We have in the past used anchor bag form BWJ with 30-40 feet of rope attached. Works great an alternative is a basket ball goal net with the ends tied. Just add rocks when you need an anchor. Easy to portage.

I currently use the basketball net anchor bag system and it works great.
Cheap and durable.

You hard-core light travelers (I'm not one of those...I'll pack beer sometimes) are NOT going to like this idea. I use an old window sash weight. It has a eye hole to tie or carabiner a rope to, it is skinny and can slide into a pack very nicely, and the weight (2-4#) is just right for holding a canoe. My partner hates this idea, but I'm the one carrying it. I don't bring lots of clothes anymore, I found I just didn't wear them. The reason I don't use a mesh anchor with rocks is sometimes they get stuck between rocks, and it takes some pulling to get it out. The thin anchor I use is great for mud, rocks and weeds.

Sooo, you'd be the naked guy with the sash weight anchor ;D
Many old school walleye fisherman on the Detroit River use the sash weight to drift along with the anchor just barely hitting bottom.
Are you sure your partners displeasure wasn't caused by you "accidentally" slipping the anchor into "his" pack ;)

Equal weight of log chain works great for a canoe anchor. But I'll use the old mesh bag and local rocks for tripping.

I could be that guy, but I'm rarely naked in the BWCA. I usually go in mid-May (I'm headed out in four days!) and it's a bit cool for that activity.

Hey, could you carry in some firewood for me? Glad that works the way you want, I have enough gadget weight packed that I have to use the rock/bball net way, otherwise the pack would sink the boat.

I prefer to bring two 20 lb mushroom achors from the bass boat. One at each end really secures a canoe. ;)

I bring my BFH and a hand bit and find a appropriate rock...the girlfriend carries the BFH and the hand bit, she holds the bit too. I also use a small section of old garden hose as a sleeve through the hole in the rock so the rope doesn't wear out. Need the rope....facilitates the hose's second purpose.

I've started using one of these too. I store it jammed into the end cap of the canoe so it's always handy when I want it. Also find that my 25' painter is often enough anchor rope. If not I add the 25' from the other end.
