Title: Modifying/editing posts
Post by Basswood on Apr 10th, 2006 at 6:55pm
I was wondering if there is a time limit on modifying your own posts.  I was going to keep a running tally of the Twins record without posting a new post every time, but I cannot edit my post.  Just wondering if this is the case.

Thanks.

I also have noticed that some threads no longer have the 'modify' or 'remove' buttons. It would be nice to have them back so we can burn our garbage and pack out our trash occasionally. 8) 8) 8)

A change was made recently to impose a time limit to which posts might be modified and removed. This was done to prevent posts from being deleted, so as to preserve the continuity of threads.

You have one day to modify or delete postings and you have 30 minutes to modify without showing a "last edit time". Moderators can help modify or edit a posting upon request from the respective forums.

FWIW, I would appreciate a return to the old way. Perhaps I missed it, but I never saw anything posted about proposing a change. I believe that anyone who later wishes to delete or modify their own post, should have the freedom to do so, without involving a moderator. Those who make the posts, own them.

I believe at the very least, that when moderators wish to make changes in how things are done, it would be wise to 'run it past' the inukshuks on that forum prior to making any change.

If you don't plan to return to the old way, I would at least like to see it return for a time period of 2 weeks-1 month so that those who wish to clean garbage from their posts can do so.

Someone brought up a problem because they didn't like what they saw happening. The moderators and I discussed it, I made a decision after giving it some thought. Legitimate and helpful reasons for modifying a post, like the one that started this thread, as well as some harmful ones were discussed. I, and I alone, decided the harmful results could far outweigh the beneficial ones and set the time period.

Basically my feeling is 24 hours is plenty of time to regret and modify or delete something posted in the heat of the moment. More time just invites abuse the people who have already read what was written, and perhaps responded to, will never notice. Threads take a direction for a reason. Remove/modify any part of that reason and those who responded to the original post end up sounding stupid.

I never expected anyone wrote anything thinking they could just take it back when no one was looking.

That said, I apologize for not pointing out the change when it happened.
