I ran accross this on a backpacking site. It is geared nmore towards backpacking but she has some new twist on using different types of food.

Has anyone tried the Nile Spice brand of dried soups? For canoe tripping I think they are great. Chicken Vegetable, Black Bean, Lentil, Potato Leek, Split Pea, Minestrone, Red Beans and Rice and a bunch more. They come in a paper cup with a peel off lid for rehydrating. Since the paper cups are 95% wasted space I transfer the contents to a tiny Ziplok bag bags which can be dumped into another device for rehydration. Or you can nest the empty cups together to save a lot of space.

If you go online there is a supermarket in New York City (Gristedes) that will mail order them out promptly at a reasonable cost.
