Title: Dangerous River (R.M.Patterson) Post by Yellowbird on Jan 9th, 2007 at 4:44am
The author takes you on his 1928 account of a trip up the South Nahanni River in the NW Terrritory. Today the lower S.Nahanni is a wilderness preserve. Back then it was a legendary river of no return. The first year, he canoes up the Spring swollen river to scout and returns before Fall. The second year he partners with a fur trapper and builds a cabin. When his partner doesn't return from Fort Simpson on a late Fall run for supplies, he finds he must embark on his own in the dead of winter or face starvation.

I received this book as a Christmas gift this year, and I had it finished by the 28th. This is a fantastic book! I think the solo trippers amongst us would find this book especially interesting, as this guy embarks on an epic solo trip. I think this story offers a good balance of historical info, detail on how he traveled, and detail on the equipment that he used. I can't see any wilderness tripper not enjoying this read. A great account of an amazing voyage back when the Nahanni was wild, remote and generally feared for it's legend.
I'd rate this one: 5.0/5.0 Ranger |

I got this book when I was in high school -- in the early 1950s (don't anybody giggle!). I've read it half a dozen times. Great read.
