I'm coming into Ely Saturday afternoon/evening (july 2).  It would be fun to meet up for a while if you feel like it...

David and I will be in the area most of the time July 1 to July 10.  Night of July 9 (Saturday) would be especially good time because we will get back from a very short canoe trip that day.

I'll be around July 2 - the 10th.  I believe you know where to find me on the weekends.  Sunday morning through midday Friday I'll be in the woods.  Be sure to ask the pretty brunettes at the front desk or the long haired guy with glasses my where abouts... or the short cocky red head kid...lol he has more stuff stashed in the woods than you may have..all 19 years of him.  Better days are ahead.  Set up a plan.. I'll do what I can to attend.  Or you can look for me in route from Kawishiwi Lake to Little Sag... ha ha.. naw..Ely works fine.  Pink may have to tag along just for the hell of it.

I'll drive over to visit too, if you guys set a time and place.  Just an hour's drive for me from home...IC

I'll be in the "portage" race in Whiteside Park at 10:30 AM on the 4th of July....look for the crazed red head...I'll try to wear a black tee shirt.
My race partner will have dark brown hair and a "Kirk Douglas" cleft in his chin.....talk about ugly !

Other than that....just look for a green plymouth minivan with a "SOX" sticker and a real wood rear bumper.

Hey all, I missed a bunch of these messages 'cause I was already on my way to Ely and didn't have internet access for 10 days or so.  Sorry I missed folks.  Stumpy, I've never seen the portage races . . . can you describe?  And how did you guys do?

FYI all.  A friend in Ely has shared that anyone can access the net from Ely at the "Surf Shop"... near the ol Echo Newspaper office.  There is this new place called the "Front Porch" with the same no charge net access.   Now you know too.

Years ago they had portage races right up sheridan street, but these new (first year) ones had a few new twists to them.
Teams consited of two people. One person would run about 100 yards with canoe turn around and run back. Next the partner would run the same carrying a duluth pack wieghted with sand and a 4 man tent. Once the pack carrier returned you both set up then tore down, folded, and stuffed the tent in its sack, put it in the pack and snapped all three buckles closed. We took second, snapping our final buckle an instant after the winners.
My planned partner stayed out fishing too long that morning so I went to the park alone and managed to pick up an Outward Bound gal (Katie)for my partner. She did well.
When I arrived and saw the canoes were Grummans I was happy (anyone can run with a kevlar on their head). There were only 4 teams entered and I easily won the canoe carrying leg of it.
Neither Katie or I knew there was sand (about 30 lbs, I would guess) in the pack along with the tent, until she started to carry it.
But alas....I cost us the win when I at first used the cross pole of the tent (4-man Eureaka) as one of the corner poles on my end. Thus costing us at least 10 seconds and the race.

We did get T-shirts for our $20 entry fee. The winners were suposed to get $100, but I'm not sure how that went, when they only took in $80.

I plan to be there next year.

They should consider next year turning a few of those Ely webcam's on the race then we can watch you win next year.
