Title: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by thebutcher on May 24th, 2006 at 6:40pm
ever since saturday I have been experiencing tremendously slow page loading on the initial page. after i get into the discussion board it seems to be ok for the most part, but certain other things are slow to load also. pictures, portage database, etc. all are painfully slow to open. i have to put the address in the browser and then switch to something else in the interim or it is like watching paint dry. all of this despite being on a T1 line and every other site operating normally. anybody else "slogging through the bog" like this, or any ideas what may be different since Saturday?

Believe me you are singing to the choir... It's been unacceptable for the cost since February. Once in a great, great while it is what it should be for a short time. I understand all too well.
Long story very short - QJ will be changing servers in the next week or two - maybe three if I run into problems. I'll give you guys a heads up a day or three in advance. This forum will be a bit different too if all goes well. |

I hate to say this, but I'm finding the new QJ much slower than the old QJ. Anyone else having this problem? :-/

I just changed the board to a more secure version. The server has not changed so our intermittent speed issues will remain for a while. It is a little better though.

Yup. Today needed extra oooos... (And I appreciate posts like this 'cause they actually help a little.)
I called tech support last night when it started and again today. They agreed... and are supposedly checking into it as there is enough verified documentation that this is indeed an ongoing problem that shouldn't be. I'm still awaiting a call from a system admin with an explaination. (That's a new twist in this saga.) I tried one VPS, it was a no go - stupid really. The second wasn't much better. Finding out the hard way took time. I'm not a Unix command line sort of guy. In the mean time, it became necessary for this forum to be updated A.S.A.P. ( due to an overload of potential spammers) so the current server problems still exist. I've been assured twice now that the amount of resources QJ uses is well within the range of their pricey idea of shared hosting and this server has admitted problems. Perhaps when the dust settles I can give you guys some extra PM space. ;) ;) Funny how things work. I always wanted this site to be like a BW/Q trip. I'm calling today just another windy day on a big lake. Oddest thing, Inuks and members paddled into it. Guests all but disappeared from view. |

At the moment, everything, even the time intensive stuff, is running freeking great! (Not much else to do while waiting for a phone call with one thing on my mind.)

Funny thing is the old server is working as it should today too so...
db wrote on Jun 9th, 2006 at 9:39pm:
It's working like it should today but I'm going to withhold judgment for a month. I forget how long it took to open my PM inbox back in june. I know the old server didn't do 48 in 2sec way back in February. That's why the 50 limit was implemented so I'm hopeful. |

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by db on Nov 14th, 2006 at 8:20am
Since the site has been responding very well for me (and I'm accessing it a lot throughout the day), my guess would be it's closer to the Charter Com end. Unless of course :( you found a path to (You need to Login or Register. That would be a problem I'd want to hear about if you accidentally stumbled upon it from elsewhere on QJ. It's a ~new page w/ a very specific purpose for very special visitors.

I guess I didn't explain very well so I'm going to answer publicly...
That's interesting... what you did was trace yourself. (I think - If those results are intermittent, as in sometimes those last hops don't time out I'd inform comcast. I don't think those last 4 hops should time out.) Anyway, you need to type quietjourney.com into the box. (You need to Login or Register. Wherever there are time outs is where routing problems lie. |

Timing is everything and SPAM makes the internet go 'round and 'round...
Just a thought - can anyone here read Russian? I'm totally serious. The Google, babelfish translations are pretty much useless on spammer slang. P.S. - I'm starting to appreciate obfuscated code yet I'd rather just paddle. |

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by db on Dec 15th, 2006 at 5:57pm
So I took a peek at your tracks from yesterday.
Looks like the first page you looked at took nearly two minutes to fully load. I don't blame you at all for getting frustrated on that one. There were some other very odd anomalies that make absolutely no sense to me. You looked at like what, 6 pages? IMO - When I click on a link in this site, I expect the page requested to instantly appear unless I know it's a time intensive page. Patience is usually required on those. Such is life. After 1 second of waiting, I might blink. After 2 seconds, I may make a face. After 4 seconds, OK, yup, I'm a little annoyed now. After 8 seconds I'm a bit pissed considering what I pay at both ends. After 16 seconds I'll try to find something more interesting. After 32 seconds, I'll consider calling because it may be repeatable after touchtone hell and (the usual stuff) - IF and when my timing is absolutely perfect and I expect my experience will be easily reproducible. IMCO - I know this server better than I'd like to. What I don't know is what sort of virus protection you're running not to mention when it was last updated or run. Considering your tracks, that would be where I'd suggest you take a good look. If everyone chimed in and agreed things were slow, well, now there's something I could point to and perhaps do something about. It is slower than I'd like to see but all I can truly fine tune to my liking at the moment is the master on/off switch on a somewhat individual basis. The things I can't control seem a bit better today than yesterday... Everyone's mileage may vary a little bit. Yours, I expect, is way outside the norm unless a bunch of people chime in to tell me otherwise. |

I have the newest Norton Edition....just renewed it, yesterday, but the problems were started a couple of weeks ago.
Now it takes 2 minutes to do anything.....sign on, check the POD, change from page to page.......Oh! now I don't get the POD....just a box telling me what I'm missing. If it works this way for everyone with Norton Anti-Virus, you guys are in trouble! I will not be visiting much anymore, too frustrating :-/ I'll check in once in a while to see if you have it fixed! Don't expect a contribution from me :'( For now I'm done! fishguts |

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by PhantomJug on Dec 17th, 2006 at 11:57pm
I don't think I have ever had a slow connection since the new server took over. Sometimes the lunch hour is a little slower but nothing to make me leave the site - I just figure everyone else up here is using the ISP at the same time choking the tunnel up a bit. I just installed Norton's 2006 at both home and office and it hasn't effected my internet - (the email is another story however).

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by db on Dec 18th, 2006 at 12:50am
While this particular forum is the least read and while anyone with the a similar problem may not want to take the same two minutes to post when e-mail would be soooooo much faster...
This site is not as fast as it use to be with the new server for the time intensive stuff I do more than a few times a day - I'll agree w/ anyone on that but is anyone experiencing any greater problems than I stated above to simply view or post a reply? No need to reply if it's acceptable to you. I know what the usual traffic load adds up to on a daily basis any day of the week. |

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by db on Dec 18th, 2006 at 6:25am
I looked and sent an e-mail. Is anyone else having a huge problem. It doesn't look that way to me - for anyone who requested the POD at least. While he did not get the image - everyone else did as far as I skimmed.
If you have a problem speak up here. Normally where there's one there's more. |

It's been getting worse and worse again. I called tech support again earlier today and they could reproduce the latency so their checking into it. I could list my three favorite classic lies but...
A favor please: Whenever you have to wait longer than 20 seconds before a page even begins to load I'd like everyone to post here. (And yes I know that will take some time when it is sloooooow like this.) Say what ever you want but just saying arrrgh will do. I just want something easy to point to point to in the future. |

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by db on Jan 8th, 2007 at 8:12pm
We anticipate a hold time of at least fife to ten minutes... Now that's unusual!
Hopefully this affecting other servers and they can fix it. BTW - My last three posts were pre written this was as fast as I could post them with the phone at my shoulder. |

8812478.3?? Interesting. The previous .2 eventually resulted in a server move after some very harsh words were traded. Turned out great for a month or so after a few false starts.
I never even knew there was a .3 before today .... hmmmm >:( |

Title: Re: sloooooooooooooooooooow Post by db on Feb 1st, 2007 at 7:09pm
No it's this server. I've called every day this week. They know it. Here's the basic replies:
"Upon further review, we have found two abusive users... Your site is loading normally now that the offending processes have been stopped. "I have monitored this server today, and found another account that was utilizing most of the available processes. This issue has since been corrected." They want me to move to a different (cheaper) plan. That plan won't work for QJ. Unfortunately, hosting is paid through August. I've already called my credit card company for a charge back. That got someone's attention so the site was fine for a while and I paid it once they threatened to shut it down. They can fix it. They choose not to and I'm sorry but I'm a stubborn SOB. I want what I paid for plus moving this site is a three day job and I just did that like 4 months ago. Since then I added a lot of server specific things to make sure QJ wasn't the site hogging all the resources. What they won't say is if the reason is sites are knowingly abusing resources or if there's some known security hole that allows processes to be commandeered by outside sources. It makes a huge difference to me. Putting too many sites on a server is one thing. Not being to control access is another. PITFA |
