Last year we were traveling though the Rolland chain and come upon a burned out area arould the camp on Middle Rolland. This was late May. There were more Morals than I have ever seen in one place. I bet that there were thousands. They were all within the burned area. What a treat. Has anyone had this experence on other areas?

So you are saying it was a Moral Majority in that location?  Sorry, just couldn't resist!

I have never seen a morel at all in the wild but then I've never looked either.  I prefer to leave them for someone who might enjoy them.

I'm from NW Arkansas and around here the are know as Land Fish. They come about the same time as the spring run on the area rivers.

Is that as opposed to the immoral mushroom? Morels are fun to find...

Morel's are great.  It's been difficult to hunt for them this year due to the variable weather conditions here in central Iowa.

I love the things minus the occasional piece of sand that doesn't get washed out.

I found some on  a portage on the Man Chain years ago.  

We call them honeycombs here.  They bring a high $ selling them.  Three or four years ago I was getting up close to $60 a gallon for them.
For us we tend to find them on a hill sides facing southeast near big elm trees.  We take them string a thread thru them, hang upside down in a dark closet and have them to eat all year long, providing we can keep from eating them that long.

The first thing to come up after a forest fire.  We had them so thick one year you could pick up a gallon in 15 minutes.

Just something magical about surooming in the woods, a good stoggie, and a sunny warm 80 degrees outside.

Got a couple of bags filled today... what a wonderful spring treat. Lilacs here signal both the crappie spawn and the morel season. Tough to choose between them so I try to find time for both. Was on Mack the spring following the big burn, and yes, the morels were THICK. I've wondered if that continues for several springs after a burn, or if it's more of a one-time thing... ?

I was wandering on the forest preserve behind the campus and decided to trek off the beaten path and kept my eyes to the ground.  After no more than 10 minutes I stumbled upon my first gem of the season, after about 45 minutes my khakis were full!!!! ;D  I went strait home and grabbed a bag and went out and ended up with another half a grocery bag before the sun went down.  This is the first time I have stumbled upon such a large take and this was only a 40 acer area. I had found a few of these delectable treats when I was hiking before but WOW!  I had one hell of a great dinner of simple fry (flour and butter) a few hours ago and I am definitely going back out tomorrow,  I would definitely advise anyone in southern Wisconsin to keep your eyes peeled.

Twice this spring to the same spot, not 50 yards in diameter, not 50 yards from the end of the main trail. A sack full of the captivatingly scented 'honeycombs" 90% over 6 inches long and lungs full of fresh air.

I'm from St Louis, and hunt morels every spring.  We get them about mid to late  April.  About what dates do you find them in the northern part of the country?  I don't get up there until mid June. :)

I found them in mid May.

In Wisconsin we usually find the "dryland fish" in April...during Turkey season.

I always find them when the Lilac bushes first start to bloom.

I don't even LIKE morel mushrooms (yes, I know it is terrible to make that statement when you live in mushroom country!) but I can't tell you how it lifted my spirits to read the words "when the lilac bushes first start to bloom."

Ah, spring!  The best time of year!  Just thinking about it. . . . .

We see lots of "false morels" or "brain mushrooms" (Gyromitra esculenta) every May in Quetico--make sure you know the difference if you are going to eat them--false morels are moderately poisonous.  You can find lots of information and photos of both in Google.

Fellow Morel Lovers,, this will be my first trip to the BWCA but being from the river bottoms of central Missouri, we know alot about Morels,, a friend of mine, Larry Lonik,, may he r.i.p.,, was a professional Morel hunter,, he died in an ATV accident hunting mushrooms,, i couldnt think of a better way to go,, but Larry told me stories of people starting in the south in April and moving north as the season moved on,  some of his biggest and best stories were from late season hunts in Michigan and Minnesota,, 12 foot Jon Boats completly full of Morels  .. Here in the midwest we find what they call "Big Blonde Morels" ,, in the north they find what we call "Black Morels or Peckerheads",, just as good ,, just as good to eat,,  just a little different looking,,,.. and Larry always told me that these northern Morels always loved burned out areas,,,..  he even told me that there were hunters who would  just look for burned out old forests to find Morels,, I dont know what it is but I would guess that in the burned areas of BWCA ther are millions of Morels,,,,
We are coming in June , probably a great time to find Morels,, I will be looking,,
A Blackened Walleye Fillet, smothered in fresh Morels might be too much for my group to handle !!
