I can't recall the amount of alcohol allowed over the border.  Is it one or two liters?

It's two liters...(actual just a a hair less, I think, but it's never been much of an issue?)

Why worry about taking it across the border? Just by the best there is in Canada.

From the Canadian Customs website, this is what I found:

" 4. (1) Subject to subsection (2), the baggage that a person who is not a resident of Canada may temporarily import under tariff item No. 9803.00.00 consists of any goods that the person imports for their personal use and that are appropriate for their needs and consistent with the purpose, nature and duration of their intended stay in Canada, but does not include more than

(a) 1.5 L of wine or 1.14 L of spirits or 1.14 L of spirits and wine or 8.5 L of beer or ale;

(b) 200 cigarettes, 50 cigars, 200 g of manufactured tobacco and 200 tobacco sticks;"

I found the information in two different places on a Canadian Customs site.  It looks like just over a liter of hard liquor, 1.5 litres of wine, or a case of beer.  

Since I cross the border using a RABC permit, the only person asking us how much liquor we have is the ranger, whose interest - it seems - is more sociological than bureaucratic.  Last trip with a crew of four we took along 7 liters.  The ranger was amused by that number.

Back when there were manned customs stations "near" the ranger stations, the PP customs officer said next trip we could leave beer off with him and he'd keep it chilled for us to swill on the way out, just make sure there was some "excess" he could "confiscate".  Never got to test him out since the next year they closed the customs stations down.

We had about 2 liters per person and the nice lady at Sand Point just kind of laughed and said no worries.  I think she was surprised that we told her we were over.  Of course we thought legal was 1.75l, when in fact it is less, per the post above.

As for this year, we are going to try and pare that down a bit, the stuff weights a ton.  I might try some bacardi 151 vs the good captain.  Our trip bartender goes a little nuts and tends to burn the drinks, we'll have to keep an eye on him if we start using the really hard stuff.

Our bartender likes to start early.  This forces us to keep up with him or he will be enjoying it all for himself.  This year I gave him one rule.  When the sun touches the pines and we are heading out to catch some walters - serve 'em up!  I also mentioned that the difference in weight from the new SR 18.5 and the old alumnacraft does not mean more liters(-:

I'd only recommend bringing bacardi 151 if you are going to kill the bugs in your drinking water or if you are going to light your lanterns and start your campfires with it.  

Instead, pick up a couple of bottles of Pelinkovac in Ely.  Just ask the person at any of the liquor stores for a couple bottles of "Plink." You won't be disappointed.  It's a local favorite and a must in the BW's or Quetico.  

i'd watch out for 151 and the like in canoe country. this one time on ensign lake................

We used to take 151 until our last trip.  Our canoeing partners were wine makers, so they brought 190 proof brandy (used in making wine) instead. A little bit goes a long way! ;D

SS, thats what always gets us started too.  Gotta make sure we get our allottment.  Afterall, we are carrying it in too.  

I thought I would ease into the hard stuff  by taking 151 vs. Everclear.  I might have to try that Plinko stuff, can someone give me more info?

I bought this at Mike's Liquors in Ely.

Personally, when coming by Canada I always bring Wisers De Luxe whisky, and when via the USA Makers Mark.
