Title: Beaverhouse to Cirrus Portage Post by paddlerpj on Jun 23rd, 2009 at 8:50pm
Just a little over a week before we head into the Quetico from Beaverhouse into Cirrus! Does anybody have experience with the portage(s)? I understand there's a portage into an unnamed lake, a short paddle and then the portage into Cirrus. Some of the reading I've done suggests the locations marked on the maps for the portages may not be accurate. Any input?
Thanks. PJ |

Coming from BH most maps are marked correctly. It's coming from Cirrus where there is a poor location going into no-name which I guess would be the exit side coming into the park. Fisher Maps pre 2002 are the main culprit here though.

Pretty straightforward stuff. The bay that the portage starts from on Beaverhouse has some old log remains sticking up out of the water. Can't miss those. This one also has good open landing areas on both ends. Easy up and down carry into the no name.
Once on the small no-name it's a short paddle to the other portage, follow the northern shore around. I recall there are two small rocky spots on this shorter carry, so watch your footing. Have a great trip! Ranger |

I remember the log remnants and that it was easy to do and easy to find.

Are you picking up your camp permit at the ranger station on Beaverhouse?

I did the portage from BH to the unnamed lake in May of 2008. The portage is farther west on the north shore than was indicated on our map. You won't miss the portage but hug the north shore of the unnamed lake sooner rather than later. The portage from BH to the unnaned lake is easy to find. The old bridge for the railroad marks the portage. The portage from BH to the unnamed lake has a fair amount of elevation to it.

Thanks to all for the good responses. We're excited about the trip. We're picking up the permit via an outfitter so we can avoid paddling out to the ranger station on BH.
Thanks again for the input and we'll post a trip report when we return. Regards, PJ |
