Title: Oconomowoc River
Post by Kingfisher on Apr 5th, 2005 at 4:39am
Woke up those tired old paddling muscles on Sunday with a tandem paddle with my wife on the Oconomowoc River from Monches to Lowes Lake and beyond. Weather was perfect. Lake is 2/3 free of ice. Many unusual migrating ducks on the lake and ice resting up including a loon (very rare for these parts). Also saw deer, turkeys, hawk and vultures. Huge hatch of harmless gnat like bugs above the marshes.

Kingfisher,

I grew up on North Lake and know the Oconomowoc well...but from the inlet in the little lake to Okauchee. That's a nice float too.

You probably heard that the DNR has secured a boat launch site on North.

When I lived there I would have opposed it ...but now as a much wiser individual (and one who no longer has access to the lake) I am all for it and look forward to once again angling on this great fishery.

I too am happy about the approved launch on North. I'm hopeful it will relieve some of the pressure from my beloved Pine Lake next door ;)

Solo paddled another section of the Oconomowoc river from HWY 167 down to Friess Lake, Little Friess and beyond. Had trouble finding a comfortable position in my 17' 9" Sawyer Cruiser but I'm working on that. She seems especially "tender" unloaded. Took a couple small spinners to look for crappies and caught 4 northerns and a bass instead. Beautiful day.
Geese on the nests and also saw a loon on the lake.
