Chum and silvers also smoke well (if I can just figure out which end to light)...

I'd recommend starting at the tail  :P

I just finished my geology degree last week, and for the past few months, I've been sending resume after resume to potential employers in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau, etc.. So far I've had no responses, and really it's a shot in the dark, but your post here has strengthened my lifelong desire to move North.

On a side note, I made some cajun maple glazed salmon the other day, and it was fantastic. Mix some hot sauce and misc. blackening spices in a bowl of maple syrup, coat the fish, and cook 2-3 minutes per side in a skillet over medium heat. Add a bit of lemon juice for extra zest, and serve over wild rice. It ends up with a mostly sweet but spicy outer layer, protecting the juicy salmon flesh underneath. Absolutely incredible.

If you want to do it on the cheap, pancake syrup works just as well as real maple, imho.
