Title: Blackpowder and bagpipe Bw rondy anyone? Post by Riversend on Oct 5th, 2007 at 2:24pm
just toying with the thought. I'm not much of a social butterfly but thought this might be an interesting combo. Traditional type stuff in a very authentic setting. Perhaps some longbow competion, goat squeezing, blackpowder offhand marksmanship, passing of the jug, stumpys talltales, beard shaving with flint knives and so forth and so on. And for the men ,we also could also include some sort of competions. Just a preliminary thought..any intrest ?

Buswhacker balladeering, voyageur rapping, determining how long it takes bagpipe music to bring a moose to its knees, finding out how many dozen QJer tents we can fit under Wenonah Rider's tarp... man, I'm starting to get really excited about this event!

Gee... You guys up north get to do all kinds of fun things... All we get to do at family reunions here are, wrasling, greased pig chasen, Spot-light and 22 shooting at night... along with some serious banjo playing... kinda like in that movie ;)

Party on dudes........let's just stay on the right side of the thin line so that we don't walk the same portage as the now well known partyers from Ely did that fateful night in August
........tough for me staying on the right side of that thin line with my lightning struck, left-handed mush for brains telling me what to do. Count on my tarp and I being there, just let me know when and where Maybe we can add a new element of partying to Mad town during Copia next year. We'll teach the UW students a few new things about partying |

All right then , there may be some intrest. As for the men shaving with flint knives, the ritual is forbidden by the traditions of my klan. Only pagen shes from lesser regions near the BWCAW follow the flint knife beard shaving ceremony. The male gender of the klan which rules the region now called the BCWA are proud of their physique and would never endander their prowness by going the way of the knife. One caress from the edge of a knapped knife could leave even the manliest to wear a wicked gash for life and that wouldn't be to manly. Men of the BCWA preen and pluck unwanted hair folicales by applying spruce gum to clam shells and use the clams much like modern tweasers.

While browsing for venison sausage recipes, I stumbled upon this beverage mix. I only sip in moderation, but this may be my choice for the rondy...everyonelse bring their own!
Chatam Artillery Punch: 1 lb. green tea 1 gal. gin 2 gal water 5 lbs. dark sugar 3 gal. Catawba wine 2 qts.maraschino cherries 1 gal dark rum 3 dz. oranges, sliced and seeded 1 gal. brandy 3 dz. lemmons, sliced and seded 1 gal. rye whisky 10 qts. champagne Steep the green tea in 2 gal. of cold BWCAW water overnight. The next day strain tea through 3 laywers of fresh beaver pelt into 2 (5 gal gas cans). Mix strained tea and all the other ingredents except the champagne. Allow this mixture to mellow for at least 2 weeks in a cool dark place. To serve, pour the punch over ice and add 1 qt. of champagne for every gallon of punch. Makes 12 gallons. wadda ya think... :-? |

Well, I am ashamed to admit I am, That I did a very unmanly thing the other day :(....When reaching into a sink of soapy water, a razor sharp knife jumped up and took a deep bite from the digital pad of my index finger :-/ rendering an ugly gash :o. you most likely can tell that I'm typeing with a limp. this knife attack caused me to wimper (briefly) and grimace (mildly). I spoke as a pirate might :-[ Harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
But.. enough of that..... Checking out the medicine cabinete and fridge, I found all ingredients are on hand, I'll try a batch. If and When I recover, I'll let ya know. :P |

Riversend,
Which came first... finding the ingredients & mixing a batch or the vicious knife attack??? Seems to me you might have gotten the chronology mixed up..... Jimbo 8-) |

THAT'S why manly men don't do dishes ;) Thru the millennium its been the DUTY of the lesser she's in the clan to do such chores :-? Either that or the young pups who are sired by manly men ;D As you can see I have NO lesser she looking over my shoulder or I would be unable to type this for fear of a DEEP cut to my MANLY nether region ;) If one MUST do lesser she work, then remember what the elders said many moon's ago ::)" Sharp knifes, soapy dishwater will make manly HE into lesser SHE " :'( Must go now, hear rumble of ANGRY she's in distance :o |

wasn't sure if this pertains to early ice trippin, autum blues , wildlife sightings , current trip reports or what, but decided to put it here under foolishness ::)to prep for this trip, I swiged a couple gallons of punch.. and away we go,
This weekend, I made one of those early ice outings. I took photos and made notes . Short trip report is as follows : In preperation for the rondy, I thought I'd go out to the park and scout around. I've read this eary ice trip must be done in an aluminum canoe...being a doubter, I said " nope, I'll whip up a stout birch bark canoe .. I will go . So a couple hours later, i finished my canoe and was ready to grab some paddles and go. But, I remember.. paddles won't do.....gotta use pitch forks.....so I grab a pitcher of forks and I,m ready to go. Soon I'm way out into the middle of Q, when all of a sudden I spot a cougar that takes down a muose right there along the shore line not to far away . I 'm not surprised as I've heard of other recent photo documentarys of this. Moving along I spot what I thought was a great horned howl attacking a beaver as it put away the winters chow.Well, I made it home and the gene pool wasn't dimished at all. Soon as I get the photos I'll post them. |

Well. the photos are back but they are fuzzy and not at all what I expected. Still, belive they are what I say they are. A little photo shop work will sharpen them up,,, if nothing else a little more punch in your glass will put things into perspective. Remember, these are actual un retouched photos, you Will belive they are what I say!
Photo 1 : my homemade birch bark canoe. Ain't she a beaut :question at the stern, you can see my stout paddle I propelled the canoe with my_birch_bark_canoe.jpg ( 69 KB | 0

The pitch forks worked fairly well, but I kept getting surface feeding fish in the tines. I think they were flying fish, but I don't fish much so I,m not sure. I do know that after a short ways I had several hundred of these fish in the bottom of my birch bark canoe, I was concerned the wardens might think I was spearing fish so I quigkly wove a gill net from the fine roots of cedar trees knowing that as soon as the wardens saw the net they would relize I was actually netting white fish thru the ice as that is open season (phew..quick thinking huh?)

I've seen all sorts of critters in the woods in all shapes sizes and variations, so an ol' woodsman like me wasn't surprised to see a she lion . Yep, it had been a few weeks sience I'd last seen one but I heard they were making a comeback to the way deep piny wood. Sure enough, as I forked my way down the lake slinging flying fish into the ol' birch canoe, I spotted this one taking down a record size muose. This ornary she cat would tose its prey into the air and catch it again much as a cat with a mouse or a dog with a bone...which the photo shows it isn't. I've shown this photo to the noted wildlifer Dr. I.M. Leary and he confirmed this specimin was of the orange collared varity and is ediable in various stir fry menues. Dr. I. M. Leary further noted that in the deep south a variation know as the collared greens are a good eat :) (Dr. I.M. Leary is brother to Dr. Timothy further )

It was a quiet day and the shores echoed with that familiar twittering melody "Who saws for you?" "Who saws for you?"Knowing I was in for a rare glimps of the great horned howl, I was twittering in anticipation.I knew I must steady my nerves so I would hold the camera steady. Chug, chug, chug, I drained the jug. What I was able to capture on film has never been seen before, and I know many will remain skeptical .Dr. I.M. Leary can only describe the critter as a crossbreed between beaver and bird, pointing out that the beaver tail and chisel teeth are clearly beaver, yet the tale tale bird song and horned howl characteristics show a mixture of both..how could this happen.....guess I don't have a flying clue :question

solotriper me think I said "pagan shes " from lesser regions..not lesser shes....mighty BIG differance there.
mmm, ahhumm, humm ah humma, harty harrr harrr: well now let's see where we are? Continueing along in quest for wine and song, I thought why not take the birds along :question Not the "pinks with little winks " but something "strong with eye sight long" Not pirates parrot nor chickodee,We need a noble bird for history :exclamation with an eye to the sky and the jug close to breast, I set out to fill the quest.I wasn't out long when there came a screaching'song..... high in a pine the answer was mine :) eagle_ayes.JPG ( 78 KB | 0
