In the BWCA I can think of a few that are not talked about...Caveman Lake or Marble Lake. My map is not in front of me, or I could name more. I've been through Image and Horsefish Lakes (near Marble Lake).
The Quetico however, has dozens or even hundreds that do not get talked about. I'm sure dozens that also go decades without visitors. Let's discuss it at the Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005.

A few tips...

Fortunatley I bushwhack better than I type and spell.
I don't do proper orienteering but I do use a compass, deadreckoning and common sense. I don't use GPS, however on A bushwhack last summer my companion brought one and traced our route (thats not what got us there).

Probably diferent spots along the Dettbarn Creek. We ussually stick to the high ground when possible.
Should you give up...? YES
Just kidding but I can't answer that for you. I admit I got "turned around" last year while looking for the "old" portage along the creek between the Wawiag River and Belair Lake. My compass was back in a pack and I foolishly veerd to far from the creek. I did'nt pannic and all ended well.
When bushwhacking I am more prepared. I allways say that with your camp on your back, you are never lost. You can pitch camp anywhere in Quetico and find some water.
So single portaging is a key.
I also often have great suport, be it Rangeline, Lake Trout or Son OF Lake Trout. They can all portage like hell and have good sense of direction.
Rangeline sniffs out lakes like a dog and I'm not sure I could out portage Lake Trout. Rangeline, L.T. and I honed our portage skills over 20 years ago while working together at an Ely area outfitter. L.T. and I would do "Basswood River Tows". This meant driving customers to the Horse Portage then carrying thier gear over. We would try to impress for tips and then to out-do each other. Eventually we were each carrying 2 food packs and a square-stern NONSTOP. They had to unload us at the end because our arms would not work,and we could'nt tell the boss because he would yell at us.
That's over 200 pounds for a mile and I only weighed 165 at the time.
I can't do that now but I can still ignore the pain.
What I often do is just aim at a lake that is perpendicular to our line (sort of a no-miss) then march. We stop often to check the compass and aim at a yonder spot. We are almost allways ammazed to find ourselves at the very bay or cove we aimed at.
I know we are not alone at this (Lake Trout met a guy the other day, who has been to Dettbarn, Swartman and more) that is reason for the Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005. I want to meet these people and hear thier stories and tell mine...Stories you have to earn to here.
