monjon and I did this trip awhile back. 6 days is LOADS of time, especially if you tow all the way across LLC. We paddled LLC from Beatty portage to Fall lake. The trip from Iron is a 2.5-3 day paddle at avg paces. Let that guide you.
Advice? Walleye fishing great on Iron, Crooked, and Basswood. Don't miss Rebeccah falls on Iron. You'll obviously pass by Curtain and Lower Basswood falls. Plan grabbing a site early on Crooked or Basswood river. The route is easy, scenic and portages are not difficult. There is some danger of fast water if you are unseasoned as you approach Rebeccah, Curtain, and some of Basswood river. Nothing to be scared of....just keep your eyes open. Pictographs on Basswood river before reaching the lower falls...west side, on high cliffs over the river. My opinion only....2 nights on Iron..see both sets of falls...evening and AM fishing the eyes in Curtain tailrace downstream of the portage. 3 nights on Crooked fishing the border islands between Fri and Tr bays...for the eyes. 1 night at Lower basswood and fishing. Last night at Hanson's Isle or 3 sisters just outside of outlet bay...again 'eye fishing. That leaves a 4-5 hr paddle to Fall lake last day. Sounds like a blast....and you're about due for some warmer weather up there. Bring the leeches and crawllers. The boat ride from Crane is a hoot. You owe a trip report with pics upon return. |
