Title: How to apply your QJ decals
Post by Yellowbird on Sep 2nd, 2005 at 5:31pm
Start with a clean surface.

- Peel the backing from the "translucent" frontal covering.
*** The decal stays with the front covering ***

- Starting with a corner and then edge, roll the decal/covering across the hull.  Press into place as you go.

- Rub the decal on through the covering and then carefully peel the covering away.

- Small air bubbles will get trapped underneath the decal. Pop them with a needle and press the air out. (It won't be noticable when you stand back.)

Don't mind the pic resolution - they look great.   :-*
Send me a PM if there remains any questions regarding application.

I have placed alot of stickers on cars & boats. I always find it best to mist on some soapy water 1st (dish soap & water mix) then place sticker.

This does two things:
1st it allows you to position the sticker exactly where you want it.
2nd you can use a credit card to remove all bubbles.

There may be a difference between a 'sticker' and a 'decal'. This is a sticker IMO. A clean dry surface is required. I'd also assume that you may want to remove any wax first with ammonia before application and once it's on, it's on. YB and others would know more about this and I don't know if anyone actually has theirs yet but I don't think moisture of any kind is a good idea unless you don't want it to stick.

It looks to me like a Vinyl decal..... but I could be wrong. I do agree with the removal of wax.....  if it is vinyl, I would use soapy water as I mentioned above, if it is not a vinyl sticker I don't know if I would put it on my canoe, as it wouldnt last long.

I put mine on this afternoon. Before I did, I wrote the people that produced them:
"...what you would suggest as the best way to apply...?"

"Good Afternoon David,
What we usually use is denatured alcohol to clean the surface, this makes sure any dirt and grim or even oil residue is completely gone and a credit card will work to apply the decal mattering the size, if it is small it should work out for you. Try putting down the decal dry, this will avoid the bubbles all together..."

So, I cleaned the surface with denatured and used a credit card to apply the labels. No air bubbles no problems. The hardest thing was first pealing off the backing. I found it worked best to pull 180 degrees directly back (slowly, carefully) on a flat surface to keep the logo attached to the front covering. The URL was most difficult to peal the backing from but once I rubbed it on the canoe it was much easier to peal the front off using the same technique.

It looks just like the name and pinstripes that came on my canoe and the thickness is about the same too. The original stuff is still hanging on after 16 years, although there are few nicks - none of which were memorable.

Decals shipped today. Thanks for being patient everyone. They were a little late going out.

Everyone who ordered will get e-mails too but I'm referencing this post in that e-mail regarding application instructions so I had to make this thread available to everyone. This seemed as fine a place as any to do that.

A few people who wanted a pair missed the deadline. I don't stock these but... I'll do another batch if/when 10 people reply to this post saying they'd like a pair.

Hey nice job pigsmoke! It will be interesting to see how well they hold up to claws and teeth.  ;)

Mags, welcome... In order to do them economically they are ordered in batches. So, if a few more people expressed interest it would be worthwhile to do another. If you wanted, you could send me an e-mail with "QuietJourney Decals" as the subject. No promises but I'd probably run across it whenever I do the next batch and could let you know they're available again.

Hey pigsmoke!
I nominate you for the " Thinking Outside The Box Award".
The QJ decals are either going to ward off furry intruders, or make them even more curious to see what's inside the "Art-Deco" barrels ;D

You mean your FREE decals?  Quit your cryin'.  You got what you paid for.   Besides, it gives that generic pirogue some character.

Post a picture Jug!  You defaced my canoe in your drunken stupor!  Was the canoe upside down or where you tits up in your driveway when you applied it?
