Title: Ham Post by Westwood on Mar 7th, 2006 at 2:59am
Can you still buy ham that doesn't require refrigeration? It seems that all the hams in the grocery stores and meat markets require refrigeration. If I remember my history lessons correctly, the whole purpose of making hams was because it was a way of preserving meat without refrigeration. Curing the pork with smoke, salt and sugar was all that was necessary to keep the ham from spoiling. I used to be able to buy ham that didn't need refrigeration off the shelf from Cub Foods or Super One. I still pack ham when I go to Quetico. I just freeze it before I leave and then give it some insulation and it does fine. But I would prefer ham that doesn't require refrigeration.
So does anyone know where you can buy ham that doesn't require refrigeration. |
