Post by flpaddler on Oct 1st, 2007 at 10:17am

flp,

I guess I saw your note too late, not that it would do me any good since it's a work day for me.  If anyone DID see the program, however, I'd be interested in learning whether this is the trip that BWJ owner/editor Stu Osthoff served as guide in late June of '07?

If so, those of you with whom I travelled with in '06 should be REALLY familiar with the lakes, terrain, etc..

Too bad we fished the place out before they got there, eh?

Just curious....

Jimbo--yes this is the trip the owner of the BWJ guided up into Darky, Brent, Argo, Suzannette area. I don't get the Outdoor channel so I'll have to catch at someone else house ;)--I'd be curiosu if it was good.

Saw some footage of Stu leaning on his paddle, and talking up the fishing. The only fish I saw were a few stunted chubs. ;)

OS,

Stu must be using his BWJ barbless hooks, again, eh? ;)  Too bad about the secret fishing hole information I gave him.  Somehow I must have gotten it all wrong in the telling.  Geez....   :'(

TimA,

They didn't happen to show footage of any "short cut" portage that one of his most loyal readers/writers steered him to, did they?  THAT footage I would surely want to see!  8-)

That would also explain the chubs.  Stu only THOUGHT he was fishing Suzanette, etc....   :o

I got this note from my daughter who is trying to get me a copy of the show:

Hi Dad –

I just looked up that program.  It’s ‘LimbSaver’s Outdoor America’.  The program description is:

“Team Wolf Creek journeys to Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario for a trophy fishing trip”.

I have to check to see if I even get the outdoor channel.  It looks like it’s part of one of the premium packages, so I’m not sure whether I even get it.

That specific show about Quetico is supposed to air again on 10/4 at 3:00 and 10/6 at 18:00, so if I get the outdoor channel, I should be able to tape it for you.

Maybe this helps any of you still wanting to see it.
I love chub fishing especially when its part of the GRAND SLAM!

Chubs, a snappin' turtle, a snagged beaver, and a small perch....

I would love to see this show, but unfortunately I can't get the outdoor channel.  Here is some info found on the other forum for those who might wish to catch it:

It is supposed to be shown "again on Oct 4 at 3 am, and one final time on Oct 6 at 6pm."- TL

It was also mentioned that you might be able to purchase a copy of the show from the Outdoor Channels website for $10 or so, but I can't seem to find anywhere on their site to purchase shows.  ::)

Perhaps a fellow inukshuk could record it for the rest of us without Outdoor Channel coverage.  ;)

Here is the website to purchase show DVD's. It is not available yet--so you will not see it. It will probably take a week or two before you can purchase the show.

I tried to DVR it, but failed.  Just switched from Cable to Dish and the DVR is a bit different, apparenlty.  I think I have this Thursday's set up to DVR.  I will let you know what it is like.

Tim A, since we live so close, maybe you will have to come over for a viewing and a couple beers?

QJ'ers will find Stu's account of this trip in the current issue of the BWJ.  Just received my copy yesterday.

Expect to find the usual suspects at the usual "honey hole", catching the usual fish.

QP, I sure wish WE could have found that Conmee honey hole! Not that it would have done us any good, however, according to Stu.  He says that your tried & true GULP doesn't catch'em.  He laments the changing Q rules banning natural bait.

This might be a job for your "Secret Bait", QP!

P.S.  It would appear that Stu did not take advantage of the portage "short cut" I had suggested to him.

Stu is the master of misdirection. They never went to Conmee, it only has Q carp. Come to think of it, where did they catch those chubs?? ::)

Maybe we need to put an investigative team together and track the BWJ boys on their annual late June Walleye trip to Comnee.  It certainly couldn't be that tough.  We could find their honey hole :).

I am kidding of course.  To be honest, I would rather keep searching for my own honey hole.

I have another question and this is coming from a numbers guy - me.  Who on here counts the fish they catch?  People always ask me how many I caught?  I can give them an estimate, but I don't count x over24", y over 28".  It wouldn't be that hard to count the big ones, as I don't catch that many big ones, but I wouldn't know if I caught 17 or 23?  It seems like they must have a tally going when they fish?

Sorry to inject this into this thread, but I skimmed my new BWJ article about this trip.  They did catch some serious walleyes.

Mav,

I got to agree with the underlying sentiment you've expressed.

Seemed a bit like a meat factory tally to me.

QP & I DID search Conmee for their Honey Hole (based upon clues in previous BWJ issues) but w/o luck.  We were largely unsuccessful, however, because QP was using GULP & I was using lures larger than most of the fish we caught.  QP caught every bass in the lake... despite informing me as we portaged in that there WERE NO bass in Conmee.  Unfortunately, he was fishing for walleyes.

I, myself, was fishing for Pollyhumpers.  We didn't catch any of them, neither.  I suspect Stu would have made quite a fuss about it had he caught one of those (OR, one had caught HIM).  So, don't expect to see THAT kind of action on his video, either.

Did Vince Lombardi fish? I'd always keep score when I went with a particular friend 'cause it seemed to me he was mathematically challenged and that would always tick me off. First fish...biggest fish...   (You need to Login or Register my most memorable fish of all time. Funny, it now looks even bigger than I remember.

I watched the program.  It was more of Stu talking than it was actual fishing.  It interviewed 3-4 of the guys on the trips and they told why they went to the BW/Q.  Stu talked about Sweat Equity a few times.  It did show some pics of the larger fish caught.  I liked it obviously, as it was about Quetico and the Boundary Waters, but it was more of an interview than I thought it would be.

I don't recall that it named any lake names, just talked about Quetico in general.

Saw it today too Maverick

I too thought it was more of a vignette on what the Q was all about...not much fishing.  That was a nice Pike and Walleye!  I wondered how much "earlier" they had been caught, before filming was able to take place?

Mid June....fishing looks good.

Thanks to Maverick I finally saw the program  :). I was a little disappointed--maybe it didn't help I watched the Hawkeyes get beat right after  >:(.
So here is my unsolicited review ;) Anyway, as others have stated it was mostly Stu leaning  on his paddle talking a lot with some interviews thrown in by the other paddlers. Very little action, a few fish pics--a walleye Stu said was 29", but looked more like 25" (maybe TV made it look smaller). Although the show was a 1/2 hour it seemed with advertisements and other stuff it was more like 15 minutes of footage.
So overall it was okay, interesting to me because I have been on all of those lakes, but I guess I would have liked to see more scenery, camp life, and some fishing video.

1/2 hour show....15 minutes of Q content, (the other 15 min was a different segement), now take out the comercials....and I get about 9-10 minutes.

Seemed to mainly be a plug for his mag as he mentioned it a couple of times.

Fun to see the Q though.
