Title: Bushwhackers Jamboree 2010...
Post by Stumpy on Dec 8th, 2005 at 3:56am
Hey, it's December 7th...
Congratulations to Phgportager, Hexnymph, Pennpaddler and the rest of their gang. They (6 in all) were the only people to make it to the Bushwhackers Jamboree 2005...one can only guess at the tales of adventure told around the fire, at their remote camp that night. ???  They ARE the charter members of the BUG-BIT club....You can pick up your patches in 4 1/2 years  ;).
By all rights they should pick the lake and dates for the next Bushwhackers Jamboree. However, at their insistence, I will continue with the honor of scouting, and picking the lake for 2010. I do plan however, to meet their approval (and them) on said lake.
I am also going back to the "Jamboree" name, since my fears of a BIG party out in the woods were unfounded.
So here goes....

BUSHWHACKERS JAMBOREE 2010....

WHO....Whoever can get a permit and get to the lake on the dates to be revealed later. No daytrippers (campers only)...we will gather in the evening.

WHAT...It will be an informal meeting of tough and hardy travelers, where stories and information will be told. Knowledge, that has been earned, and should continued to be earned.

WHERE...It will be on a lake near the middle of Quetico, with no name, no portage trail to it (none), good depth, good water, plenty of bugs and campable shorline, and maybe...just maybe good fishing.

WHEN....It will be in mid-June 2010...when bugs are bad, and so are the voyageurs.

WHY...Because the best information should be earned. Because exploring those no-name lakes makes for great adventure. Because I want to meet other bushwhackers and hear where they've been, and tell them where I've been, and exchange great stories. Because this time I REALLY want to shake the hand of anyone who gets there!!!

HOW...Barring any changes in the permit system...I will anounce the exact date and location on this website at 9:00 PM (cst), December 7, 2009.

Thank you,
Stumpy (your humbled scribe)

If you don't tell us until December 7, how will we know where to meet you in mid-June??  ???  ??? ;D ;D ;D

My hunch is that the water will be hard and white on December 7, 2010.

By 2010, I expect to have developed & mastered a new medium of creative expression in which to document, for all Posterity, the many expected significant developments of this worthy endeavor dubbed Jamboree II.

Think modern-day "Songs of the Voyageurs"!

Think "Bushwhacker Bee-Bop"!!

With 4 1/2 years to practice & acquire new material for Bushwhacker Bee-Bop, I figure to score a platinum album, at the very least, with my inaugural efforts in this new art form.

Advance orders may be placed in bait shops and bars everywhere (north of Virginia, MN)....

Bee Bop eh!
That might be a tough challenge for you Jimbo.
Topping the Voyageur Rap at the Jimboree this year, will be a tough challenge to top.  I sure wish I had that on video I'm sure you would have went Platinum by now.  ;)
The gestures as well as the crowd were all left in awe.
Put me on the list, even if it means a trip to the next Jimboree to get the cd.

No

If someone else cares to plan another get together (Jimboree etc...), by all means do so.

I figure every 5 years, gives bushwhackers a few years to explore new lakes, thus giving them new adventures or finds to tell of. When I was younger and more free, I could explore a lot more in a year or two....but now I have less time to do so.
Also, I need those 5 years to practice-up on my Voodoo.  :-X

I'm in.  I'll try solo, providing five years from now doesn't bring other realities to my plate?

Maybe I'll just haunt your cabin and have a large party, burn the Green A Frame down in your absence.

Socks might stink if not washed out from time to time.  Five years just might give um enough time to air out.

Love funning you Stumpers. Thanks for the guidance along the Kawishiwi Lake heading to that hidden spot off the beaten path north.

I expect my patch before then.

I would like to proudly display it to those who make it in 2010.  Tell stories of how it was in the old days.  Back when it was so tough only 6 men ultimatly made it.

I offer a tip for those who would like to go.  On any trip you go on between now and then...spend 2+ days where the red lines don't go - we do.  Bushwhacking will become "?routine?", Or atleast by 2010 there will not be much that can discourage you.  It always offers a bit extra in the overall experience.

Out of curiosity...
We do generally plan 2 days of bushwhacking anymore. Keep in mind I only get to be in the BW or Q for 8 days a year.  It's just plan fun - after the frustration subsides.

Is this normal?  how often does anybody else actually bushwhack?

see you in 2010.

OK Folks...
I've got two prospective lakes for the 2010 Jamboree.
Over the next few years, I'll be heading into them to see if one is suitable.
Don't expect this one to be easier than the last (2005).
Expect a twist in how the lake is revealed.

What a woman I have, in my wife.  By that time it may be a family event for us, which would put us way over the limit so we will probably just stop by and say hi.

Title: False Bravado & Glory Days
Post by Riversend on Oct 11th, 2006 at 1:15am
This came to mind after reading the above posts and thinking back on the re-telling of past adventures:

Said one of these men, long past seventy years of age: "I could carry ,paddle , walk and sing with any man I ever saw. I have been twenty five years a canoe man, and fortyone years in service; no portage was ever too long for me. Fiftysongs could I sing. I have saved the lives of 10 voyagers. Have had 12 wives and 6 running dogs. I spent all my money in pleasure. Were I young again, I should spend my life the same way over . There is no life so happy as a voyagers life.

Glory Days / False Bravado / Recolecting days of youth/ and bragging just a little.

Hex,
I've been holding off on a reply here, as I wanted to post a whole trip report...but I don't know when I'll get around to that.
No, we did'nt go all the way to Barto. We went several miles up the Barto creek. That included 3 bushwhacks along small canyons/falls. We turned around and went out to camp on Dent lake and then headed North from there.
Barto did'nt seem important enough to do that whole creek, that was drying more as we headed up it (it's 7 miles long).  We also started up it at noon that day...too late.
It was just my nephew and I, and I've lowered my risk taking with a family waiting on me back home. I might start renting a sattelite phone for long bushwhacks. The physical parts not a problem....yet.
We could have gotten in there from the East, but the creek was enticing to me.
Anyway, we continued on our wandering route and did 72 portages on that trip...7 days/6 nights.
I did'nt know you were going there, sorry if I caused you to plan around that, expecting I'd be going there too....plans change.
If we ever do meet though....it should surely be on a bushwhack lake.

Post by hexnymph on Oct 30th, 2006 at 3:37pm
We were actually in there the first week of June.  We didn't run the whole Barto creek either.  We traveled south from Drag lake or at least half way across a portage out of Drag.  I have also been "not getting around" to putting together a trip report.  We also ran into a lot of dried out lakes and Barto creek didn't provide much till we were close to Barto lake.  The lake was a nice one although fishing was slow.  Some day I'll post a full report... some day.

See you in 2010

Drivn'n around Ely Sat around noonish 08 /23 2008...heading to the the WELY Radio station to pic up a copy of the "Jewels of Ely" CD" and who would I see?

I say to my self... "Well I'll be".

I yell out the Window... "Ed?"

No response ...Red haired man dressed in green keeps walking..briskly.

I yell.... "ED!"

No response... same as before..brisk walk continues... away from me.

I Yell...  "STUMPY!"

Man turns around looks at me and says..."K!".

Well gang... yes, here we go again.  Stump has been out scouting and has a few locations in mind.  Though I'm not privy to say...  thoughts are to not make the Jamboree quite as difficult..but not to make it easy either...or why bother.. Yes several locations are on the table... though I may have an idea...don't ask as you know Stump may just have been fibbing a bit to me...  Ed showed concern that it would be real but not death defying, but not exactly easy or what's the point.  Said to me.. I'm getting older too you know...and I think about my wife and kid now..every-time I'm out there..about to do some of the things I used to...now I stop and think it over.

Though, as it seems yes... the Jamboree is in the planning stages....or his name ain't "Ed"... and the paddle that points the way to his place does say... "Ed's Place"... so his name really is Ed.

Speaking for Stump as he can not reply today as he's guiding a group this week.

Stumpers...hope I did not say anything out of line or context that you did not want said... but your public wants to know.

I suppose upon your return you will want to fill us in on what is or is not to be... or your name ain't Ed, ol friend.

Our trip went well...fishing could have been better, but we still managed a few walleye dinners , just had to work for them (not sure the term "work" really aplies)
Nothing to say about the Jamboree right now, I'm still dithering over a couple lakes.

Doubt he he will get too specific, don't think anyone here would prescout the lake... that would ruin the fun, but you never know.

Why not bring the boy Troy. They are never to young to learn about the women of the north; or will he be tied up with Bball? Great post BTW on the Barto crash and such-kudos to all persons on that trip.....know the moose/pseudo portage on the Louse river route and no no it was not my candy wrapper ;) .....but I did see your folks' boot tracks.

Besides, he would be a liability on an aggressive bushwhack... he is my son, but moves through the woods like his mother  :o

I will have to see where we will end up, who knows maybe I will team up with a cigar smoking southern boy again  ;) or maybe I will find someone else to take... either way, I will be there.

I say we all take turns camping out at Stumps cabin..for a day or two...forming a continuous stream of campers through out the summer, until one of us can nail him down for a date, time, lake...

Just one long summer time fling..with campers coming and going all season long.  We could sell t-shirts with Stumps picture on it.. with a bounty... ;D

Not saying I'm attending.. but I'm thinking..could happen.

How about it Stump...more info.

OK I'll give up one. Its one the east side of the BWCA. Liittle lake called Daniels. Go right after ice out' and troll the SE side of the lake, there's a little Island on your to your left, stay to the right, dead center inbetween the island and shore. I use a line counter reel and an 8ft walleye rod.  attach 1/4 oz white maribou jig. Tip with the head of a fresh rainbow shiner and eat the body.(optional). Then let out another 75 to 100 ft of line. paddle like hell. You must arrive b4 sun up. fishing slows with the rising of the sun. say hello to the otter who ate 6 dozen of my minnows last year.Note to self, locking minnow bucket. Catch one fish to eat, release the rest please. Upon catching 1 delicious redfin laker, immediatly build fire and cook in tinfoil pouch with dill and a little butter. I use a planer board and snap weights. 50-50 method. :-?

So, Being that I'm new here I will be committing myself and my 16 year old son to this task.  My goal: the DUCE.  If we plan and train hard enough, We have the opportunity to become... A DUCE.  It may not be as highly coveted as being a charter member, but hey silvers better than bronze.

I look forward to the upcoming info!

RangerDad,

Yeah, this place is crawlin' with "characters", especially when the old Jamboree hype REALLY gets cranked up, starting around Pearl Harbor Day... Stumpy's Day of Infamy.  My son & I made the attempt on the original Jamboree.. just like you're planning.  We came up a little short & decided to host a soggy canoeists' festival on pink flamingo island, instead.  That worked out just as well & has, in fact, become somewhat of an "annual thing" (minus the soggy part).

My son will be overseas & therefore won't be able to make the attempt next year.  As for me, chances are I'll find myself in the general vicinity once again.

I wish you the best of luck in your attempt!  Welcome to QJ!

Fellow QJers,
i have been lurking on this thread for awhile, out of curiosity. My schedule rules out the Bushwhacker Jamboree, but after exhaustive research I have definitely, positively, without-a-doubt, IDENTIFIED THE SITE.
I will happily provide the information to anyone who wants it. Simply write your name, address, and email on a 3X5 postcard. Securely tape the postcard to the underside of the stern seat of a Bell Northwind canoe, blackgold with all wood trim, and ship it to me. Send me a PM and I'll give you my address. Upon arrival of said postcard and canoe, I will send you the information via registered US mail.
Sorry, no substitutions.

Fishpig -

I may have answers to your two questions.

"HOW LONG AGO WAS THAT?"  Well, unfortunately, I don't have my BWJ's here at the office as I take my lunch break, but I'm wanting to say I wrote that story for the 2006 Spring issue.

"WHERE IS PINK FLAMINGO ISLAND?"  You see, some say it is like Brigadoon... it only appears every fifth year.  My guess, however, is that its right where I left it, due west of the mid-section of Cairn Lake.  That first flamingo-following crowd dubbed that auspicious event as "Jimboree" (a pure rip-off & alternative "happening" to Jamboree).  I think we've celebrated a Jimboree every year since.  You would not believe all the pink champagne glasses, balloons, fishing lures, feathers, signs, hats, shirts, fish buoys, lawn ornaments (of course), fish stew, & other highly unlikely pink paraphenalia that, subsequently, have been hauled into remote wilderness areas to celebrate this unusual event!  Ultimately, the location of Pink Flamingo Island seems to move around on an annual basis.  Were you to plot its actual geographic coordinates, you would discover it seems to exist wherever I happen to end up in a given year.

It seems I cannot avoid this island, so I have come to accept it as my summer-tripping fate.  For those wishing to experience it, Pink Flamingo Island will likely appear THIS YEAR somewhere in the wilds of Woodland Caribou Park.  NEXT YEAR?  Why, I expect it to appear in proximity to Bushwhackers Jamboree, of course!

RangerDad,

Ah, yes, the most recent BWJ issue with the bushwhack story... let the full truth be known!

NOT ONLY did the two guys in THAT BWJ story steal MY idea (new eastern entry to the Q into McKenzie via those old logging roads), they assigned ME the role of watching/monitoring THEM while they did it!!  I was assigned the couch potato end of their SpotMessenger device and received messages via satellite to the internet showing me their daily geographic coordinates EACH day!  Talk about frustration!!  Honestly, those two clowns had me a bit worried at the end of Day One when I could clearly see they did NOT end up on McKenzie Lake, as planned.  However, their Spot Message to me that night did not indicate they required me to send in the cavalry for their rescue.  In the subsequent days, those lowlifes proceeded to camp (& send me messages with map coordinates) at EVERY fishing hole we had previously shared together, causing me great distress & much drooling over my missed opportunity!

By the way, I would be remiss if I failed to point out that those two scum bags are annual "Jimboree" participants.  In fact, you see that dude in the BWJ pic with the mosquito net on his head???  HE is a bonafide "charter member" of that original Pink Flamingo Island crowd. [And, incidently, he also can always be counted upon to carry an extra bottle of stool softener around should fellow paddlers every require such medication]

Alas, I suppose it is simply Fate that we scum bags - as well as birds of a feather - tend to flock together.....   ;)

Fishpig,

True & somewhat true!

Three of us in Woods Walker's pic are older farts (flamino guy, guy in yellow shirt, & guy in blue shirt & blue hat... a former Olympic champion who would go out & swim 15 laps around our island each morning).  In our cases, we tend to have been around long enough to earn plenty of vacation.  OR, in the case of my son (far left), he had a long break between semesters at school.  OR, in the case of the professional wrestler on the far right (you'd recognize him IF he had his performer's "mask" on), he can arrange his matches to accommodate his canoe-tripping passion.  Likewise, the Broadway playwright (pictured sitting down) was actually hard at work, searching for her muse; she went on to produce a fine work that we soon expect to see the light of day on stage in NYC (rumor has it to be a poignant drama involving canoeists stranded on a remote wilderness island).  Harder to account for are the remaining two characters.  The fellow second from left (dark beige outfit & hat) is a bit of an eccentric millionaire (billionaire?) and something of a midwestern tycoon who made a killing in fertilizers.  He goes wherever he wants at any time.  Speaking of "killing", the background of the remaining (shady) character with the orange whistle is something of a dark mystery.  First of all, he flew into the Twin Cities from Bogota, Columbia.  Secondly, he smoked funny-smelling cigars the ENTIRE time together on Pink Flamigo Island.  Frankly, the rest of us were simply afraid to ask just WHAT he did for a living!  He claimed he was a "contractor" who dabbled in films & expected to be out on the west coast soon to arrange a big "deal".

Somewhat true is your comment about "LESS kids".  In my case, my two boys are fully grown... yet still considered "kids" in my ancient eyes.  The collegian pictured on the far left of WW's pic has been going north with me for nearly fifteen years.  The playwright (seated) brought her kid along on last year's Jimboree.  I have fond memories of him "sailing" his kayak on Bearpelt Creek.  He is a fine young man.  Even the mysterious Columbian dude has also taken a kid into Quetico.  He tells me that the two of them planted a very "special" cache on Draper Lake.  Anyone who showed up at the campsite where he set it up would have a really special time, I expect.

Anyhow, now you know the rest of the story....

OK,
For my 500th post...Here's one  way (of several),  you can get there....

First off, there's an island on a nice lake, where you can have your gathering or staging area. It will be an obvious spot. I'll call it "Interlopers Island".
From Interlopers Island it is simple.
You first paddle, then bushwhack, then paddle, then bushwhack, then paddle. Next you bushwhack (or bushwhack, paddle, bushwhack...but I don't recomend this). After that, you then paddle, then bushwhack (toughest part), then paddle, then bushwhack and Wallah !! You are there !
Lot's of shoreline and room to spread out, and wait for the BUG-BIT Club Initiation, that night. Which I'm sure will be quite scary...er...I mean fun.

with much respect,
Stumpy

Those rain day pictures , remind me WHY I wouldn't go on a trip without a saw and a small axe/hatchet to cut and split to get the dry heartwood inside.  A small piece of tubing 1/4-1/2 " and the height of your pack, makes a lightweight BLOW pipe to get even the most stubborn fire roaring ;)

It sure was comfy under that huge tarp  ;D

& Magic Paddlers brother enjoyed his perch on top of my barrel.

Bo that midnight paddle & portages was great, even under the circumstances.... don't know how we found the portages in the dark.... but we knew where camp was for 3 miles away thanks to my spare red led head lamp.  ;D

I even forgot to mention the part about your vanishing food pack!

Jimbo   8)

Ahh..the missing food pack…

In over a decade of canoe camping I’ve yet to loose my lunch to a bear. The first few years I may have over done it most times, hanging the food bag better than it need be, almost becoming a ritual, until, well, the year of the 1st annual BWJ.

I realized I have gotten lazy over the years looking for simpler ways to canoe camp, even resorting to hanging my pack over the side of a cliff or rock, thinking bears can’t be that smart, or be brave enough to jump off a cliff on to a pack, doing what it takes to severe the pack from it’s rope, however….

At the BWJ, I did just that…hung my pack off a rock cliff on the Island we were camped on that eve.  Upon waking the next morn, going to retrieve my food pack, scratching my head seeing the rope no longer taunt, and to my dismay overlooking the cliff was no food pack.  Only the end of a rope dangling in the wind playfully.

I stood there for a moment in disbelief.  Gratefully I was with a group, but the thought of needing to pawn food from others that were also on rations, considering weight issues regarding paddling to the heart of the Quetico, was not appealing.

After gathering my thoughts I decided to scout the shores for my missing food pack. Just maybe I hadn’t done a good job with the knot, or there was something left floating along the shores of Cairn Lake.

About then Woods Walker approached and asked, “”What’s wrong K”?
I said to WW, “Look”.
WW replied, “I knew I should have said something last night, but it looked to me like you didn’t do a very good job with your knot, and that you might not have hung your food bag out of reach of a good sized bear”.

I wanted to argue with Woods Walker, but the facts spoke for them selves.  At the end of my rope, hanging over the cliff, was nothing but air.  My food pack was now, perhaps at the bottom of the lake, in the stomach of a bear, or had floated to another shore.   I decided to head out in my Wenonah prism kayak to look for my food pack.

It was then that Woods Walker told me that Pink Flamingo’s had a dark side.

WW said “The Flamingos had grabbed my food pack early that morning while I was still snoring and hid it in the bush.  He and QP had watched the whole thing. That if I looked closely there was one flamingo pointing the way to my missing food pack.

After scouting the Island I found an honest flamingo, pointing the way to my missing food pack. It was April 1st in the bush.

I did not mean to stop this thread dead in it's tracks.

It was "good times and good people".  I learned a lot on that trip that I'll never forget from many.  One thing that sticks in my mind is while climbing the range to look out from the top of an abondon fire tower was when WW broke branches along the way so we could find our way back.  Stuff like that just might safe my life some day.

I thought I heard a rumor it would be a bit easier because you are getting older and stiffer in the knees  ;)
By the maps I would say that could be from No Man to Louisa  :-? .

I've got two prospective lakes for the 2010 Jamboree.
Over the next few years, I'll be heading into them to see if one is suitable.
Don't expect this one to be easier than the last (2005).
Expect a twist in how the lake is revealed.
Stumpy

Hex & Penn etc..
You'll have your promised patches by then.

Easier ?.....Well, you will have the option to break up the march into the Jamboree. You can take more than 1 day to bust in there. It might be harder phisically, but 2 routes in (and maybe more) will offer more peace of mind, than BWJ 2005. There will be plenty of water en route, and even a surprise...if you keep your eyes peeled & are lucky.
Dang !....I guess I've got to get those patches, as promised.....guess I better plan a bake sale.

I can tell you is you are leapfroging your gear it makes it a lot easier to find if you have a GPS marker to go back to.  I can find a lake after a mile of bushwhacking but a pack after 100 yards may be another matter.

Nope, it aint Hoare.
Hoare lake was one place I had planned to talk about at BWJ I, but you've given more info on it here, than I had anyway.
I knew it had trout & a mesage jar.

as for the lake to be.............more than one island !

Title: Re: Bushwhackers Jamboree 2010...
Post by bojibob on Sep 14th, 2009 at 8:16pm
Stumpy are these clues still accurate?

Clue 1: Lake near the middle of Quetico, with no name, no portage trail

Clue 2: Man, look beyond those ridges, and you'll find a women on the other side.

Mystery Poem?:

I would much love to croon
'neath a big June full moon
but alas, it is not meant to be
for I'll be there before...
dropped one egg on the floor
leaving not quite a dozen. You see ?

Clue 3: First off, there's an island on a nice lake, where you can have your gathering or staging area.

Clue 4: You can take more than 1 day to bust in there. It might be harder physically, but 2 routes in (and maybe more) will offer more peace of mind, than BWJ 2005. There will be plenty of water en route, and even a surprise...if you keep your eyes peeled & are lucky.

Clue 5: Nope, it aint Hoare.

A few months ago, I got a private message from intrepid_camper.
Not only had she nailed the date of the coming Bushwhackers Jamboree, but she knew the lake too.
She promissed not to tell.
She figured it out from my vague (at least I thought so) clues.
Sharp lady....no doubt.

However...I've been tossing around the idea of changing the date that I originally posted hints about. It would only be a change of a day or two.

You'll all find out on Dec 6th, around 9 PM.
