Title: Quick and easy breakfast Post by Iron on May 28th, 2007 at 5:10am
What are your ideas for a quick and easy, no mess breakfast. Trying to keep the production down and escape for morning fishing without having a bunch of dishes or prep time. Something to pack ahead of time would be nice. I've done breakfast bars, oatmeal (tough to beat). Any other sugestions?
My son is vegetarian, so if you have suggestions for that, even better. Iron |

Two other suggestiion, make some rice pudding the night before makes for a great breakfast, or cold cereal prepackage with some powdered milk in a baggie, I would recommend Milkman brand powdered milk taste like 1% to me.

Just take your favorite dry cereal and eat it out of the bag, like GORP, along with your morning drink. You can add dried fruits and nuts, or anything else if you wish, to make a custom breakfast GORP. And you can take this out fishing without wasting the time and preparation of an in-camp breakfast.

Trail mix with coffee and go, then have shore lunch with the fish you caught!

Jiffy Biscuit mix. Takes 10 minutes over a stove and if you put a little oil in a small dutch oven the dishes do themselves. Jiffy makes a heavy biscuit, but they are full of calories.

A pound of jerky in the boat and wash it down with hot coffee or tea. Coffee is a bit of a process to make in the woods. I like to throw a tea bag in a bottle of water and take off and now they have coffee bags. Just heat up the water so it doesn't melt the plastic and when its heating up put in your sugar and creamer and coffee bag in the bottle. Pour and go. Swizzle

I don't cook on solo trips unless you consider boiling water and pouring it into a cup cooking. There are a number of bars on the market that are quite good and supply a meal full of what you need, so why bother? It's supposed to be a vacation, so why work? A week of eating that stuff makes the restaraunt meal when I come out tatse that much better

Cooking is not work, but brings satisfaction for some of us.

I agree with OS, cooking is fun and rewarding, but so is fishing and getting an early start. We mix breakfasts up, some no cook, and cook, and do them as needed, per what we feel is needed for the next day. Works out pretty well. First camp morning on trip, however, got to have the scrambled eggs or french toast and bacon, (mostly pre cooked) no matter what. Tradition is tradition!

That's what we do. We take about 3 cooked breakfasts, with the rest being no cook, except we always brew coffee. We count oatmeal as a no-cook, because all we do is boil water, which can also be used for hot choc.

Travel days, coffee, 2 coffee bags in small thermos type cup.
And a oatmeal breakfast bar supplemented by snacking on trail mix while I paddle. Camp days are more traditional, pancakes/biscuits or one of those excellent Cache lk fry pan breakfast breads ;D Fish if I catch some and potato pancakes to go with ;) |

Another idea we use early in the trip is cooking eggs in a zip lock bag. In a ziplock bag we drop in two beaten eggs , we also add cheese and some pre cooking bacon. Then drop the zip lock bag into a pot of boiling water and wait. We take the bags out when the eggs look nearly done and mash the outside with a fork. (Just to make sure the egg is throughly cooked) Once the egg is cooked it slides out nicely and you have a fresh omlette for breakfast.

cooking is enjoyable, and that's why I leave it for when I have the time. I like to be on the water within an hour of sunrise, it is the best time to paddle because it's usually calm with mist on the water. Wind picks up around the time most people finally get on the water after preparing and cleaning up. If I cook it is usually lunch when the wind is high. I often paddle to sunset, which is also the best time to paddle. After the sun has set is another time I cook. It's called BWcanoeAW, not BWcookingAW.

This thread is getting ...overdone...on one side the get up and go crowd...on the other...i love to cook (or feel good about cooking/sharing).
The idea is to share quick breakfast ideas....of which we've received many....so we can keep this going about quick b-fast.....or take it outside re. cook Vs. chug. Peace, Beav |

this thread is pretty much done, anything beyond boiling water is not quick, and some would argue that isn't quick, so unless somebody has found a bar that others haven't tried, or something premade at home, the only thing left to do is to squabble about the merits of spending two hours preparing and cleaning up after breakfeast or getting on the water right away. I am assuming the Beaver justs knaws on tree bark :P

I do like to eat something at breakfast. If you want to get-up-and-go, I'm OK with a couple of granola bars and water. Those breakfast cereal bars are good, too, the kind with "milk" (like Honey Nut Cheerio Bars). Maybe some Tang instead of plain water.
If you do want to boil water I like Grape Nuts Plus and Folgers dunk bag coffee. Grape Nuts Plus prepares like instant oatmeal: At Home 1/2 cup Grape Nuts 1 Tablespoon plus 1 teaspoon of powdered milk 1 heaping Tablespoon of dried fruit bits (Sunkist or Del Monte) 1/2 teaspoon sugar Mix together in a lightweight plastic bag. Tie shut. In Camp: Empty into bowl or cup. Add 1/2 cup of boiling water. Stir. Serves one. |

BTW - The Grape Nuts Plus works well with the Freezer bag Cooking technique. In that case at home you would put the Grape Nuts mixture into a quart-size freezer bag. In camp, put the freezer bag into your foam "bowl". This bowl is more like a beer can cozy - ie a foam cylinder. Add the boiling water. Seal. Cover for a minute. Open the top and eat. Lick off your spoon, put the bag in your garbage bag, and go.
