Title: Lower Wisconsin
Post by The_Beaver on Aug 1st, 2005 at 2:08pm
Spent the weekend paddling the Lower Wisconsin from Sauk to Spring Green. What a zoo. Never have seen so many people. Plan was to paddle past Arena then set up camp. By the time we found a suitable site away from the throng we were only a few miles North of the railroad bridge and it was 7PM.

Water was down a little. It was very hot and sunny. Finally did find a nice secluded spot to pitch tents.

Next time and all subsequent trips will start below Spring Green. That top portion is just too busy for this Beaver.

The Beaver, check   (You need to Login or Register from my experience last year.
Since then I've been staying below Spring Green, closer to Lone Rock but there has been an increase in use in that area as well. Fortunately, this year the water is quite low and there is an abundance of camping places.

Kingfisher,

Ditto. We were stopped by the DNR on Saturday to check licenses, make sure we didn't have glass, make sure we did have pfds....I asked why they weren't enforcing basic boating laws. For example, jet skis and motorized jon boats going full throttle and passing by canoes within 25 feet. The warden didn't have much of a response.

This is a wonderful area...truly unique in the lower 48....and it is being loved to death. Unlike most Bdubs/Q visitors, Lower Wis visitors seem to lack basic camping etiquette. It's a shame.
