Title: Trail Into Little Gabro Lake - How difficult ? Post by IlNPIKE on Jul 11th, 2009 at 12:39am
Hi,
I am doing a trip into Little Gabro Lake in September. I read on the site that it is a difficult portage from the parking lot to the lake (200 rods). 1.) Can someone advie me on how difficult this portage is ? 2.) I want to use a transport kit (wheels) under the canoe so I do not have to carry it. Is this possible on this trail ? 3.) Does anyone know how far the campsite is once you reach the lake ? Is it reached by more walking, or by canoe ? 4.) Any other suggestions is appreciated. Thanks. |

The portage is, in general, down hill from the parking lot to the lake. It is 200 rods long (slightly less than 2/3s of a mile). There are two up hill stints, but not steep. At the end, it is a little muddy.
The portage lies with the wilderness boundaries, and is not a motor use area ... wheels are prohibited. The better of the campsites on Litle Gabbro is on the far side of the lake. It is a short paddle. There are, however, several nice spots within two miles on Gabbro Lake. No portages are necessary going into Gabbro unless the water is high (spring) and the narrows are running harder than you think is safe to paddle. Wear your life jacket, and have a great trip. |
