Title: Algoma - Sand and Agawa
Post by Mk631 on Jan 31st, 2007 at 9:30pm
Anyone paddled in the Algoma District (north of Sault Ste. Marie)?  Specifically, I'm looking at the Sand and Agawa Rivers.  The Sand has good documentation on myccr.  Agawa I've only found thru an outfitter - which is OK with me since it's class 2/3 whitewater & I'd need some work on those skills before such a trip anyway.

Just wondering if anyone here has any personal experience with these.

Thanks.

I have been curious about this area, too.  Has anyone here tried the option offered by the Algoma Central Railway?     (You need to Login or Register
It seems like quite a unique method for launch of the trip.

Both Sand (from Sand Lake) and Agawa (from Agawa Canyon) are accessed by train - I suppose you could fly in to Sand Lake & paddle out, but train is what people seem to do.  I like the idea too.  I've taken the Agawa Canyon train (to see the canyon), which is what got me interested in the whole Algoma area in the first place.

This is a great way to explore the canyon.

A friend and I did this a couple of years ago. We spent 5 days 4 nights in the canyon. We also had access to two canoes while in the canyon but we spent more time hiking and exploring up and down the tracks. There are two rangers in the park 24/7 and they would tell us the times the trains would be passing each day so we could be clear of the tracks when they came through. They also told the engineers which direction we headed each day so they could watch out for us. There are trails running from the tracks back to remote lakes but just walking the tracks was incredible. Most days we tried to avoid the one tourist train that stopped in the park daily. But if we chose to stay we could eat in the dining car on the train. The tourist train is in the canyon for 1 1/2 hours each day...the rest of the time the park was ours!!

Check out Kevin Callan's "Ontario Canoe Routes" books.  There is a good description of the Sand (possibly the Agawa)in one of the books of this series.
