Go for it Geo.  You can't make it worse I assure you.  If it were me, I wouldn't mess with patches though - some epoxy would appear to be sufficient for even deep scratches.  Old epoxy can be removed with some patience.  Post a picture of what you're up against and I bet we can help you out with a team effort.
