For Chritsmas I got Les Stroud, Survive. Some is a repetion of Stroud's TV show, but there's a lot more depth here. I thought it a good read. And lots of useful information. [smiley=dankk2.gif]

I didn't realize that he wrote a book - I will keep an eye out for it.

I heard that he has stopped doing the show. I can imagine it would wear on a person greatly over time. Too bad though, because my wife and I always enjoyed it.

Did not know I could get the show on my computer. Have not seen each episode a dozen times, but some of them.

And I did not know he was not doing more. That's a bummer. Though it explains why it's never there when I scope the Discovery channel.

As I understand it, QJ will actually be holding "tryouts" to see whom WE might send to replace SurvivorMan on TV.   Right at dusk (skeeter-humming time) three days in advance of Jamboree, contestants will be airlifted to the park boundary nearest to Stumpy's Chub Pond.   Then, they will be forced to jump down 20 feet into the nearest lake from a copter - buck naked - and swim/walk/climb/crawl their way to our destination.  Foraging skills as well as a thick hide are at a premium.  If you want clothes, you've got to go catch yourself some.  The same goes for food.  Water should pose no problem.  Contestants who actually arrive at Jamboree on time qualify for lifetime Inukshuk status on QJ.  Stumpy will personally carry out on own his back the very first contestant to arrive (he has a makeshift seat fastened to his 200 pound backpack).  Intrepid Camper promises to  paint a modern-day pictograph of our winner on the nearest suitable rock face.  Other awards planned.  Details to follow.  Since Stumpy is the judge & therefore not allowed to compete, we really only have two contestants so far... those two BWJ characters who tried to bushwhack their way into McKenzie Lake last summer.

That SurvivorMan bushwhacking stuff can really get into your blood....

Interestingly enough, the Survivorman episode that comes on ten minutes from now on the Science network is about: "Survival in Northern Ontario".  Our would-be QJ bushwhacker/survivorman contestants would do well to watch!

True, but you didn't go about it anywhere near the same way that MagicPaddler & Kingfisher did (see the most recent BWJ issue with THEIR story)... NOT that any sane person would go that way!

[By the way, I'm uniquely entitled to say it was a CRAZY notion because it was MY idea in the first place.  However, I retained enough wits about me to avoid actually trying to execute on that simple-minded idea.]

Tim, we started on a trip to McKenzie via customary routing a couple years back.  I had a copy of your BWJ story in my hand (again) when we started off.  We ran into some misfortunes, however, & never made it.  Seems to me I had a copy of another of your stories in my possession when I set off for Stumpy's first Bushwhacker's Jamboree, too.  It was the one you wrote about the bass on McDougall Lake... one of the main reasons I ended up going THERE versus to Stumpy's Chub Pond.

Anyway, "bushwhacking" in ONE DAY from the east into McKenzie Park ain't for the faint of heart.

Well, literally, you are correct. But the portage from the Wawiag to Belaire is about as close to a bushwhack that is technically not a bushwhack as I have ever been on. And we paddled upstream -- not the best route I ever selected.

My buddy on that trip sent a message to the effect "can you believe they did that?" Not too far from some of the bushwhacks we've done though.

My favorite was the creek out of Yum Yum. Not this year, but on my agenda for a repeat.

Ooooh, I forgot THAT was the way you went in... yes, indeed, reports indicate that route is pretty rugged!  I think it was Mad_Mat, Stumpy, & a few others who told me of their exploits on that "alleged" portage.

I guess I'd have to put my "shortcut" into Cache Lake in the category of these escapades, too.  Rather than complete the 2.5 miler from the north down to Cache Lake, my brother & I jumped on the stream at the 1 mile marker, hoping to "float" the rest of the way to Cache.   WRONG!!!!  Not the best idea I ever came up with.   In short, me & the swamp became much better acquainted than I ever desired.  It became a "teachable moment" for me (ie.  "DON'T MESS WITH MOTHER NATURE, YOU IDIOT!  TAKE THE PORTAGE PATH NEXT TIME FOOL!").

I forgot to mention that you can also stream videos directly to your TV set ... mine runs through my WII box via a wireless internet connection.

XBox now has a Netflix chanel too.

Also, similar to Stroud is a UK guy, Ray Mears - Bushcraft.
