire. At least he had camped where he could be found, alongside a busier waterway, rather than by himself on your Mystery Lake. Anyway, don't YOU fret about breaking your own ankle en route. I'll be glad to give you a ride using my new Wenzel Load Hauler (see Food Pack & Pantry thread). I just can't promise that I will be able to deliver you to the correct lake.... Jimbo |
|
Title: Re: Bushwackers Jamboree 2005....update Post by Stumpy on Apr 16th, 2003 at 3:11am
Wenzel Load Hauler ?.......I'll splint my leg with a sapling and duct tape, and walk out first.

|
Title: Re: Bushwackers Jamboree 2005....update Post by Jimbo on Apr 16th, 2003 at 1:01pm Stumpy, Ah, that would be a much better solution for the both of us! Being "directionally-challenged", I would simply follow your duct-taped, leafy, limping, splinted self to the Bushwhacker's Paradise in the middle-of-nowhere. Once we arrived, I might even have some medication for you, useful in alleviating pain resulting from broken ankles (tick & mosquito bites, hook barbs in thumbs, whatever ails you). Of course, I suppose I should allow for the distinct possibility that you distill your own vintage medication from wild berries, bug larvae, tree sap, and such. Hmmm... that might well be an improvement over what I carry. Jimbo |

I've been reading about the Jamboree for the couple years you've been talking it up. It sounds interesting, and I'm sure it would be a hoot.
I guess the big question I would have is this: Exactly how are we going to know where this location is? Are you going to give a grid location, a GPS location or show a picture of a map with a tack in it? Setting a meeting spot is nice, but considering the terrain, it has to be a real place with real coordinates. The last thing I want to do is wander around through the woods for 2 weeks trying to find a spot that only exists on a Website and in your imagination. |
|
Title: Re: Bushwackers Jamboree 2005....update Post by Stumpy on Apr 19th, 2003 at 5:53pm
dwight....Don't worry about it.
There will be no doubt about its location after I post it on 12-7-2004. If it stays where I am now considering, I could describe it in a paragraph. I want the challenge to be in the distance to the bushwhack and then crossing the final terrain...not in playing a location guessing game. I might post a piece of map with an arrow saying "here". I might describe it perfectly or with obvious clues. If it is with obvious clues it will be very simple...just hopefully witty. I'm sure others on the board will come out and state where I mean in that case. I would correct any misinterpetations. It will be on a lake about the size of Side Lake in Quetico (biggest hint I've given out yet). But I never said it would be easy. Stumpy |

Stumpy-we all look forward to the challenge and the secrecy and thinking about where it might be is half the fun to me. Thanks for the new clue it may confirm my current thoughts about where we are headed. I look forward to meeting all the others bushwackers in 2005, especially you Stumpy. I will bring a couple of stories to add to yours that will be new to all in attendance. See you in 2005-bogwalker

Hi,
I'm just dragging this old thread up because the anouncement date for the Jamboree is just 1 year away (Dec. 7th, 2004). The only change is that, out of respect for this website and all the wonderful people here, I am changing the anouncement time to 7:00 PM. CST. This means that you will all be the first to know the dates and location...not that it really matters, because permits won't be available for another month after that. If you don't already know about the Jamboree, just go back to the start of this thread...it's all there. Or, you can search the "old forums" to read about the start of this idea, 3 years ago, by a younger and cockier, Stumpy. (bad words to throw together ;)) Keep crashing brush and I'll see you in 18 months !..... ............. .................... ........................ .............over those eastern ridges, that island is a flower......... |

Stumpy,
Thanks for bringing it 'back up.' Those of us who are new members now have a great excuse to buy a whole new set of maps and do much dreaming and planning. I'm going to have to practice this 'bushwacking with a canoe' thing. I have done off-trail in the Rockies and the Ozarks with a backpack - but humping a kevlar helmet through the woods sounds like a whole different experience. This may even change my thinking on what the requirements are for my next boat. Thanks for the new dream!! -- Goat |

I use an aluminum helmet.
Why 05 ? because it's a nice round number...and easy to remember if we do it every 5 years. Also, some people have been planning on it for a few years now, and I don't want to pull a switcheroo on them. I remember some guy saying his son would be a good age to go then....But will he be old enough for the Jug ?? who knows ! |

Stump:
The dream is great -- but the statistics are not that promising. The odds of me being able to get the vacation approved at the right time - and it sounds like it might take a two week block - along with getting a permit puts me at about 3 to 1 against even getting started. Assuming I have about a 50/50 shot of finding the place if I do get to start - I'm at about 6 to 1 against actually showing up. But - I've always liked going against the odds!! -- Goat |

Hey Goat!
Bah, bah humbug! If we seniors band together & form our own flotilla, we can be tipping the bottle (of Geritol) & have fish on the griddle when Stumpy & the rest of the youngsters arrive! Of course, IF they don't arrive, we may have to ask ourselves some troublesome questions...such as: what park is this?, what day is this?, where is the nice lady in the white frock who usually takes care of me? Come to think of it, you're absolutely right. This will be pretty much a crap shoot...and I ain't been feelin' real regular lately. Oh, well. C'est la vie et vivre la Jamboree! Jacques-bo |

Two weeks round trip, to go to the BWJ 05 ?.....Nahh !
You should be packing real light....right ? So, 2 days should get you near the middle of the park. 1 day for the bushwhack...It should take half a day, at most. 2 nights at the Jamboree. Coming back out should be easier...figure the bushwhack plus a good days traveling part way back...1 day. 1 more day to exit park. That's just 5 nights !...throw in a couple more layover days, and it's just a 7 night-8 day trip (with 3 layover days). I think most of you could do this if you TRAVEL LIGHT and EFFICIENTLY. If you think I'm talking, my travel time...No...I could and might go to the pre-bushwhack lake the first day...and if anyone bet me, I'd go all the way there in a day. That would'nt be fun though, except to say we did it. I'm leaning towards a Tuesday & Wednesday get together. Then you could leave your entry point on Saturday and come out on Saturday...8 days, 7 nights and 4 of those days just to get there. OR, Sat. to Sun.....9 day trip ! Gotta get those permits you want !.....Me ? I'll be there no matter the permit I'm stuck with. Who's that I see walking in those woods. Why it's little Red Riding Hood. Hey there Little Red Riding Hood. You sure are looking good. You're everything that a big bad wolf could want. AHWOOOOOOO0000000ooooooo ! that's to scare off the fence-sitters :) |

OK, Jimbo - I can see it now, the geriatric brigade takes the lake a day early and is there to welcome the youngsters when they arrive. It is going to be interesting to see what the mix is that actually makes it. I'd put my money on the 'wisdom of the ages' rather than 'the exhuberance of youth' on this one. Stumpy - thanks for the 'travel time' estimates. If you are looking at a Tuesday/Wednesday in the middle of June of 2005 we would be talking about the 14th and 15th. That would make the most desired permit dates Saturday and Sunday, the 11th and 12th. Some of us with velocity impediments might want to try for Friday the 10th, with the marathon canoe racing teams going out on Monday the 13th. Laying the groundwork - got it on the calader, mentioned it to the wife to get her accustomed to the idea . . . Odds are improving -- Goat |

Stumpy -
Well - this time my wife just said 'That sounds like fun,' which was more a response that - 'OK, I heard you - and it's too far in the future to make it an issue.' My wife is accustomed to me taking off into the BW - normally on solo trips. The idea that I am actually meeting some other people in the middle of Quetico sounds like a reasonable thing to her. Knowing about this trip this far in advance gives me pleanty of time to get her used to the idea. Now I may have forgotten to mention the Bushwack part of the trip the first time I brought the subject up - but that will come up later. My son-in-law is going up with me this Memorial day, so that trip has the current focus. Just managing expectations! -- Goat |

Old Goat -
You are a very wise Old Goat, indeed! Started same process here last year. Heck, I even used it to justify my "need" for a lighter weight canoe as a gift from Santa. Heck, nobody here wanted to be blamed for old Jimbo collapsing under the weight of a heavy canoe as he hacked he way through the bush, up the cliff, & onward to Stumpy's paradise! I bet if I had whined a little bit more I could have held out for a Le Tigre (3 pounds lighter but several hundred dollars more)! Jimbo |

Hey QP -
You're not even in MY league until you get your wife to let you MOVE UP HERE (well...at least to the Cities)! I've gotten MY "extra trip" in EACH of the three years since we moved here from North Carolina. On the other hand, the wife is balking considerably at my suggestions re: moving even further north. So, I MAY have hit my northern limit. Also, she has gotten smart. She now "taxes" my wilderness ventures with demands of her own. She insists on "balancing" my Great White North ventures with time spent on "family trips" to more tropical regions. Yuck! I guess I shouldn't complain. I'm the one who promised her a "cruise" a few years back. Yep, that year the family flotilla "cruised" right throuh Pickerel, Jesse, & Quetico Lakes. Jimbo |

Thanks Beemer, but as I recall, you were right there with us at the end.
More portages in that race, would suit me just fine. When everyone pulls out just before the dam and clogs up the take-out and put-in, I pass many canoes. I take out about 50-100 yards early and run through the woods (bushwhacking :) ), and around the masses. Then I put in a safe distance ahead. Hey, they never say how short your portage should be ;). Yes, I did crack my paddle on about my 3rd stroke. I had to keep the Babe Ruth side towards me for the next 19 miles or I would have been left with a stick. I think we (my nephew and I) finished somewhere around 17th or so, out of about 100 in our class. The year before I placed 3rd, with my cousin. If you saw him you'd know why. See you in about 5 months. |

Stumpy,
IF you're trying to dispel the "party in the woods" impression, I'm not so sure that calling it "Rendezvous" helps much. Historically speaking, the Voyageur's BIGGEST PARTY BASH of the year was called "Rendezvous"!! Lots of drinking, carousing, wrestling, fighting, eye-gouging, merry-making, etc. & so on.... The Bushwhackers Jamboree sounds like a marvelous idea. Regrettably my blood has thinned quit a bit and I will not be able to attend, unless the coordinates are Longitude 80.96 Latitude 25.41. Regards, flp |

Timetables are usually set around a cultures needs. For example schools are shut down during July and Aug to accomodate farmers. Fathers and mothers typically book holidays during this time of the year. I would enjoy attending the gathering but would need a date to fall in the above months. Are you firm on mid June time frame?

West longitude: sense is (-) negative North latitude: sense is (+) positive convert decimal point of degrees to minutes (divide by 60) Looks to me like "Everglades National Park" Lets see now . . . Florida Everglades + June = Ohhh Wilber! -YB |

Just a thought.
The idea of a bushwhacker's rendezvous was and still is interesting. The clues certainly have been. After all these years I'm afraid I'll almost be disappointed when the location is finally revealed. Stumpy, it's your show but I have a suggestion 'cause I've seen wild guesses all over the place. What about just reposting the most helpful clues on Pearl Harbor day? It might solve a problem or two plus if someone actually got it wrong they'd they'd still have an interesting trip and probably come back with a story or two. Just a thought. It's your deal. Bullheads can be very tasty though. Quetico bullheads? Really? My mouth is watering. |

Here's some of Stumpy's posts about BWR 2005 that he left at another BB...this is in three parts as the God in the Machine sez one post is too long!
-----quote----- Brushcrashers Jamboree 2005 by Stumpy Date & Lake will be revealed in 2004, in time for permit reservations. Until then crash some brush, discover lakes, and save up your tales of portaging adventure. This will be an informal meeting on a very secluded (no portage trail to it) Quetico lake. Any takers??? - Stumpy - Posted on Feb 24, 2001, 7:20 PM bushwackers jamboree 2005 by Stumpy Just a reminder, its still in the plans. Bushwackers Jamboree coming to a lake not near you in 2005. - Stumpy - Posted on Sep 20, 2001, 10:47 PM Bushwackers Jamboree 2005 by Stumpy I have heard from a few of you regarding this idea. Here it is again...I am inviting fellow Bushwackers to join me on a remote Quetico -NO-NAME- lake. Some questions this has brought up have gone along the lines of who, what, where, when, why etc. I'll try to answer these. WHO: Whoever reserves their permits in time and is tough enough to get there. I'll be there alone or with a friend. WHAT: Just a gathering of people to exchange bushwacking stories and to check out the fishing and one more lake. WHERE: I will reveal that in 2004. It will be a very remote, no-name lake in the middle of Quetico. (with no portages to it) WHEN: Probably mid June (when bugs are bad and voyagers are also) 2005. WHY: Because I can never quench my thirst to see another lake. WHY (for you): To meet Stumpy. Who is Stumpy? I am the guy who's been to Dettbarn and beyond. Our last canoe trip we went from Prarie Portage to Cutty Lake our first day with standard weight Grummans and canvas packs. We set up camp in daylight. I've been canoeing Quetico every year since 1975 and been to over 400 lakes. I haven't worn bug repellent since 1976. I have many stories to tell, but clicking on the internet does not make you worthy to hear them. See you in 2005 if your good enough. - Stumpy - Posted on Sep 23, 2001, 6:17 PM Love "out of the way " lakes by Stumpy 1---I would say no, there are not many of us that go into these remote lakes. 2--On lake names, it's hard to tell. Some of the names are very old, however, Goodier Lake is named on some old maps I have from the 50's and guides I've talked to who worked at the old lodges on Basswood Lake referred to Goodier by name. However, if you have connections with the map company you have a chance at naming the lakes as in the case of Bill Rom, Jr. naming Rom Lake after bushwacking into there many years ago. I would not consider Goodier Lake a bushwack as there are portage trails all the way there. Try a lake like Dettbarn if you want a real bushwack! If you look further back on this board a few pages you will find reference to a "bushwacker's jamboree 2005". I have had this in the plans for a couple of years and periodically post information on it. It will be a chance for like-minded adventurers to gather and enjoy the wilderness. Take care Bo and maybe I'll see you in 2005. Stumpy Posted on Nov 17, 2001, 7:11 PM Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005...... Survey.... by Stumpy I'm almost afraid to ask it but...How many of you are considering going? How many will consider a very long(MILES) bushwhack..? Here's some more!
-----quote----- Many lakes do'nt see visitors by Stumpy In the BWCA I can think of a few that are not talked about...Caveman Lake or Marble Lake. My map is not in front of me, or I could name more. I've been through Image and Horsefish Lakes (near Marble Lake). The Quetico however, has dozens or even hundreds that do not get talked about. I'm sure dozens that also go decades without visitors. Let's discuss it at the Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005. ..............Crash On...STUMPY Posted on Aug 25, 2002, 7:23 PM Thanks for the stories. Lets hear more....And hears a hint... by Stumpy The Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005 site is ... in Quetico... West of McEwen...where jackpine are blowin' East of Paulene...past waters less seen South yet of Cushing...over ridges we're pushing and still north of Sunday...should make for a fun-day. more to come......................in due time Posted on Sep 8, 2002, 8:49 PM But I'm having fun... by Stumpy I'm having fun remaining anonomous until the Bushwackers Jamboree 2005. Although I've left hints......i.e. Babe Ruth Posted on Oct 9, 2002, 9:39 PM A few tips... by Stumpy Fortunatley I bushwhack better than I type and spell. I don't do proper orienteering but I do use a compass, deadreckoning and common sense. I don't use GPS, however on A bushwhack last summer my companion brought one and traced our route (thats not what got us there). Worst swamp stuck in ? (besides the Portage Bar) Well, define stuck...I'm here are'nt I ? Probably diferent spots along the Dettbarn Creek. We ussually stick to the high ground when possible. Should you give up...? YES Just kidding but I can't answer that for you. I admit I got "turned around" last year while looking for the "old" portage along the creek between the Wawiag River and Belair Lake. My compass was back in a pack and I foolishly veerd to far from the creek. I did'nt pannic and all ended well. When bushwhacking I am more prepared. I allways say that with your camp on your back, you are never lost. You can pitch camp anywhere in Quetico and find some water. So single portaging is a key. I also often have great suport, be it Rangeline, Lake Trout or Son OF Lake Trout. They can all portage like hell and have good sense of direction. Rangeline sniffs out lakes like a dog and I'm not sure I could out portage Lake Trout. Rangeline, L.T. and I honed our portage skills over 20 years ago while working together at an Ely area outfitter. L.T. and I would do "Basswood River Tows". This meant driving customers to the Horse Portage then carrying thier gear over. We would try to impress for tips and then to out-do each other. Eventually we were each carrying 2 food packs and a square-stern NONSTOP. They had to unload us at the end because our arms would not work, and we could'nt tell the boss because he would yell at us. That's over 200 pounds for a mile and I only weighed 165 at the time. I can't do that now but I can still ignore the pain. What I often do is just aim at a lake that is perpendicular to our line (sort of a no-miss) then march. We stop often to check the compass and aim at a yonder spot. We are almost allways ammazed to find ourselves at the very bay or cove we aimed at. I know we are not alone at this (Lake Trout met a guy the other day, who has been to Dettbarn, Swartman and more) that is reason for the Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005. I want to meet these people and hear thier stories and tell mine...Stories you have to earn to here. Hope I helped a bit...RxDx. crash-on Stumpy Posted on Dec 17, 2002, 10:19 PM --------endquote--------- |

Here's the last bit (two posts were still too long for the Machine.)
-----quote----- Bushwackers Jamboree 2005....update... by Stumpy Hi: It's been over two years since my first post on this idea...when I was a little more anonymous, and a little more cocky (at least on this board). Many, thought it was too far off. Now, we are halfway there and less than 2 years away from permit reservations for it. There have been a few critics, but let me say this...It's not a contest. It's not about me. It won't be crowded and it won't be easy. Yes, I'm calling the shots this time. Maybe those who make it there can all call the shots for 2010...The charter members of the BUGBIT club. Here are the basics:: WHO...Whoever can get a permit and get to the location on the date(s) to be named later. WHAT...It will be an informal meeting of tough and hardy travelers, where stories and information will be told. Things that should be earned. WHERE...It will be on a lake near the middle of Quetico, with no name, no portage trail to it (NONE), good depth, good water, plenty of bugs and campable shoreline. WHEN...It will be in mid June 2005 (When bugs are bad and so are voyageurs)...And every 5 years after that, I hope. WHY...Because the best information should be earned. Because I hold back on some stories on this board and I know others do to. Because exploring those no-name lakes makes for great adventure. Because I want to meet other bushwackers and here where they've been and tell them where I've been and exchange great stories. Because I want to shake the hand of anyone who gets there! HOW...Barring any changes in the permit system...I will anounce the exact date and location on this website at .....9:00 PM, DECEMBER 7th, 2004. Thank you Stumpy Posted on Feb 3, 2003, 1:28 AM Want to see a really spooky lake... by Stumpy come to the Bushwhackers Jamboree in 2005..heh heh heh Posted on Apr 9, 2003, 12:06 AM The Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005 is coming... by Stumpy in only twenty months I'll be there, you can bet sitting on a flat shore watching the sun set up past Lake Of Stack Of Rocks a breeze blows in at night scented by the jackpine as water falls to right Posted on Oct 5, 2003, 11:49 PM No, just wondering... by Stumpy The Jamboree will be on a smaller lake, though not too small. Most the bushwhack/no name lakes in the Quetico are smaller...the lake northwest of Turn Lake being one exception...but not the only exception. On my last flight to Clay I took special note and video. It is amazing how many of those little pothole lakes look deep enough to hold fish and look worthy of a visit. I was just watching the video again tonight. THere are so many potential routes out there, if you are willing to cut some gear weight and do a little sweating to get through them.....Oh well, another "off" season full of dreams. Posted on Oct 26, 2003, 9:24 PM Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005... (info. 1 year away) by Stumpy That's right, in 1 year (Dec 7th, 2004), I will anounce the location and dates of the Bushwackers Jamboree. It's been almost 3 years since I started posting info on this topic. Not much of a wait now...just 18 months until the Jamboree. To those of you not familiar with this topic, just do a bulletin board search on "Jamboree" and follow the posts back to Feb. 24, 2001....it's all there. I'll post more info as 2005 draws near.... Come ye bushwhackers, and bring your tales earned of sweat. ................. ...................... .............................. ............. .................. over those eastern ridges, that island is a flower......................................... "A computer is like an Old Testament god, with a lot of rules and no mercy." ~Joseph Campbell ;-)
This machine in general: I know the 5500 character limit is a PITA for trip reports but those with a clue and something worthwhile to offer always find a way. The limit exists to remind folks (like me) about getting long winded and boring. The goal is to save everyone time and bandwidth. The PDB has a built in penalty for brevity wile it's encouraged on these pages. Go figure. One size NEVER fits all. Humdrum, like crotch deep muck are things best avoided when you really want to get somewhere and are determined to pack light. It's Stumpy's call. |

Lovely. We get to portage large quantities of H20 since there will be hardly any fit for human consumption upon our arrival - IF we arrive - at our "destination lake"!!
Oh joy! Oh rapture! :'( It kinda reminds me of the story the Steve McQueen character tells the Mexican bandito leader in the movie "The Magnificent Seven". He recounts how one old boy simply took off all his clothes one day, & then how he proceeds to go jump on & roll around on the thorns of a cactus. When Senor Bandito asks "Why did he do this strange thing?", McQueen quotes the old (naked) boy as saying, "Well... it just seemed to be the right thing to do at the time...". WARNING TO ALL: Stumpy regularly carries around 200 pound Duluth packs, wears an "S" on his chest, and has a certain fondness for cacti. BEWARE!!! Jimbo 8) |

I photographed a hundred plus weddings way back when. One of my favorite 'I'm going to leave soon so you wanna tip me' shots was the one of the father of the bride holding his pockets inside out. Here are the basics::
WHO...Whoever can get a permit and get to the location on June 15-16. See map below. WHEN...It will be nights of June 15-16 (when bugs are bad and so are voyageurs)...And every five years after that...I hope. HOW... (You need to Login or Register |

Well, I figure to beat Old_Salt to the punch by posting something like this five days before HE is likely to. So here goes....
IT IS ONLY 105 DAYS to Stumpy's Bushwhackers Jamboree!!! This strange Quetico "happening" will separate men from boys, bushwhackers from mere portagers, foolhardy from the sensible, chub fishermen from the sport fisherman, mosquitos & black flies from their haunts on the lake to chase the whackies into the Bush, etc. & so on. Those of you who are going EITHER have your permits OR you hope to hook on with other deluded souls who already possess one. Your plan is made & you are committed. Heck, since telling my wife about MY plan to go, she's been tells me everyday that I should be "committed". Anyway, some QJ'ers have, at one time or another, indicated interest in this bizarre event. HOWEVER, I find myself wondering if I should REALLY expect to see ANY other QJ'ers blazing trails to the Chub Pond.... So, after it is all said & done, will any other QJ'er be able to tell the tale? [On the PLUS side, IF the answer is NO, I'll be free to tell whatever the hell kind of tale I choose to]. That presumes, of course, that I will FIND the place to be ABLE to tell the tale. Anyone else out there willing to admit to the Quest? Even now, I fancy I hear the distant call of Pink Flamingos as they settle upon yonder Chub Pond.... Jimbo 8) |

1) Shouldn't this thread be moved to the ''rendevous'' area?? 2) Are you giving away you prized flock of pink flamingos? :o :o 3) Is this a scam to get others to portage your leisure toys? :o 4) Would any fisherman in their right mind go there?? I'll let you answer this one. ;) ;) 5) There are some parts of this planet I don't need to see. :P 6) After last year, bullheads don't fit in my picture. ??? ??? 7) Not everyone has pink flamingos! ::) ::) 8) Yes, there is hope!! ;D ;D ;D |

Bullheads and chubs have their role in the natural world, I would never deny anyone, especially you Stumpy, the sheer joy and ecstasy of reeling in another red bullhead on light tackle-remember who has to carry it! The reel question is lest we digress who will join Stumpy and Jimbo in their mutual quest for happiness and fulfillment in a swamp pond where pink flamingos breed and ''one more red bullhead'' is all they need!! |

Old_Salt,
Referencing your Question #4 ___________________________________________ "Would any fisherman in their right mind go there?" ___________________________________________ There you go, dredging up my wife's argument about having me "committed", again! Well, at the very least, I expect to catch a few fish on the way TO & BACK from Stumpy Land. It doesn't appear that I'll NEED to catch all that many fish, either. My original party of 4-6 has recently dwindled down to two and possibly just one (1), if my college freshman son pulls a certain important Summer Internship down in the Carolinas. A frequent partner, my brother, WAS going but, after careful "Old_Salt-like" reflection, he made the following observation: "WHY the hell do I want to hack my way through a mile of nasty wilderness, boot-sucking swamp, & who-knows-what just to get bitten by bugs while sitting on some desolate beach on some godforsaken lake with a bunch of bullshitting tall tale tellers?" I secretly thought that referring to potential Jamboreers as a "bunch" might be a bit optimistic but I held my tongue. However, I didn't get very far with the response I DID give him: "It would be just like Old Times!" [referring to a 1996 debacle, notorious in our family circles, occurring 'somewhere' a few miles NW of Cache Lake] Brother Gary & his friends are now eyeballing my more sedentary Autumn Base Camp Trip option. Well, the way I look at it, it won't take all that many chubs to mix in with my Cache Lake Fish Chowder Mix to make a fine meal. BTW, that stuff is great!! Let the faint of heart vegetate on their sofas! Seize the day & the Flamingos!! I say 'on with the Quest' and those fabulous 'door prizes'!!! Jimbo 8) |

Maybe the REAL question is: WHO does everybody know??? Is it Stumpy?? Did they just let him out of prison? Is he a known practitioner of Voodoo or something similar? You know, there just might be a decent story on the other end of this bizarre expedition yet! Tune in around late June & learn the REST OF THE STORY.... ******************************************** JUST 104 DAYS REMAINING UNTIL BUSHWHACKER'S JAMBOREE AND THOSE FABULOUS DOOR PRIZES!! There, I've admitted it, and that's the first step towards recovery. Now, where's the coffee and donuts? I've alluded to it in other places, but here's the official committment - we'll be there. Caked in muck (which helps with the itching bug bites), shredded to pieces, bewildered, and hungry for bullhead stew. Six of us, bringing the total # of crazy people on Chub pond to ?? (not counting the flamingos). So, who else will commit? Or is it best not to, that way when you've lost your second pair of boots in the muck, you can back out without losing face? ;) |

Stumpy,
Don't fret so much about Jamboree PR. You're getting TOO excited over that unfamiliar word I used. Calm down. Count to ten. Check your dictionary. The word I used is spelled "h-o-r-d-e-s". I suspect YOU were thinking about another word that sounds much the same as my word BUT it is spelled a little differently, with a silent "w" at its beginning. It also means something quite different. It means "women of ill repute". "Hordes of bushwhackers" is one thing. On the other hand, what YOU were thinking of might make for an altogether different type of Jamboree. I am sorry I got you SO confused, excited, and worked into a lather. Perhaps you understand a little better now why dictionary skills are so important to us all? So let's forget about that OTHER KIND of Jamboree. Save the thought for 2010, ok? Concentrate, stay focused, & keep THIS Jamboree a clean, wholesome, family-oriented event. Alright? JUST 99 DAYS TO A WHOLESOME FAMILY EXPERIENCE AND THOSE FABULOUS DOOR PRIZES!!! COME ONE!! Bruce,
THIS year I go into the Park loaded for bear (that's "figurative speech" ONLY, for all of you "animal rights activist" QJ'ers). Santa Claus brought Jimbo a really neat digital binocular camera so he can document whatever unusual life forms (pink, etc.) he might come across around the Chub Pond. Surely, despite my techno-ignorance, even I can figure a way to post those pics to my Jamboree Trip Report. Also, I don't really know if Stu at the Boundary Waters Journal will want to give the event its PROPER coverage, but I may well invest in some "slide film" for that eventuality, just in case I choose to do a story & submit. Slide film is the only kind of picture he'll accept. Anyway, Bruce, there SHOULD be plenty of documentation & pictures, autographed & otherwise. I have ALSO invested in a Garmin 60C which I hope gives me better odds on actually FINDING this chub hole. As for "Jimboree", well, it WILL take place as previously announced... in the chub hole due north of Stumpy's chub hole-in-the-wall. I'll be passing through that so-called "body of water" to get to his paradise anyway (any fool can see that bushwhackers will need to drop down from the north versus wading through the Cairn Lake Swamp on Skeeterville Creek!). En route, I intend to set up a "shrine" on the beach of that chub hole & dedicate it to Old_Salt. Too bad he won't be around for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Next... C-Dub, Re: Flick & George...when has YB (or anyone else around here, for that matter) EVER let the facts get in the way of a good story?!? HEY, JUST 97.5 DAYS/JOURS LEFT UNTIL WHOLESOME FAMILY FUN, FABULOUS DOOR PRIZES, AND JAMBOREE!!! STAY TUNED!!! Jimbo 8) |

YB & C-Dub,
I used to listen to Jean Shepherd on the radio just about every night, particularly in the summertime, as I was camped outside my house when I was a young teenager (yes, I lived in a tent outside my NJ home for a year or two... but that's ANOTHER story). That guy was a helluva good storyteller. Ralphie's Christmas adventure barely touches the surface of Jean's good stuff. Someday I'll invest some energies & find some old recordings of his. He & Seinfeld may have some similarities, but for my money Jean Shepherd has the much richer stuff, IMHO. Anyhow, for what it's worth, WE'LL BE BABBLING ON ABOUT THESE & OTHER POINTLESS VOYAGEUR STORIES OF INTEREST BETWEEN SIPS AT BUSHWHACKER'S JAMBOREE, NOW LESS THAN 97.5 DAYS/JOURS AWAY!! Jimbo 8) PS. Will they be the door prizes? ::) Just trying to find out what kind of company we will be with at the jamboree.

I don't want to reveal too much, or tell folk how to go but be forwarned about the water of that lake, for it seemed a bit stagnant (like Old Salts rear end, come June 15th). At the end of a long sweaty bushwhack, I often plunge right into the water. I'm not sure if I'd do that on "Jimbo" lake. Had that water been better, I'd have picked that as the Rendezvous (me speakum Frog too) location, as you will see a great gathering spot on that lake. Where as Chub pond, seemed deep and clear, with frolicking otters and pink.... |

Magic -
Glad to hear you might be attending this gathering of the brethren! For that matter, I was also glad to learn about Pghportager & the half-dozen suckers - er, bushwhackers - that HE will be conning into this hootenannie, too. Ok. HoHo has the pink flamingo thing figured out... almost. At one point or another on this or that thread, we got to talking about "missing items" around the USA that might mysteriously re-appear up in Stumpy's marshlands. Numerous such items were mentioned. I simply observed something about "reports of Pink Flamingos" being stolen from "this neck of the woods". A notorious instigator/troublemaker - either Old_Salt or YB or someone of similar ilk - THEN came out quoting me & adding some kind of crack like: "Neck of woods = Jimbo's back yard". Since then, everybody & his brother has put me on a great safari to retrieve Minnesota's lost Pink Flamingo Flock, allegedly belonging to me & currently roosting somewhere near the Chub Pond. Anywho, that's a loose derivation of this particular pointless "legend". The Old_Salt Shrine, to be constructed up on Jimboree Lake, equally pointless, shall honor his holy quest in some simple(minded) manner, not yet disclosed to the general public (probably because I haven't entirely thunk it up yet). However, now that I AM thinking, I'm thinking Message Cairns & Olive Jars. [Yeah, that's the ticket! Message cairn!] THINK FAMILY-ORIENTED FUN & JAMBOREE (WHICH, BY THE WAY, IS ONLY 97.25 DAYS AWAY)! COME ONE, COME ALL, OR... SIMPLY SEND ME SOME MESSAGES TO BE TUCKED AWAY IN THE (northern) CHUB POND MESSAGE CAIRN FOR ALL POSTERITY TO SEE! SAY WHAT YOU WANT ABOUT OLD_SALT OR STUMPY, WE WON'T CARE! Stumpy and Jimbo, have you looked into this? I think a live feed into the QJ website would be nice, so we can cheer on our favorite voyaguers. You may want to provide jerseys or uniforms so we can readily identify the teams. You guys will certainly want to bring your wireless laptops so we can all share the experience in our bugfree zones. Bruce,
PJ welcomed me to a "regional" QJ chapter meeting nearly two years ago with a bagpipe solo serenade. It was as fine a performance as anyone in the North Country could ever hope to hear. The man is a true professional & artist with the pipes. Sure, I give him a lot of crap about the occasional pig-strangling sound qualities of those pipes in general (in the hands of an amateur) AND of their serving double-duty providing a "sonic cone of protection" against bears, bugs, & such. Nevertheless, I fairly often DO think about something PJ posted, many moons ago. In that post, PJ set up an intriguing Quetico fantasy scene at twilight. He asked us to imagine the somber, wavering chords of "Amazing Grace", reverberating across the waters in evening stillness as the sun went down. IMHO, there could be no more fitting way to end a first day of Jamboree than to hear him play that tune. In fact, I hope my kids hire the guy to do JUST THAT when they scatter my ashes over Cirrus Lake (somewhere west of the birch bark beetle "infestation" area, of course). They would be doing us BOTH a big favor. PJ has always DREAMED of writing off Quetico as a "business trip".... Jimbo 8) |

Please note the following dress code restrictions: No cut-offs or tank tops. Note in addition that water hazards come into play on four holes, and that the location was carved out of woodland & is surrounded by water. See the links for further details.

Alas! Rampant commercialism runs amuck even with such an altruistic wilderness adventure as Jamboree! Clearly Stumpy is prospecting for a 2nd Robert Trent Jones golf course to add to his "chain"... in this case, an unusual tourist trap catering to that very special/curious golfer who likes to hit it from the rough & "get away from it all". This is terribly disappointing. :'( Such a sad revelation for B.U.G.B.I.T. enthusiasts who planned to flock (does a dozen make a flock?) just west of Kawnipi Lake in June! Such a serious letdown! :'(
So - now that Jamboree is exposed for a blatant capitalistic for-profit, shameless, materialist enterprise - WHERE can we spirited voyageurs place our faith? Certainly NOT with the man in the blue leotards, red cape, and sporting a big "S" emblazoned on his chest!! ??? Certainly NOT in Jamboree.... Forsooth, WHERE shall we go? :-[ WHAT shall we do??? :-/ CONSIDER BUSHWHACKERS JIMBOREEE!! :D INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, JIMBOREE OFFERS SIMILAR TERRAIN, AVAILABILITY DATES, FISHING & CAMPING OPPORTUNITIES, AS WELL AS FORMER ACTIVITIES OF THE NOW DEFUNCT "JAMBOREE" (although our Activities Committee has suspended the Weenie Roast thing, pending "safety review")!! Old_Salt,
Speaking of radios, I've actually been thinking about whether or not I will "turn on" my radio at the Chub Pond. Generally I enjoy listening to the "voice of the great Canadian Northwest" on CBC as I fix the evening meal. Nowhere else do I ever hear such a unique assortment of odd-duck programming & music with a pure northern flavor. Also, there's always the remote chance I might learn something about the weather on those rare occasions when the announcer says something other than "sun & cloud expected today". THAT "forecast" covers all contingencies but it does so without telling the listener much of anything. Every once in awhile, however, they WILL mention something about a monster blow coming through (after a "period of sun & cloud"). It certainly helped me prepare for some 70mph winds about 3 years ago! The real issue for me concerns park/backwoods ethics and respect for the other campers. I WILL have my radio with me AND playing it when I am on the more remote lakes where there are NO other campers about. However, chances are I won't even turn it on at the Chub Pond... unless I'm comfortable that other B.U.G.B.I.T. members are generally "OK with that". Many folks go to the woods to get away from radios & such. Sometimes I am very much one of those folks! In any case, I don't think I can pick up the Chicago station. It'll be the CBC or nothing... in English, French, & Ojibwe, depending upon the time of day. Jimbo 8) |

Some say that you haven't really "heard" rap until you've heard it in Ojibwe. Which gives me yet ANOTHER great idea for our kilted campfire competitive games... something we'll call: "Voyageur Rap!" Let me experiment with a few promising Chub Pond stanzas: "Da bugs was bad, Dey made me mad, My boy, he say 'dis party So Sad!' I grabbed da Deet to spray ma feet, now my ankles & toes dose ticks won't eat! My boy go fishin' & I fine him wishin' dat he brought his gig for a frog hunt mission! Ma tent pad lumpy, Make me feel so dumpy, Wants to kill dat boy who be calling himself "Stumpy"! SO COME ONE, COME ALL! YOU BE HEARING MY CALL!! YOU BE JOINING MY SON & HIS B.U.G.B.I.T. PAW! *********************************** Can anyone out there help me with an Ojibwe translation of this? We're considering a "live feed" into Canadian radio & "the voice of the Great Northwest". I can handle the translation into French, myself. Those Canadians really get into cultural stuff like this.... Jimbo 8) |

Stumpy, camping is like life.
You can't pick your neighbors. Of more use to me, Than a kevlar screen, Is a soundproof tent. That's where the big bucks are. If Stumpy and Jimbo tell jokes, and no one hears them, did they make a sound? We've got to get this act marketed somehow. They may not be Red Green, But they are Blue Yellow. |

After much thoughtful reflection, a further maturing of spirit, a yearning to "move on" with my creative development, much hate mail, and three headless pink flamingoes appearing at my door step (Old Salt, how did you get my address???), I have decided to move forward into my "post-Voyageur Rap" era of expression. Besides, "Voyageur Rap" is so, so, so... "yesterday". And, as we all know, Jamboree is more about the possibilities of tomorrow. Or, to be more precise:
55 DAYS FROM TOMORROW, WHEN THE LOST FLOCK SHALL QUIETLY GATHER IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHERE TO LISTEN TO A WHITE SOX STATION ON THE RADIO THAT CAN'T BE HEARD ANYWAY & TALK & JOKE ABOUT NOTHING THAT IS GOING TO BE AUDIBLE THROUGH THE SOUNDPROOFING IN THE KEVLAR-SCREENED TENTS. OS,
I figured you were leaving me an offer I couldn't refuse. In fact, I'm surprised I didn't wake up screaming to find the headless flamingo lying beside me in bed when I woke up in the morning... a shocking bloodless, plastic mess. That's OK. I take the hint. Ultimately, I believe "Voyageur Rap" simply appeared before "its time". Perhaps Jamboree will serve as a kind of "cultural festival"... an incubator for like-minded artistes. From that fertile birthplace, the movement may spread first to coffee houses & small bait shops along the border around the Rainy River. From there? Who knows.... Anyway, guess what? IT'S ONLY 52 DAYS, ETC. & SO ON.... Jimbo 8) |

Jimbo, don't confuse me with your other ''friends''. ;)
It was HoHo who said he liked pre-rap Jimbo better. It was Stumpy who sent you the headless phlamingos. I'm sure he intended it as a warning, since you ''fowled'' his intended intimate gathering with wild promises of ''door prizes'', and furthur threatened everyone with singing and jokes. Sir Stump has his own agenda (sordid stories to tell). Now he's wondering if he'll get an edge in wordwise, if you show. My sage advice, my friend, is to back off, and let whatever happens (nothing much) happen. My reference to the soundproof tent must have been misunderstood. ;D ;DIt was simply to protect other campers (and wildlife) from my snoring. Ask Snowdog if you doubt this. 8) 8) |

OS -
Thanks for the encouragement re: Voyageur Rap. I'll be sure to send you an autographed copy of my first CD... which should be available for the rest of the listening public late this Summer in bait shops everywhere along the fringes of known civilization... in the far, far North. You know, I guess I needed a healthy helping of your "sensitivity advice" re: stealing Stumpy's Jamboree thunder. Your kind words of wisdom AND those headless pink flamingoes from whomever are gentle reminders that even we HR/PR professionals can sometimes grow cynical & callous & cold. Old Salt, you have touched me. I am now definitely inclined to re-consider on the general location of the "Old Salt Memorial Shrine". Last week I was about persuaded to change its title from "Shrine" to "Throne" and then to locate it about: 60 yards behind camp, down wind, under about 6 inches of soil, and -almost always - under a Full Moon. However, I have heard the Call of Another Nature this week and, consequently, have had a change of heart. It tells me that I have rushed to judgment & that you are right. I have misunderstood you. I beg your forgiveness... and that of Stumpy (currently - or very soon - up in the cold, wet North Woods fishing for Lake Trout). Also, I have about made up my mind about "the Shrine". It seems only fitting that your shrine should take the form of a special wildlife preserve within the park, where fishing/hunting by humans for exotic species like chubs & rare Kawnipi Three-Eyed Toads, etc., shall be prohibited. Anyhow, my vision is an exciting one & it is still taking shape. I'll be sure to take good pics. Jimbo 8) |

I would truly be devastated to hear that news... as would be the rest of us... Or (on a bright note) are you preparing the way for a new song career???? singing ballads about voyagers... (just a thought) or was it possibly just a mis-use of a word generally associated with shrines... Oh, yeah that rap was very catchy... next you might try a ballad... how about to the tune of "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitgerald" where it gets stuck in your head and doesn't go away.... oh well, just some random thoughts and ideas...

Geez, good catch! Here I've been using the word "memorial" and all the while I've meant "memorable"... as in "thanks for the memories, Old Salt". Yeah - that's the ticket - "The Memorable Old Salt Shrine", as in "Old Salt is such a memorable guy". QJ World w/o Old Salt would be just as bad as QJ World w/o PJ... and that scare was bad enough back on April 1st. They are the Ying & the Yang of QJ; they give us our "balance". And where would QJ be w/o our Ying Yangs? It's a scary thought. So I say it is better to commemorate/remember them while they are still with us. Ballads, you say? Hmmm... I'll need more inspiration. I'll have to give that notion some consideration during my long drive to/from work this week. You see, THAT's when my Muse kicks in, when I'm driving. I promise that the "Memorable Old Salt Shrine" WILL be worthy! Jimbo 8) |

Knowing OS as well as I do, I would say the original idea for an Old Salt Memorial (Memorable??) Throne was right on target. We always carry a portable OSMT with us on our trips which has spawned many smiles (and many wisecracks) by those trippers who end up on portage trails with us. It seems only fitting that a more permanent OSMT be constructed in such a remote location where OS can one day aspire to travel and get the solitude his long periods of musing truly deserve. Just remember: if you detect the odor of onion you are getting too close!!

okay, okay, okay... the desire for honesty ;) ;) has driven me to admit... that it may not have been OS who was sawing those proverbial logs at that camp on the egde of Lake Four, on the way back from Hudson, those many years ago... It may have been another member of that fateful trip who was providing the sound effects that awoke me in the midnight hour and serenaded my ears with the sounds of distant rumblings, snorts, and other various sounds... that kept me awake for a while (although, I have to say it was the first snoring I heard the whole trip...) However, I will... when Jimbo has the OSMT established gladly go to where ever it is and pay homage to that dutiful throne... with or without sound effects... ;D ;D ;D Keep the humor flowing guys...
And I have another thought... perhaps as a tribute to the board we could arrange as a Grand Door Prize from the Jimboree/Jamboree a canoeing trip with the famous voyagers Old_salt, Jimbo, Snow_dog and Stumpy... Imagine the knowledge you could gain from that trip :o :o ;D ;D And Jimbo could and probably would create a song to commemorate the occasion.... Bruce |

Bruce & All -
You may have to bear with my fledgling efforts as I attempt to convert & refine my presentation style from "Voyageur Rap" to "Ballads". I took a crack at it on my long trek to work this morning & ended up somewhere "in the middle", in the "limerick" neighborhood... I think. Anyway, here goes: *************************************** THE BALLAD OF BUSHWHACKER BILL T'is the ballad of Bushwhacker Bill Who wandered the Woods for a thrill But, oh, what a mess! When that damned GPS Conked out with the batteries killed! He had aimed for "the Pond" in the Park Which he sought on a Jamboree lark, Following old Stumpy's vision, Suffering laughs and derision, From those CERTAIN that he'd "miss his mark". So he banged through the brush in a daze His Wits worried him well into Craze. Through the thorns and the mud He shed pounds, sweat, & blood Wading swamps in a wilderness maze! But Bushwhacker Bill... he had grit. Plus he thought of the PRIZES he'd get IF he would just persevere And just carry that gear! But... oh no!! Now poor Bill had to sh_t!!! Old Bill he did grunt and did groan He did pant, he did shriek, he did moan!! He seemed shit-outta luck, When through Bushwhacker pluck, Stumbled on Old Salt's Memorial Throne! So Bill cried aloud with his glee As he hosed that there shrine with his pee When old Stumpy came 'round To see what's going down And got whizzed on the side of his knee! So Stumpy dried off but was damp. Cussed his luck & his boots he did stamp. But soon "party" was on And it lasted til Dawn At Stumpy's Rendezvous Bushwhacker camp! ************************************* WITH ONLY 49 DAYS TO HEAVEN, TODAY'S INAUGURAL BUSHWHACKER BALLADEERING WAS BROUGHT TO YOU BY: Jimbo 8) |

Jimbo, I think if your lead character in your ballad is named "Bushwacker Bill" you should try to come up with something to the tune of "Bungalow Bill" by the Beatles. Just a humble suggestion from (or for?) the lyrically impaired...
...and Stumpy, I wish you luck. You will be facing the singing, arm-wrestling, racing, flamingo-toting, shrine-building Jimbo along with the "32 flavors and then some" of Kawishaway. I just have to believe this is not quite what you had in mind when you hatched this idea. Of course you could just pair them off and Jimbo can come up with 32 different activities to keep the 32 personalities of K occupied! Someone just HAS to bring a video camera to this shindig! I know I'd pay almost anything to see a highlight film. |

Snow_Dog,
No doubt ANY humble suggestion would improve the above contribution to the infant(ile?) branch of music known as Bushwhacker Balladeering. I welcome all recommendations & thoughts. I'm pleased to report the volume of hate mail for "Bushwhacker Balladeering" is not quite as high as that I received for "Voyageur Rap". Alas, our prophet, poor Stumpy, is "suffering" up there in the cold, wet Park right now. And, yes... I know, "he's far better THERE than to be down HERE suffering Bushwhacker Balladeering & Voyager Rap". Regardless, the Master - Stumpy - is NOT currently in a position to confirm your conjecture re: his disciples not falling in line with his holy vision. Shame be upon us, his humble servants, if our actions serve to thwart his will. Stumpy be praised! Hallelujah! Now, as for my singing... nada, never, not a good thing. "Songwriter", well... fan mail is running "iffy" on that referendum just now. Arm wrestling? Unhappily, I was humbled to a near stand-still by my sixteen year-old last week. I officially withdraw from the Jamboree competition. Race? Hey, I am an HR guy. I operate w/o respect to race, etc.. Flamingo-toting? In keeping w/Quetico wildlife regs, I will NOT tote any flamingo out of the Park. However, IF they are domesticated and truly belong in my home neighborhood, I cannot be held responsible if the FOLLOW me home, overhead. Shrine-building? Nah, I'm going to run with the Wildlife Preserve idea... it's more natural. We'll corral a few of the exotic species & take photos of the dedication ceremony. Now, as for your last wish... shindig highlight (low light?) films. This wish MAY be granted, IF that be the will of our prophet. And, NO, Jimbo Music Enterprises does not now venture into OR ever expect to venture into Voyageur Rap or Bushwhacker Balladeering choreography work {just a pre-emptory note to stop, in advance, inevitable future hate mail before it even gets started}. Anyhow, THAT's today's news. 48 DAYS.... Jimbo 8) |

;D ;D ;D [/quote] Dear Stumpy: After all the pre-trip ballyhoo is said & done (& I freely admit manufacturing a "tad bit" of that, myself), and we actually launch our SR17 southward out of Stanton Bay, I intend to embrace your original vision. We hope to shake a few hands and swap a few stories. THEN, my son & I will be heading off to our own separate pursuits elsewhere in the Park. My oldest boy is in college these days & I don't get to see him so much, anymore. We're taking this on as a joint challenge (for "bragging rights", as db recently suggested to me), hoping to have some fun, and then - much later - be in a position to share a few memories when the paddling & portaging doesn't come so easy to me, anymore. In that respect, I guess, we're probably much the same as anyone else who actually attempts the Bushwhack. Heck, I'm already hoping to do it AGAIN in five years time. Of course, my friend, let's see if I'm still talking THAT way at the end of June '05! Stumpy, I am most grateful that you have conceived & put this "event" out there. All of us need "something" to feel energetic about. I think it's pretty darn neat that so many like-minded folks have picked this same "something" to be excited about, regardless of whether or not they actually attend. For Pete's Sake, there will be well over 10,000 hits on this thread by the time it is all said & done!! Can you believe it?? Even if my party never finds Stumpy Pond, you have already given my boy & I that "something-to-get-excited-about" for THIS year. We ARE having lots of fun with it & look forward to meeting a few other folks feeling much the same way. I have no expectations of anyone EXCEPT myself for this event. I seek a feeling of accomplishment as well as some fun for my boy & myself. In that sense I suppose, the selfish pleasure I/we call "Jamboree" really IS all about me. Thanks, again... Jimbo 8) |

From "Canoe Country Wilderness" by William N. Rom
page 72 "Old guide and mentor Gus Walske always talked about a superb bass lake along these western reaches of Kawnipi but never dropped any hints as to which lake it was. I found one lake on the map, west of Kawnipi, that was narrow and a mile long that could have been it. I tried hiking in to this lake, but after several beaver ponds, I decided that it was too far and not worth the bushwhack with a heavy canoe. Thus, Gus Walske's bass hole in the haunts of Kawnipi remains undiscovered." Would Bill Rom Jr. ever show at this event, if he knew about it ? |

Stumpy...
I could always fill the void with some more Voyageur Rap, if you'd like. Just give me the word! The final QJ tally had VR running about "even" in popularity with Bushwhacker Balladeering (ie. most thought they both "sucked"). Hey, in what size would you prefer your Fabulous Door Prize? Tall or Short??? I'm afraid I'm already completely out of Mediums. I tried but they were virtually impossible to come by. Also, I will require your assistance with Jamboree ceremonies commemorating the Old Salt Wildlife Preserve... unless, of course, I opt to go with the Shrine idea. You see, I still have to get an official "weighing" of that old toilet seat up in my attic. Unfortunately, I'm thinking the nasty old thing is likely to weigh in MUCH heavier than props for my Wildlife Preserve idea. The way I see it, every ounce is going to count on that Bushwhack. Benjimo & I are travelling bare-bones.... Jimbo 8) |

Jimbrewie,
Just Give Stumps a commemorative version of the birds in my yard. Light weight plastic to represent our friend QP. Blue with a large bottom and feathers to represent Woods Walker. Skinny legs to represent me. Just a thought, only a thought…. I’d rather be sky diving. Hold that thought. k |

Stumpy... You got it, Chief! I think I'll be opting for one of those, too.
WW & K... FYI, the Bushwhacker Jamboree "Wrastlin' Championship" will be taking place immediately AFTER the Kilted Games firewalking competition/"weenie roast" over on the east shore of the pond just north of Jamboree. We can pair you two off in the First Round, if you'd like, winner to move on. BTW, our famed weenie roast is a time-tested, sure-fire method of getting our male combatants into the right mood for true combat. It would seem that you guys may not require the usual amount of time hovering over the coals, though. SO.... COME ONE, COME ALL!! JUST 17 DAYS UNTIL ROUND ONE OF THE BUSHWHACKER JAMBOREE WRASTLIN' COMPETITION! THERE, WE WILL SEE EITHER: BLUE TAIL FEATHERS BEING PLUCKED - OR - CHICKEN LEGS BEING SPLAYED IN WISHBONE FASHION!! SO... PLACE YOUR BETS NOW & PLAN TO CATCH THE WILD ACTION LATER ON VIDEO CLIPS TO BE MADE AVAILABLE TO YOU ONLY ON QJ!! * Jimbo 8) __________________________________________________ * This unbelievable offer will necessarily be "Inukshuk access ONLY" due to the production costs. So, if you don't wish to miss this once-in-a-lifetime Round One battle of the titans, reach into your pocket & become an Inukshuk today!! |

Ah ha !! I knew it was to good to last...So the commercialization of the BWR 2005 has finally come ? !!! Well, we might as well let in all the corporate sponsors now. Maybe we could get some $$$ if we name the location "US Cellular Lake" or something. Heck we'll just split the proceeds with the Ontario government. In fact they may wish to sell off nameing rights to all their lakes, to take pressure off their over taxed citizens. McDougall Lake could become McDonalds Lake...McIntyre could become Mitsubishi Lake...Conk would be Coca Cola and Poohbah would be Pepsi....the profit and possibilities are endless ! BWR 2005 be damned....let every D. B. Norton in the door....Not even Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck can stop us now !!!!!!! ...and oh,....I'll turn over my Inukshuk money at the Rendezvous and Jimbo or someone can pass it along. ::) |

Ok, ok, ok!
How about if we donate proceeds from the sale of our video clips to Park conservation efforts? Maybe to the "Friends of Quetico"? This featured "grudge match" between The Blue Bomber & Chicken Little is bound to be a popular collectors' item. Seems to me that some worthwhile cause should benefit from the proceeds. BTW, right now the betting line on this particular match is running pretty danged lop-sided in favor of The Blue Bomber. There IS one persistent question that keeps popping up, however. It may very well impact the ultimate betting line.... Stumpy, you may be the only one able to answer this question: Just how much of that Chub Pond shoreline is "runnable"??? In other words, is there some sheer rock face OR some other barrier that cannot be climbed somewhere along its perimeter? Think carefully & try to remember. It's important. Several folks have said they might switch their bets over to Chicken Little IF the ENTIRE shoreline can be run. Anyway... JUST 16 MORE DAYS AND THE CIRCUS ROLLS INTO THE OLD CHUB POND!! COME ONE! COME ALL! WITNESS THE SPECTACLE! AND BE SURE TO PLACE YOUR BETS EARLY; THIS QJ BETTING WINDOW CLOSES AS SOON AS STUMPY DISCLOSES THE NATURE OF THE SURROUNDING SHORELINE!! Jimbo 8) |

There is a spot on the eastern shore of that one thats big enough for a small concert, but the water on that pond/lake is icky..... Come to WOODSWALKER STOCK just avoid the brown water dude.... :P |

Jimbo you know the actual event ("grudge match" between The Blue Bomber & Chicken Little ) I figure likely will take place long before the arrival of the qp boys at the BWR 2005. Want to meet up early Jimbo? We'll (I'll) hide in the woods and record the event. ;D
Those skinny legged guys can run really fast you know. Would that make K the winner? Would that match be a heavy weight, lightweight or Flamingo wieght class? Hey K!!! Hint for ya, shave your legs, I think WW would have a har deer time holding on to ya. :o Bear repellant might help to, I've actually seen both of you guys and size does matter in the Bushwhacker Jamboree "Wrastlin' Championship" Ok enough of this, time to call my bookie ::) qp |

If I'm reading between the lines correctly on Stumpy's post you better change that order to "well-done" or even "burnt beyond recognition". Do a search on "cormorant" and you should come up with some suitable recipes for the steak Stumpy has in mind. |

OK, so it is noted, I'm perhaps fearful of WW. He is kinda Bear sized in comparison to me. Though, so far, Stumpy, and you, QP, are nothing but talk. But what do I know. I'm just some guy that has been lost a time or two or three with a woman that does'nt hit five foot dry, and then lost again with a dog that does'nt hit 13".
I'm looking forward to the trip, and putting aside bragging rites of who uses the best form of tanning bed. To me the BWJ is yet another remarkable wrinkle in time. Have I selected good guides? :-X |

As promised, I'll be offering a few tips....starting now....
You folk may have better ideas, but these are some things I do while bushwhacking.... 1.Always stay within hearing distance of the guy/gal with canoe on head...they won't hear you but you can hear them. Stay together !!! 2. Everyone should have a compass and take readings at each break. You GPS folk...more power to you. 3. Stop often and pick your route well. Depending on terrain and trees, this may mean 100 yards or 30 feet. 4. Allow lots of time, and don't rush. 5. One trip it !....cut weight, stop often, do what you must but I think one tripping it is the only way to go. You are NEVER lost if your camp is on your back...Home is where you stop. 6. Let the canoe carrier set the pace and the stops. more to com... |

Woods,
We'll be east of Atikokan on Thursday night, preparing to enter the Park the next morning. I guess we'll catch up with you six days later, in the middle. We'll monitor Channel One on the walkie-talkie on Tuesday evening, every hour on the hour. If we don't see you pre-bushwhack on Wednesday morning, we'll see you on the inside... I hope. My son is the slender figure in the wide-brimmed, green Costa Rican "Imperial" beer hat. I'm the wider, taller, gray-whiskered guy in the Filson vest and Columbia River hat. The gold SR17 will either be under me or over me. Travel safely. Jimbo 8) |

Woods,
Let's hope we have better luck THIS time than I had on that first trip, 15 years ago. Towing solo canoes packed with gear, dodging lightning bolts, and fending off marauding parties of Fishers attacking our campsite was a bit much for one trip! One of these days I'll get around to posting the written account to the QJ "Stories" board. If nothing else, our 1st trip experience would offer encouragement to other Park newbies. They would have to try REAL hard to mess up as much as I did! We screwed up, we survived, & we keep coming back. Hey, Woods, let's hope we "bushwhackers" can say as much AFTER the Jamboree.... Later (I hope), Jimbo 8) |

Woods, we gotta FIND the pink you-know-what's first.
Stumpy, what is your best advice regarding hoisting oneself out of quick sand? I understand from QP that HIS intended bushwhack route features THAT sort of thing. Any words to the wise (other than "wait for the 2010 Jamboree")? Presently, all I know to do is to offer QP some kindly words of encouragement from afar over the walkie-talkie as he is going down. I figure Woods will get through OK using that route. If HE gets into such a predicament, I expect he will just stand on Kawishiway's shoulders.... Later (maybe MUCH later), Jimbo 8) |
