This is a great way to explore the canyon.

A friend and I did this a couple of years ago. We spent 5 days 4 nights in the canyon. We also had access to two canoes while in the canyon but we spent more time hiking and exploring up and down the tracks. There are two rangers in the park 24/7 and they would tell us the times the trains would be passing each day so we could be clear of the tracks when they came through. They also told the engineers which direction we headed each day so they could watch out for us. There are trails running from the tracks back to remote lakes but just walking the tracks was incredible. Most days we tried to avoid the one tourist train that stopped in the park daily. But if we chose to stay we could eat in the dining car on the train. The tourist train is in the canyon for 1 1/2 hours each day...the rest of the time the park was ours!!
