I have 3 friends I guided with who all had giardiasis, but all of them swore they treated water.  Best guess is that it most likely came from some unsanitary practices of not washing hands, dirty dishes, etc. or ingesting some lakewater.

Regardless, watching the 3 of them run to the restroom a dozen times in an hour has made me not want to take chances with the giardia bug.  I'll filter or polar pure my water.
